Cowboys signed No. 24 overall pick WR Dez Bryant to a five-year, $11.8 million contract, including $8.3 guaranteed.

Last year's 24th pick, Peria Jerry, received $7.55M guaranteed. So much for the concern about agent Eugene Parker's history and speculation that Bryant would be holding out for Top-10 money. The former Oklahoma State star becomes the first of the first-round picks to sign, just in time for the Cowboys to begin training camp this weekend. Bryant made a strong first impression in OTAs, and his early signing will only help to ensure that he'll be pushed into a big role as a rookie. Roy Williams is on notice this summer.

According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant was so excited to take part in his first training camp that he woke up at 5 a.m., got to the Alamadome shortly after noon and took the field 45 minutes before practice was scheduled to start.

"That was a factor,'' said Bryant, who was also the last player to leave the field so he could stay to sign autographs and interact with the fans who chanted his name. "By me getting on the field early, that was a statement, letting the coaches know I'm here to play.''

"This was one of the best days of my life,'' Bryant said. "I'm on a team I always dreamed of being on. I get to catch passes from (Tony) Romo. And see (Jason) Witten. And see Miles (Austin). I was watching these guys last year, now I'm part of the team.''

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant refuses to participate in an NFL rite of passage, which is carrying the shoulder pads of veteran players according to Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com.

Roy Williams gave his pads to Bryant after Sunday's morning practice, but Bryant declined to carry them. Williams threatened to go to "step two" when talking to reporters.

"I'm not doing it," Bryant said. "I feel like I was drafted to play football, not carry another player's pads."

"If I was a free agent, it would still be the same thing. I just feel like I'm here to play football. I'm here to try to help win a championship, not carry someone's pads. I'm saying that out of no disrespect to [anyone]."

"Everybody has to go through it," Williams said. "I had to go through it. No matter if you're a No. 1 pick or the 7,000th pick, you've still got to do something when you're a rookie.

"I carried pads. I paid for dinners. I paid for lunches. I did everything I was supposed to do, because I didn't want to be that guy."

What would "step two" be?

"We'll find out. Definitely going to find out," Williams said. "I don't know. I've seen guys take people's credit cards and go fill up their cards and wife's cards and everything. There's a lot of dirt that goes on in that locker room."

Coach Phillips on Dez 's 1st practice.......

"He looked as good as any player at any position, on the first day, as anybody I've seen in a long time," Phillips said. "He's got a lot of ability."

Cowboys WR Dez Bryant had to be helped off the field near the end of today's practice with an apparent ankle injury.  We don't have many details yet, but beat writer Josh Ellis thinks he just "rolled it."

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Jerry Jones said that Dez Bryant's injury was worse than originally though and he'll now be out four to six weeks.
