Browns trade Wimbley to Raiders
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 14, 2010 5:54 PM ET
Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren is having a busy day trading away former first-round draft picks.

In addition to trading 2007 first-round pick Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos, Holmgren also traded 2006 first-round pick Kamerion Wimbley to the Oakland Raiders.

Adam Caplan of Scout.com first reported the trade.

The Browns selected Wimbley, an outside linebacker, out of Florida State with the 13th overall pick in 2006. He burst onto the scene as a rookie with 11 sacks and has started every game but two in his four years in Cleveland, but he hasn't been quite lived up to the promise he showed as a rookie.

There's no word yet on what the Raiders sent to the Browns in exchange for Wimbley.

Re: Raiders acquired wimbley from the browns today.

It looks like we traded a 3rd or 4th rounder for Wimbley.  I wonder if we are considering switching to the 3-4 defense?

i was wondering the same although we dont have the right NT to play it right now...maybe we will draft one....would like to know more the plan in terms of what he will play but seems like  a resonable move for hopefully a 4th rd pick but perhaps a 3rd

Re: Raiders acquired wimbley from the browns today.

He played as a SAM at Florida St. in the 4-3, so it isn't like he hasn't played in a 4-3 before.

But I wouldn't be surprised to see him put his hand down on passing downs, as the rush end opposite Seymore.

Please don't criticize Russell, this is only his 3rd Rookie Season

If you have to use the term "Hater", you have already lost the argument.

Doesn't Seymore move down to tackle and Shaughnssy come in at end on passing downs?

I hope it was a 4th...sheez.

Wimbley hasn't exactly been a star player...just solid.

It was a 3rd and he'll play DE as a hand on the ground End.  He's this years Edwards/Ellis only younger and has huge potential upside.  1st rd pick in '06.

Re: Raiders acquired wimbley from the browns today.

A true SAM LB for a change..granted its not a pro bowl player but he has been solid..thats more than what this team normaly gets from that spot.

Its just a 3rd round pick..probably the higher of the 2 we had i would imagine. But Wimbley will give more than that pick probably would right away anyway. Only 26 so hes still young and can produce. I like it

And i think too that it probably means no more Scott at LB. just move seymour inside and put Scott and Matt at DE's on passing downs..

scratch that, Donkey Dick rider Bill Williamson is reporting it to be the Patriot 3rd
Quote from: Bill Williamson
The Raiders made an interesting move Sunday by trading for Cleveland outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley.

Oakland sent a third-round pick for Wimbley -- the third-round pick it acquired in the Derrick Burgess trade lest year with New England. Oakland will keep its own pick in the third round.

That's why I don’t think this was a bad move for a player who has not lived up to his rookie success. Wimbley, the No. 13 overall pick in 2006, had 11 sacks as a rookie. He has had 15.5 sacks since.

He is not a bad player, but he may not be an ascending player, either. Wimbley has to show he can still improve. He will have to transition from the 3-4 that Cleveland ran to the 4-3 in Oakland. He is supposed to play outside linebacker, but he could also possibly play defensive end.

Oakland has some decent, young pass rushers. If Wimbley can regain his pass-rushing groove this will be a decent trade.

On the flip side, this draft is considered to be very deep. So, there will be good players available in the third round. Oakland may have been served well to take four players in the top 100 picks instead of a player who was given up on by Cleveland.

The Raiders gave up their 2011 first-round pick to New England for Richard Seymour last September. It needs to get more young talent. Trading top picks is not the way to get younger.

Re: Raiders acquired wimbley from the browns today.

6.5 sacks last year, thats real solid.

Did'nt Cleveland run a 4-3 in Wimbley's rookie year? When he recorded 11 sacks? If my memory serves me correctly, they switched to a 3-4 the next year. Wimbleys production dropped off. He also played a 4-3 in college.

I like it! Wish it was for a 4th. But, I still like it.
