Broncos Mailbag.
Hey Mike! Now that Coach McDaniels has basically gotten rid of anything resembling the Mike Shanahan era (Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Tony Scheffler, and Peyton Hillis), what kind of timetable does McD have with Pat Bowlen to produce a playoff team? Rudy, I get this question from time to time. And each time I get it, I think: What is it about sports that incites people into wondering when coaches or executives will get fired? In regard to McDaniels, the answer lies in Pat Bowlen's gut.
Who knew, for instance, that it was a 31-10 home defeat to the lowly Oakland Raiders in Game 12 of the 2008 season that got Bowlen, the Broncos' owner, into thinking about possibly parting ways with Shanahan? It wasn't until the final three-week collapse at the end of 2008 that Bowlen believed his instincts were confirmed.
I'll give you my gut on this, providing you understand I'm a little more ticklish than Bowlen.
Providing there are no extenuating circumstances, McDaniels -- who is entering the second season of a four-year contract -- should have this season and 2011 to reach the playoffs. One playoff appearance in either of those two years and he coaches out his contract, maybe even gets an extension prior to 2012.
If he doesn't make the playoffs in either of the next two years, then I doubt the future potential of Tim Tebow can save McDaniels. This is hardly a profound statement. This is the NFL. You'd be hard-pressed to find any head coach who lasts into his fourth season without a playoff appearance, or a 10-win season, among his first three.
There is one potential premise that could put McDaniels on the hot seat for this season. If the Broncos finish 7-9 or worse this year, and Shanahan's Redskins and Cutler's Bears finish 10-6 and make the playoffs, McDaniels could be in trouble.
I still believe Bowlen would stick with McDaniels given this example. But to do so, Bowlen would have to withstand serious pressure from Broncos fans who would scream for a change.
I don't see this nightmarish sequence happening, by the way. I don't think Shanahan can lift the 4-12 team he inherited to any more than seven or eight wins this year.
As for the Broncos, they are the ultimate wait-and-see team. There are reasons to believe they will be better than last year -- starting with their new and improved defensive front. And there are reasons why 8-8 is a fair prediction -- most notably concerns regarding Ryan Clady and the offensive line.
