Re: AUTO RACING Thread

Second duel just wrapped up.  Kasey Kahne nipped Tony Stewart at the line.

Observations:

1)  The Penske cars are loaded.  Kurt Busch finished 3rd and led the most laps by a wide margin, Hornish ran up front until late trouble and Brad Keselowski ran well, coming all the way back through the field after a pit road gaffe;

2)  JP Montoya will be a factor Sunday.  He showed he could blow past people with no help on a couple of occasions;

3)  Mike Bliss and Scott Speed raced their way in, also bringing Michael Waltrip into the field.  Congrats to all.

Final starting grid for Sunday should be posted in a few minutes.

OOPS.  I think I misunderstood what I saw in terms of the NASCAR game we play.  If I'm getting it right, the groups need to change.  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

ETA:  Per 37, it's the qualifying results that determine the groups, which is what I did.  Is there something I don't know about this?  We're running out of time, friends.  Little help?  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Re: AUTO RACING Thread

The 500 doesn't use straight speed to determine qualifiying order.  It goes like this:

1/2 - Fastest two from qualifying
3/30 - Based on finish in the Duels.  Winners are in at 3/4, 2nd Place finishers 5/6, etc.
31/43 - Reverts back to combination of Top 35 owner points, speed and Past Champs Provisionals

Official grid will be on NASCAR.com.  I'll go get it and post it in a minute.

Kahne to Hendrick?

ESPN's Marty Smith (who is usually quite reliable) is reporting that Kasey Kahne has signed a multi-year deal with Hendrick Motorsports starting in 2011.  It is speculated he could end up in the #5 car or go to Stewart-Haas as a third team, given that HMS and Stewart-Haas have a technical partnership.

Unknown if Budweiser's sponsorship will go with him, but given his marketability it's hard to think they won't.

UPDATE:  NASCAR.COM now reports Kahne is not renewing his contract with Richard Petty Motorsports per a team press release.  Link: http://www.nascar.com/2010/news/headlines/cup/04/13/kkahne.rpetty.split.2011/index.html

NASCAR changing the look of front splitter for 2011
New valance design will eliminate need for braces
By Mark Aumann, NASCAR.COM
June 12, 2010
04:56 PM EDT

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- The Sprint Cup car is about to lose its braces. Beginning with the 2011 season, NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said a new front valance and splitter combination should eliminate the need for the braces that hold the splitter in place under the current design.

"It will be less utilitarian-looking," Pemberton said. "It'll have a little more style in it, and I think people will like that. As we work forward, that's not the last change. We're looking on some stuff that actually has to coincide with the manufacturers and their introduction of new cars to sell."

Pemberton said the current design, introduced in 2007, is due for an upgrade. And with the implementation of the new Nationwide Series chassis this season, NASCAR's research and development team went to work on trying to add some pizzazz -- and manufacturer identity -- to the Cup cars.

"There's always a cycle that you go through and you look for changes," Pemberton said. "We've been pretty occupied in the last two years in getting the new Nationwide car up and running. So everybody's been working on that, knowing that right on the heels of that, we'd be looking at upgrades and upfits to the Sprint Cup Series car."

Replacing the unpopular rear wing with the spoiler was the first step, according to Pemberton.

"We did the spoiler this year, and next year, we'll do the front valance and spliter area, which is from mid-bumper down," Pemberton said. "It's a styling change. It'll give the manufacturers an opportunity to work on getting some sutble changes to the identity there. It's just time for an upfit there."

So what will the new front bumper look like? According to Pemberton, it'll incorporate a lot of the Nationwide design.

"It'll look more similar to that than the way it does today," Pemberton said. "[It incorporates] the things that we've learned in the last two or three years of how to keep things a level playing field for the competitors and the things we've learned in the wind tunnel about trying to keep the balance of the car, front to rear."

That could mean more changes to make the current generic chassis a little more manufacturer-specific, Pemberton said, perhaps as early as 2012 or '13.

