Re: DENVER BRONCOS NEWS

I dedicate this first post in the newly christianed sub-forum to the good Mr. Tibs...... Grin

Just a note guys, feel free to post threads and talk about whatever you like in the NFL Teams thread, this is just a place to contain some news blurbs about our hated AFC West Rivals....

Romanowski eager to meet with Broncos' new coach

Quote
DENVER -- Bill Romanowski envisions a protein bar stocked with vitamins and supplements in the corner of the locker room, customized workouts to fit each player's deficiencies and on-staff nutritionists waiting to be of service.

That's what the former Pro Bowl linebacker would implement if he were in charge of a team's health and well-being. And it's one of the game plans he's going to present when he gets the chance to meet with newly hired Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels.

Romanowski said he's been contacted by Broncos owner Pat Bowlen to come in for a meet-and-greet early next week with the 32-year-old coach who replaced Mike Shanahan.

He said no position has been promised. It's just a simple sit-down.

A team spokesman told The Associated Press on Thursday night the Broncos had no knowledge of a meeting scheduled with Romanowski.

Just like in his playing days, Romanowski figures he has a lot to offer the Broncos.

"I'm going to profess my vision on how to better take care of the athletes," Romanowski said Thursday in an interview from the Bay Area.

Romanowski wants to be a coach someday. He even tried to persuade Bowlen to let him interview for the head coaching job after Shanahan was fired, creating an elaborate 30-page PowerPoint presentation. But he's never coached in the NFL and wasn't considered.

If a coaching spot isn't available on McDaniels' staff, Romanowski wouldn't mind being the Broncos' "performance" coordinator, overlooking the team's fitness and health. He's currently the president and CEO of a nutrition company called Nutrition53.com.

"There's another level on where to take a team when it comes to the way it trains," said Romanowski, who suited up for San Francisco, Philadelphia, Denver and Oakland during a standout 16-year career in the NFL that was marked by a bad temper and his admitted use of THG, the designer steroid at the center of the BALCO scandal.

Romanowski said he would also hire a full-time nutritionist and bring in some of the world's elite strength and conditioning coaches.

As for the protein bar, it would be like a mini Jamba Juice, complete with ingredients to boost strength, endurance and the immune system.

He would also design workouts tailored to an athlete's specific needs. That way, an offensive lineman isn't doing the same workout as, say, a defensive back.

"What they do on the football field is totally different. Their strength programs and speed programs will be very different," Romanowski said. "Say you have eight defensive backs. They're all going to be very similar in the way they're trained, but one day a week may be very detailed to what each specific player's needs are. Maybe one needs more leg strength? Maybe one needs more of a burst? Maybe one has trouble changing directions to his right? So you break it down that specifically."

Given his close friendship with Bowlen, Romanowski's preference is to land a role with the Broncos.

However, he's hoping to break into the league with a team in some capacity, whether as a nutrition consultant or coach.

"I have a vision. To not give back is almost doing a disservice," he said. "It's almost like I feel like I owe this to the NFL, for being so good to me for so many years."

Romanowski also has a tight relationship with Al Davis, frequently chatting with the Oakland owner about nutrition and all things Raiders.

Should Davis show an interest in his services, Romanowski would zip off another PowerPoint presentation, one that's specifically designed for the Raiders.

"He's still sharp as a tack," Romanowski said. "You've got to be on your game. He's testing you when he's talking to you."

Right now, Romanowski is focused on the Broncos and meeting McDaniels.

"I'm going to go in and see how it goes," Romanowski said. "I know I can make a big impact with the Broncos."

Re: DENVER BRONCOS NEWS

BRONCOS NEW COACH WANTS TOUGHNESS

As still cameras flashed, TV cameras rolled and reporters scribbled, McDaniels struck a militaristic -like pose. He is young, and with his cleanshaven and buzz-cut appearance, he looks even younger. McDaniels stood firm and poised, though, and carried himself with a commanding presence.

"I want this team to be tough, smart and prepared to play well under pressure," McDaniels said in his opening remarks. "The evaluation process of how to get this team to that point is going to start today."

Team to switch Defensive scheme

The Broncos are about to transform their defense, gradually at first, but fully in time, from a four defensive linemen-three linebacker set to a 3-4.

The Broncos had played a 4-3 defense throughout the 14-year Shana han era, although the team experimented this past season, in midseason, with the 3-4. The disastrous 41-7 drubbing at the hands of McDaniels' Patriots in October ended that idea, at least until Bowlen decided back upon the if-you- can't-beat-'em, join-'em method.
"We want to have a consistent scheme," McDaniels said of his defense. "As somebody who has played against this team for quite a few years here, the scheme and system have changed quite a bit. We want to bring some consistency to that and make sure we try to improve whatever the scheme is."

