Re: KANSAS CITY CHIEFS NEWS

ST. JOSEPH | Team president Denny Thum couldn’t count the hours he’s spent trying to settle the Chiefs into their new summer home at Missouri Western State University.

His vision finally comes to life next week when the Chiefs open their first training camp in the state since 1990. Players report to camp on Thursday, July 29. Practice officially starts on Friday, July 30.

“It has been a long process,” Thum said Wednesday as the Chiefs and university officials unveiled the new indoor practice field that was the centerpiece of the exhaustive efforts to bring camp closer to Kansas City.

“I can remember the first trip up here in November of 2002 and looking at the facilities close to the Kansas City area, trying to bring training camp back to the state of Missouri during the Dick Vermeil era.

“This ended up being a great facility, a great community to work with in St. Joe. The university has been fantastic to work with. If you told me that we could get this completed in one year . . . I had my doubts.

“Every time there was a major snowstorm or there was a storm like there was last night (Tuesday), I didn’t think it was going to get done. It took a long time to get the final pieces of the roof on. Once that was complete, they were able to go to town and get the interior done. We’re excited it is complete.”

The Chiefs committed last year to bringing their camp to Missouri Western in 2010, but only if the facilities were finished. When last year they departed from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, their summer host for the last 19 years, the Chiefs inquired about the feasibility of returning for one final year.

That wasn’t necessary, and the Chiefs are hopeful of benefiting from their camp’s new proximity to Kansas City. The Chiefs have night practices scheduled for Aug. 4 and Aug. 18. The annual family fun day is on Aug. 7.

“I would hope we would see crowds through the week in the 5,000-plus neighborhood,” Thum said. “Hopefully, for our two night practices and family fun day, we should have crowds that are substantially larger.”

The climate-controlled indoor facility is Missouri Western’s advantage. In Wisconsin, the Chiefs canceled or rescheduled practice during inclement weather because there was no indoor practice facility.

“Having a climate-controlled building, which was so important for us in making this decision to move, helps us with the weather here in the state of Missouri,” Thum said. “In the long run, this is going to be great. There are a lot of good things in River Falls, and there are a lot of great things here.”

Coach Todd Haley doesn’t intend to use the building for practice except in the event of thunderstorms. His plan is to practice outdoors even in extreme heat, a move that should benefit fans who come from Kansas City or elsewhere.

Practices in the indoor building would be closed to fans.

“We’re going to have two beautiful grass, brand-new practice fields outside,” Thum said. “I think his anticipation would be to stay outside. We’ll be able to have our fans be out there up close and personal. Maybe the only times we would come in here would be if we have an electrical storm that would force us to come inside.”

Re: KANSAS CITY CHIEFS NEWS

Camp countdown: Chiefs on track for season of significant progress

After three seasons of a deep slumber, Kansas City appears headed for an awakening in 2010.
The Chiefs aren't Super Bowl contenders yet, but the worst appears to be over for a franchise that had just 10 victories over the past three seasons. Certainly, they've run out of excuses if stuck again at the bottom of the AFC West when the '10 season concludes.

Coach Todd Haley has had a season to learn the nuances of the job and institute his policies. With the hiring of new coordinators Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel, he has veteran and trusted assistants running his offense and defense.

What's new

Offense: Even though Weis is taking over as the coordinator from Haley, don't look for much to change. The Chiefs will take their shots downfield, but they found an identity last year when Jamaal Charles emerged as the feature back. Kansas City will make plentiful use of Charles and free-agent pickup Thomas Jones in both the running and passing games. Jones lacks Charles' big-play potential but is a complete and dangerous back.

The hiring of Weis and the addition of two veteran offensive linemen (right guard Ryan Lilja and Casey Wiegmann, who will compete for the starting center spot) and two wideouts (rookie Dexter McCluster and veteran Jerheme Urban) change the picture for quarterback Matt Cassel. The Chiefs should be better around him, so he will have to improve as well. His 55-percent completion percentage needs a huge boost.

Defense:

The Chiefs began their move to the 3-4 system last year, so they have already suffered through many of the growing pains. Adding Crennel as coordinator shouldn't have much of an impact. He will tailor the game plan each week for the specific opponent more than most coordinators, so the Chiefs could have a different look from week to week.

The Chiefs could start two rookies at safety. They selected Eric Berry in the first round and will install him at free safety in hopes he can be the playmaker they've lacked. Another rookie, fifth-rounder Kendrick Lewis, could start at strong safety in place of Jarrad Page, who didn't sign his tender this offseason and requested a trade. Lewis is a physical run defender. Kansas City drafted Javier Arenas in the second round to challenge for playing time at nickel back.

Breakout player

Brandon Flowers, CB. Flowers might have had a breakout season last year had he not been troubled all season by a shoulder injury. He is a complete player with excellent coverage and ball skills. Flowers is small (5-9, 187) but is physical. He is not afraid of contact and can be a factor against the run. If Flowers makes a few more big plays, he could attract Pro Bowl consideration.

"I left some plays on the field (last year). I could have had a lot more interceptions to give the ball back to the offense, so they could score some points. You can always get better. I think I had a solid season, but I'm ready to turn it up for this season." — Flowers

Opponent's view

(An anonymous opponent breaks down the Chiefs)

"Haley had some problems as a rookie head coach last year, but hiring Weis and Crennel will help. That should stabilize things for Haley and let him concentrate on being a head coach. Their offense showed signs of life at the end of last year, and while they didn't add any superstars to the mix I like some of the things they did there. ...

"Adding Jones to their backfield gives them the ability to do a lot of different things. Urban gives them a receiver who will at least catch the ball. Lilja, if healthy, is a great addition on their line; he's tough and he's a winner. ...