"It depends on what people call a full redesign," Pemberton said. "There are things that you are limited to, but we are looking at some changes. Once again, it has to go hand-in-hand with manufacturers' needs. But I will say this: The things that we have learned over the last 24 months, with working on the Nationwide car, will really allow us to put some more detail and manufacturer identity in it."

HOF Nominees for 2011 Announced

Link:  http://www.nascar.com/2010/news/features/07/01/2011.nominees/index.html

Personally, my five picks are as follows:

Darrell Waltrip -- 84 Wins, 3 Championships (81, 82 and 85) and one hell of a good broadcaster
Cale Yarborough -- 83 wins, 3 consecutive cups (76-78)
David Pearson - 105 wins, say no more
Ned Jarrett - 65 Champion, and on the Mount Rushmore of broadcasters
Dale Inman - 8-time champ as Crew Chief (R. Petty X7, T. Labonte in 1984)

Floor is open if anyone cares to debate...though the list has a lot of worthy candidates.

Roush suffers minor injuries in crash
By Terry Blount

NASCAR team owner Jack Roush suffered minor cuts on his head in a plane crash Tuesday evening at Whitman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wis.

Roush was flying his private jet, a Beechcraft Premier 1A from Detroit. The jet made hard contact on landing and cracked the fuselage.

Brenda Strickland, a friend of Roush's, also was on board the plane. NASCAR journalist Bob Margolis, who is writing a book about Roush's life, was told that Roush and Strickland were not seriously hurt.

"Jack got out and had blood some blood on his face," Margolis said. "Apparently he bumped his head. They both were taken to a local hospital for observation, but I've been told they are OK."

Roush, an aviation buff, was expected to attend the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual AirVenture in Oshkosh, this week.

Roush, an experienced pilot, suffered serious injuries in a plane crash near Talladega, Ala., in 2002. He was flying his P-51 aircraft when it crashed into a lake. Roush was unconscious and would have drowned, but he was pulled from the water by Larry Hicks, a retired marine who lived nearby and saw the crash.

Roush was in Oshkosh for EAA AirVenture, an annual air show.

Glad to hear Jack is doing alright.

Report: Kentucky to host July race
Quote
Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Kentucky Speedway will get a NASCAR Sprint Cup race in 2011, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

The 1.5-mile tri-oval halfway between Louisville and Cincinnati will host NASCAR's top series in early July. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision had not been announced. A news conference is scheduled at the track Aug. 10.

Speedway Motorsports Inc. purchased the speedway from the original ownership group in 2008. SMI owner Bruton Smith said his main goal was to bring the track a long-coveted Cup date.

The original owners filed an antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR and International Speedway Corp. in 2005, contending they tried to exclude the track from the Cup Series.

Smith called the court case a major stumbling block and was relieved when it eventually ended this year. Smith had no immediate comment, but said before last week's race at Indianapolis that he'd like to have a Cup race at "all" of SMI's NASCAR sanctioned tracks.

The company also owns New Hampshire Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway and Infineon Raceway.

The only one that lacks a Cup date right now is Kentucky, though Smith said he's optimistic there would be plenty of time to get the facility ready for a Cup race.

Kentucky already hosts NASCAR Nationwide and Truck Series events, as well as an IndyCar race. Plans are already in place to expand seating from 65,000 to around 100,000.

NASCAR officials had no immediate comment, but CEO Brian France said before last week's race in Indianapolis that the series was mulling "impactful" changes to its 2011 schedule.

"There will be some changes as they look now," France said. "That could not quite materialize, but I sense it will and we'll have some pretty impactful changes to the schedule that I think will be good for NASCAR fans."

SMI will likely have to move a race from one of its other tracks to Kentucky. Smith has consistently played coy about his intentions, but during a Cup visit to New Hampshire in June, he didn't exactly endorse the prospect of continuing to have two Cup races a year in New England.

While the second race traditionally kicks off the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship, the June race could easily be bumped off the schedule.

NASCAR is expected to announce its 2011 schedule by Labor Day.