According to NFL scouts, the 3-4 could benefit the likes of Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder, the Broncos' first-round and second-round picks in the 2007 draft. Although disappointments through their first two seasons, Moss has potential to convert from a defensive end to a stand-up, outside linebacker in the 3-4 and Crowder has the type of skills to play the type of defensive end required.

Many more Broncos players, however, are not considered suited for the 3-4, such as defensive linemen Ebenezer Ekuban, Dewayne Robertson and John Engelberger.

Broncos' McDaniels to retain Turner

Running backs coach Bobby Turner, who always has been considered a key voice in the Broncos' offensive planning since joining the team in 1995 on Mike Shanahan's original staff, will be retained by Shanahan's successor, Josh McDaniels.

Turner formally joins defensive coordinator Mike Nolan on McDaniels' staff.

Kansas City special-teams coach Mike Priefer is expected to become the Broncos' new special-teams coach. And veteran coach Dom Capers is expected to join the staff in the coming days.

Re: DENVER BRONCOS NEWS

Broncos McDaniels To Rehire Coach Dennison

Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels has decided to retain Rick Dennison on the coaching staff.

Dennison was most recently the offensive coordinator of the Broncos but now he'll most likely be the offensive line coach. He interviewed for the head coaching job earlier this month.

Dennison was on the staff for all 14 seasons of Mike Shanahan's tenure. Under his guidance the offensive line posted three of the best four seasons in franchise history in terms of sacks allowed. In the 2008 season the team gave up just 12 sacks, which was the best ever for the team.

McDaniels also decided that Jedd Fisch will not be rehired. Fisch was the receivers coach during the 2008 season.

Re: DENVER BRONCOS NEWS

Martindale to Broncos

Quote
Don Martindale, who considered himself a head coaching candidate a couple of days ago, has made a lateral move and accepted a position on the defensive staff of the Denver Broncos, beat writer Steve Corkran is reporting.

Martindale has coached the Raiders linebackers since 2004, arriving with Rob Ryan.

It’s a minor surprise in that Martindale, if he didn’t stay with the Raiders, was expected to surface with either Rob Ryan in Cleveland or Rex Ryan with the New York Jets.

Instead, Martindale stays within the division on the staff of Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan.

Denver Broncos assistant coach Jeremy Bates was named Southern California's assistant head coach of the offense and quarterbacks coach on Monday.

Bates, 32, was Denver's quarterbacks coach for the last two seasons and worked primarily with the offensive line when he joined the Broncos in 2006.

Re: DENVER BRONCOS NEWS

SALARY CAP RANKING

3. Denver -- $34m under – New coach Josh McDaniels has needs everywhere, primarily on defense. This unit could see a massive slash-fest that frees up another $15m or so, giving them near $50m to spend! S Marlon McCree, S Marquand Manuel, LB Nate Webster, LB Boss Bailey, DE Ebenezer Ekuban, & DT Dewayne Robertson are just 6 of maybe 10-12 defense cap-cuts. McDaniels won’t leave offense off his wish list since he’s holding a platinum credit card. Free-agent RB Derrick Ward is a perfect fit. They have 2 great WRs in Brandon Marshall & Eddie Royal, but what about adding WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh? McDaniels witnessed T.J. burning New England for 26 catches, 340 yards and 1 TD in the last 3 meetings.

Broncos hire Phifer as assistant coach-linebackers

(AP) — The Denver Broncos on Monday hired former NFL standout linebacker Roman Phifer to assist linebackers coach Don Martindale.
This is the first coaching job for Phifer, a 15-year NFL veteran and three-time Super Bowl champion. He played for the Rams, Jets, Patriots and Giants.
The Broncos also announced they are retaining Keith Burns as assistant special teams coach, completing new coach Josh McDaniels' staff. Burns is a 13-year NFL veteran who spent 11 seasons in Denver and has spent the last two seasons working with the Broncos' special teams.

Broncos name Xanders general manager

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have promoted Brian Xanders (ZAN-ders) as their general manager.
Xanders joined the Broncos as assistant general manager May 5 after several seasons in the Atlanta Falcons organization. He served as assistant general manager in Denver along with Jeff Goodman, whose father, Jim, was the Broncos' vice president of football operations.
Both of the Goodmans were fired Thursday when Xanders was promoted.
Owner Pat Bowlen says he's confident Xanders and new coach Josh McDaniels will lead the Broncos back to the playoffs. They've missed out the last three years.

Broncos release two from front office.

Jim Goodman and Jeff Goodman have been dismissed from the organisation.

Jim Goodman had been vice president of football operations and Jeff Goodman had been assistant general manager, sharing that post with Xanders.

"This appointment comes with unfortunate circumstances as I have enjoyed working with Jim and Jeff over the last year," Xanders said.

"Nevertheless, I am humbled by this opportunity and accept it as a great challenge on behalf of our fans, our community, Mr. Bowlen and the organisation. I am excited to work together with coach McDaniels and put our collective resources into winning football games."
