Re: DENVER BRONCOS NEWS

Broncos deny interest in McNabb
Quote
Sal Paolantonio said Sunday that three teams have spoken to the Eagles about Donovan McNabb: Buffalo, Cleveland, and Denver.

The Broncos are the only team in the group with an established starting quarterback, so it's no surprise they told the Denver Post there is "no truth" to the report.

Perhaps the Broncos are just covering their tracks.  Why not deny it?

But this is an odd fit.  Josh McDaniels' offense is much different than Andy Reid's and we can't imagine the Broncos giving up the compensation required to get McNabb.

If the Eagles are going to trade McNabb or Kevin Kolb -- and we doubt they will -- the suitor will have to be desperate enough to give up major compensation.  Kyle Orton was promising enough that the Broncos should not be that desperate.

Ryan Clady tore patellar tendon playing basketball
Quote
The unbridled enthusiasm coming from Denver in the wake of the Thomas-Tebow round-one haul has hit a relatively major snag.

As Mike Klis of the Denver Post reported earlier today, tackle Ryan Clady suffered a potentially serious knee injury while doing something unrelated to football.  Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the injury is believed to be a torn patellar tendon.  The source says the injury occurred while Clady was playing basketball.

If that's the case, Clady likely will miss all of the 2010 season.  A first-round pick in 2008, Clady has started all 32 regular-season games of his career, and he was named to the Pro Bowl and the Associated Press All-Pro team after the 2009 season.

Also, if anyone is interested in signing Flozell Adams, it may be a good idea to get a deal done before the Broncos make a play for him.

Thats "IF" ALL goes well. That is a serious injury, esp for a lineman.

Elvis Dumervil signs his tender
Quote
The list of restricted free agents who are signing their tender offers today rather than risk having those offers reduced tomorrow continues to grow, as Denver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil signed his tender today.

The one-year tender gives Dumervil a $3.168 million salary for 2010. For restricted free agents who don't sign their tenders today, teams are entitled to reduce those tenders to 110 percent of their 2009 salaries tomorrow. In the case of Dumervil, his offer would have been reduced by about $2.5 million.

Dumervil would like to get a long-term contract extension, but he and the team haven't made much progress.

So far Dumervil has been a bargain for the Broncos: In four NFL seasons he has 43 sacks and has made only $2 million.

Tebow continues to struggle with mechanics
Quote
We recently pointed out Peter King's article in the latest issue of Sports Illustrated, which features a close look at the ongoing effort to make Tim Tebow into an NFL quarterback.

Among other things, King's article shows that Tebow has been slipping into his old throwing motion during some practice reps.

As Mike Klis of the Denver Post points out, this fact conflicts with coach Josh McDaniels' insistence that Tebow has shown no problems with his mechanics.

We get the impression that, while the Broncos will continue to try to ensure that Tebow demonstrates proper mechanics at the NFL level, the team is willing to accept the fact that, from time to time, he'll rely on the muscle memory resulting from thousands and thousands of throws made with his prior motion.

But that doesn't mean the Broncos won't try to change him -- or that they'll pretend that the effort to do so already has been completed.

Re: DENVER BRONCOS NEWS

Bailey's agent takes the gloves off

Quote
Earlier this month, Denver Broncos left cornerback Champ Bailey discussed the fact that he is entering the final year of a seven-year, $63 million deal with the team.

Even though there haven’t been any extension talks, Bailey vowed to play out his contract without complaining. He said he wants to remain in Denver, but he understands that a new deal may take time, especially because of the uncertainty of the CBA. Bailey, who just turned 32, also realizes that Denver has to address the contract status of linebacker Elvis Dumervil first.

While Bailey took the high road, his agent has made it clear that a new deal is desired sooner than later. That’s what agents are for. Bailey will do his job, stay quiet and play. His agent, Jack Reale, will do his job.

This is what Reale had to say about the situation in an interview with the Denver Post:

"Are we disappointed the Broncos have not approached us about a contract extension? Obviously, we are," Reale said. "A player of Champ's caliber deserves to have the option of an extended contract. This is a guy who essentially was a six-time Pro Bowler [if not for an injury in 2008] in his six years there. Anyone with any kind of football knowledge knows his skills have not diminished, as evidenced by the fact he didn't allow one touchdown in 80 passes thrown his way last year, played in 98 percent of the snaps and remains one of the best-tackling cornerbacks in the game.

"We hope the Broncos come to us sooner rather than later about a contract extension before the die is cast in another direction.”

Denver shouldn’t get too excited about Reale’s comments. He’s just sticking up for his client and he is reminding the team that it has to take care of its superstar. Still, Dumervil is more pressing, so the Bailey talks could easily extend past the season. Ultimately, though, I expect Denver to try to keep Bailey, especially if he has another solid season in 2010.

