Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Browns signed CB John Bowie to a reserve/future contract.

A 2007 fourth-round pick by the Raiders, Bowie has intriguing speed but can't stay healthy. He's played in just five games the past three years.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Falcons waived S Erick Brock.

Brock, a former undrafted free agent from Auburn, appeared in one game last season and had one tackle. He doesn't have a future in the league at safety.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Falcons waived DE Maurice Lucas.

Lucas didn't last long after signing a futures contract in early January. He also wasn't going to beat out Chauncey Davis or Lawrence Sidbury for a spot.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

49ers signed ILB Darry Beckwith to a reserve/future contract.

Beckwith was on San Diego's practice squad last year after going undrafted out of LSU. He has special teams upside, but is backup material on defense.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

FEB 11TH

Michael C. Wright of the Florida Times Union reports the Jaguars this afternoon officially released receiver Torry Holt, offensive tackle Tra Thomas and defensive tackle Rob Meier.

"After completing our postseason roster evaluation, we've made the decision in the best interest of the organization to release three veteran players with tremendous playing history in the league,'' said Jaguars general manager Gene Smith. "All three players have played 10 or more years in the NFL and have a made a positive impact on the Jaguars' organization. These decisions certainly weren't easy ones, as Torry, Tra and Rob have (made) over 350 starts between them, and they still have the ability to contribute for other teams in the league.''

Out of respect for Holt and Thomas, the club gave them advance notice about plans to move forward without the duo in order to allow time for them to catch on with new teams. The club decided against releasing them on the first day of the league new year (Monday).

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Falcons re-signed WR Brian Finneran to a one-year contract.

The 34-year-old's season ended early with a torn left PCL after catching only 11 passes. A mainstay with the Falcons since 2000, Finneran will be no better than the fourth receiver and is not guaranteed to make the final roster.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, the Giants have released MLB Antonio Pierce.

Pierce has confirmed the news via e-mail. The move had been expected since the end of the season. Pierce, 31, was due $4.75M in 2010, and there are questions about his health due to a bulging disk in his neck that caused him to miss the final six games of the season. Jonathan Goff, Chase Blackburn and Bryan Kehl are internal options to replace Pierce, but the Giants will likely look outside the organization for a permanent solution.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Seahawks signed LS Matt Overton.

Overton was with the Seahawks back in the summer of 2007 after going undrafted out of Western Washington. He'll likely compete with Pat McDonald, signed out of the CFL Thursday, for the team's longsnapping job.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Jaguars released OT William "Tra" Thomas, as expected.

The Jags released three players with a combined 33 years of experience Thursday. Thomas, a three-time Pro Bowler and mainstay at left tackle in Philly for 11 years, had little left in the tank by the time he got to Jacksonville. He spent most of the season as a part-time player behind rookies Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton. The 35-year-old wants to keep playing in 2010.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Jaguars released DT Rob Meier.

The 10-year veteran has played his entire career in Jacksonville, mostly as a rotational lineman after being selected in the seventh round in 2000. The 32-year-old spent the 2009 season on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Rams claimed TE Derek Fine off waivers from the Bills.

Fine, 26, was Buffalo's fourth-round pick in 2008, but probably never should've been drafted that high and offers only H-back caliber skills. Still, he has soft hands and could find a role in St. Louis West Coast offense. Rams GM Billy Devaney indicated that Fine is recovered from a knee injury that ended his 2009 season.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Lions claimed LB Ashlee Palmer off waivers from the Bills.

The Lions were league's most active waiver-wire team last season, and it's carrying over to 2010 as they continue their attempts to add depth. Palmer won't see time on defense, but he was the Bills' second-leading special-teams tackler in 2009.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Rams re-signed WR Travis Brown.

Brown has bounced around since going undrafted in 2008. While he offers intriguing size (6'3/202), ran a sub-4.4 at his Pro Day, and was productive as a Lobo, there's little reason to believe he's more than practice fodder.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Browns released RB Jamal Lewis.

Lewis has hinted at retirement since suffering a severe concussion during Week 12 of the regular season, and the Browns were never going to pay his impending $1.5 million roster bonus or $2.4 million salary. Lewis, 31 in August, was a better signing for Cleveland in 2007 than expected, but fell off a cliff in 2008. He's averaged just 3.64 yards per carry on his last 412 attempts. The Browns will move forward with Jerome Harrison as their starting tailback.

Re: NFL TRANSACTION REPORT

Titans re-signed exclusive rights free agent LB Colin Allred.

Allred, 27 in April, started two late-season games last year when Keith Bulluck tore his ACL. Ideally, Allred will focus on special teams in 2010.