"They'll have to be a lot better with the ball because I don't think they did enough to improve their defense. They were way too easy to run against last year, and I don't see how that's changed. Crennel also will have to figure out a way to get more pressure on the passer than they did last year."

Bottom line

Although the Chiefs are at least another year away from being serious playoff contenders, this should be a season where major progress is made toward that goal. While they still are counting on a large number of developing players, the Chiefs added enough veterans to suggest they no longer are in a true rebuilding phase.

Rather than using the playoffs or any specific win total as a gauge of that progress, a better test might be improvement as the season goes along. If the Chiefs are clearly a better team in December than September and look ready to challenge for the AFC West title in 2011, this should be judged as a successful year.

Re: KANSAS CITY CHIEFS NEWS

Haley says Weis will be the Chiefs' 'predominant' play-caller.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley said on Sports Radio 810's The Program this afternoon that coordinator Charlie Weis will call the majority of the team's offensive plays.
Haley called plays last year after firing coordinator Chan Gailey less than two weeks before the regular season began. Haley, a former coordinator himself, said that, although Weis will call most plays, the head coach won't be far away.

"We're going to work together," Haley said.

How Haley works with Weis -- and, to a lesser degree, defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel -- will be among the second-year head coach's tallest tests this season. Weis is older and more experienced than Haley, which can be a difficult situation for a coach trying to make his name and assert himself to a team and community that isn't yet sold on his abilities.

Haley is making the right decision in allowing Weis to lead the offense, and it appeared during offseason practice and the team's minicamp that Haley would allow Weis to shape the offense as he saw fit.

Two Chiefs draft-day fan favorites off to tough starts

After the Chiefs drafted Tennessee safety Eric Berry with their first pick in April's NFL draft, Kansas City fans let their minds wander toward the next possibilities.
Who might be next? If the team selected Berry, a popular choice among fans, who was to say the team wouldn't pick other nationally known college stars in the second round?

Re: KANSAS CITY CHIEFS NEWS

Chiefs placed TE Brad Cottam (neck surgery) on the reserve/PUP list.

Cottam, who broke his neck toward the end of last season, cleared waivers after failing his physical on Wednesday. His placement on the reserve/PUP list means that he won't play before Week 7, and we'd be shocked if the Chiefs actually activated him. Considering his injury history, Cottam's career may be over before it ever had a chance to get off the ground.

Re: KANSAS CITY CHIEFS NEWS

Chiefs agreed to terms with rookie S Eric Berry, the No. 5 overall pick, on a five-year, $60 million contract with $34 million guaranteed.

Though it would've been nice for Matt Cassel's sake had the Chiefs used the fifth pick on a pass protecting offensive lineman like Russell Okung, Berry proved too much of a play-maker for GM Scott Pioli to pass. An immediate starter in Kansas City, Berry is likely ticketed for strong safety. He's a sure tackler with terrific ball skills and projects as a top-ten IDP DB right off the bat.

God bless you Lamar, and congrats.

Re: KANSAS CITY CHIEFS NEWS

As the Chiefs were finalizing a deal that could help solidify their future, the team spent part of Friday morning remembering its past.

The Chiefs’ top draft pick, safety Eric Berry, wrote on his Twitter page that his contract had been completed and that he was on his way to training camp in St. Joseph. About an hour earlier, 65 miles south of the team’s practice fields, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt and other family members of the team’s late founder, Lamar Hunt, gathered Friday morning outside Arrowhead Stadium to dedicate Founder’s Plaza and unveil a bronze statue of Hunt.

“My father never would’ve let us go to so much trouble on his behalf,” Clark Hunt told a crowd of visitors, former Chiefs players and reporters.

Goodell sidestepped questions after the ceremony about the NFL’s grim collective-bargaining situation, an impasse between team owners and the players’ association that could lead to a work stoppage during the 2011 season. Goodell also was vague with his response after being asked about Arrowhead’s viability as a future Super Bowl location. In May, the NFL awarded the 2014 Super Bowl to the new Meadowlands Stadium outside New York; that year’s championship game will be the first in an outdoor stadium in a cold-weather city.

“Let’s see what the experience is like, see how well that moves, and we go from there,” Goodell said. “This stadium is fantastic. I had the chance to tour it this morning. I think the fans’ reactions are going to be extraordinary. I can tell you I’ve seen a lot of stadiums, and this is a special place.”

The Chiefs recently completed a $375 million renovation to Arrowhead. Team officials unveiled most of the large-scale upgrades last week; a new club level, improved bar and concession areas, and a horizon-level viewing area were among the improvements. Founder’s Plaza was completed this week with the installation of sculptor Bruce Wolfe’s 9-foot statue, which depicts Hunt with his arms crossed and shirtsleeves rolled up.

“Somewhat understated,” said Goodell, who once worked as Hunt’s assistant in the league office. “He’s observing. He was just a quiet man that took everything in and thought about it. That’s what he appears to be doing.

“One of the finest men and innovators in the history of sports. Lamar looms large among all hall of famers.”

Among the football-shaped plaza’s other features:

•Reflecting pools that represent the two divisions of the American Football League, the league Hunt was instrumental in creating in the 1960s to compete with the NFL.

•Several bronze plaques describing Hunt’s contributions to professional football.

•An engraved playbook sketch of legendary coach Hank Stram’s “65 Toss Power Trap” play, which the Chiefs used to win Super Bowl IV against the Minnesota Vikings.

•Nearly 5,400 customized bricks with inscribed messages from Chiefs fans.

Clark Hunt and Goodell visited Chiefs training camp Thursday evening. Hunt said he addressed players and reminded them that the AFC championship trophy is named for his father.

“He’s also the one who named the Super Bowl, and therefore a primary responsibility of any Chief is to bring those trophies back to Kansas City.”