Former Denver receiver Brandon Marshall clearly thinks Denver should pay Bailey. He told the NFL Network he thinks Bailey is the best cornerback in the business.

enver - Kyle Orton outplayed Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow to the point that coach Josh McDaniels declared the competition over two weeks ago. Orton will enter the season as the starter and will have more job security than expected as a fantasy QB2. … Knowshon Moreno could be in line for a breakout season, improving his pass protection and showing greater explosion in OTAs. He's a RB2 with upside. … Eddie Royal is finally concentrating on slot duties, but it's Jabar Gaffney that will take Brandon Marshall's spot as the Broncos' No. 1 receiver. Keep him in mind as a late-round steal. Rookie Demaryius Thomas (foot) will be fully healthy for training camp. Expect him to be used in more of a situational deep threat role to start the season.

Training camp battles: AFC West

Denver Broncos

Alphonso Smith vs. Nate Jones, nickel corner

The Broncos traded a 2010 first-round pick to take Smith in the second round of the 2009 draft. Even though he is small by corner standards, they thought he could become a starter down the road while playing nickel as a rookie. But Smith flopped as a nickel corner. Reports are that he's had a good offseason, which the Broncos need. Denver signed Jones as a free agent from Miami, providing solid competition. Jones played the nickel corner role for the Dolphins, but is little more than that and likely won't be a starter down the road. That's OK with this team. Champ Bailey and Andre Goodman form a nice starting duo, but you need three good corners now in the NFL. Smith has to step up his game to earn this job or Jones or rookie Perrish Cox just might keep him on the bench.
Edge: Jones. Smith has a lot to learn and Jones knows what it takes.

Opening day starter: Jones. They paid him for a reason -- he will play.

John Elway thinks Tim Tebow "has plenty of arm"

Quote
Broncos Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway thinks far too much is being made about the question of whether rookie Tim Tebow is an NFL-ready passer.

"The thing about Tebow is they're focusing too much on his release," Elway told the Denver Post. "As long as he can get it in a timely manner, I think he has plenty of arm there. . . . He's not going to change his release. He may get better. Obviously, by throwing you get more accurate and more accurate and you may shorten it up as time goes on but if it's long and quick, that's OK."

Overall, Elway sounds like he's sold on Tebow and on the direction the Broncos are heading in. But he cautioned that people shouldn't expect too much from the team because "they are so young."

"Maybe they make eight, nine, 10 wins would be a good year I would think," Elway said. "But show a little more consistency and finish the season out."

Re: DENVER BRONCOS NEWS

Broncos Mailbag.

Hey Mike! Now that Coach McDaniels has basically gotten rid of anything resembling the Mike Shanahan era (Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Tony Scheffler, and Peyton Hillis), what kind of timetable does McD have with Pat Bowlen to produce a playoff team?

Rudy, I get this question from time to time. And each time I get it, I think: What is it about sports that incites people into wondering when coaches or executives will get fired? In regard to McDaniels, the answer lies in Pat Bowlen's gut.

Who knew, for instance, that it was a 31-10 home defeat to the lowly Oakland Raiders in Game 12 of the 2008 season that got Bowlen, the Broncos' owner, into thinking about possibly parting ways with Shanahan? It wasn't until the final three-week collapse at the end of 2008 that Bowlen believed his instincts were confirmed.

I'll give you my gut on this, providing you understand I'm a little more ticklish than Bowlen.

Providing there are no extenuating circumstances, McDaniels -- who is entering the second season of a four-year contract -- should have this season and 2011 to reach the playoffs. One playoff appearance in either of those two years and he coaches out his contract, maybe even gets an extension prior to 2012.

If he doesn't make the playoffs in either of the next two years, then I doubt the future potential of Tim Tebow can save McDaniels. This is hardly a profound statement. This is the NFL. You'd be hard-pressed to find any head coach who lasts into his fourth season without a playoff appearance, or a 10-win season, among his first three.

There is one potential premise that could put McDaniels on the hot seat for this season. If the Broncos finish 7-9 or worse this year, and Shanahan's Redskins and Cutler's Bears finish 10-6 and make the playoffs, McDaniels could be in trouble.
I still believe Bowlen would stick with McDaniels given this example. But to do so, Bowlen would have to withstand serious pressure from Broncos fans who would scream for a change.

I don't see this nightmarish sequence happening, by the way. I don't think Shanahan can lift the 4-12 team he inherited to any more than seven or eight wins this year.

As for the Broncos, they are the ultimate wait-and-see team. There are reasons to believe they will be better than last year -- starting with their new and improved defensive front. And there are reasons why 8-8 is a fair prediction -- most notably concerns regarding Ryan Clady and the offensive line.

Re: DENVER BRONCOS NEWS

Broncos agreed to terms with OLB Elvis Dumervil on a contract extension. Per ESPN's John Clayton, the five-year extension brings the total package to six years and $61.5 million with $43.156 million guaranteed

The deal is nearly identical to the one signed by Terrell Suggs last season. Locking up Dumervil is an important signing for the franchise. Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall were rewarded for their petulance with lucrative new deals in other cities while Dumervil spoke softly and carried a big stick on the field. One of the few Mike Shanahan leftovers still thriving under Josh McDaniels, the 2009 NFL sack leader is the cornerstone around which the Broncos will build their defense.
