I suppose it is good that we have players good enough on our practice squad that other teams want them.
But, unless you think these players should have been on the active roster, Im not sure what else can be done.
We can do the same if we have an injury, we can pluck someone from a teams practice squad for our active roster.

It is the first game so I am going to look at the bigger picture when I grade.

What I saw yesterday was something I have not seen in a long time. Seems like decades.

When the O were out there, the D was on the sidelines cheering them on. It was not simply about trusting the guy next to you but also an entire team that played that game together in every sense of the word.

Jimmy is not about the stats, but more importantly, he is not about himself. He is about the team and about the team winning. That has spread throughout the locker room. This has become a group of players that are all about team. You might say that this all sounds like platitudes, but I do think it matters, and in fact would say, it matters A LOT.

Second, Jimmy did throw an INT in the red zone. Dumb mistake. No doubt. He did not pout, he did not blame the WR, he did not blame the play call. He pointed the finger at himself and said, my bad and then went out there the very next drive and brought the Raiders down the field and scored a TD. He was accountable and then in the very next moment made up for it. The focus never became about anything other than being accountable then moving on and doing better. There was no navel gazing and sitting on the bench thinking poor me.

Third. Last year, the Raiders lost a ton of close games and many if not most, they were ahead. But the O would go into turtle mode and go out there try not to make a mistake and usually go three and out and rely on the D to keep the lead. And we all know how that worked out. This league is famous for game changing last drives.

Offense got the ball with more than 5 minutes left in the game and decided to keep the ball till the game ended. If it meant that Jimmy G would have to run the ball...so be it. But the opposing O will not touch the ball again. Let Russell warm up on the side lines all he wants...he is not touching the game ball again.

Given how every player on the team seems to be all about the team winning, how Jimmy is all about embracing accountability, given how is leadership has transformed this team, and given how he finished the game.............

I give Jimmy G an A.

Out of respect for those of us who have lost (either living or dead) friends or family to mental illness, can the "funnier" side of Jones meltdown be toned down? It’s a really bad look for a player to be sharing private discussions with the owner. There’s something not right with this guy right now.

I am not going to bother reading all the posts in this thread and just say: he deserved a longer sentence and I hope he is not out until the 10 years is up. He wasn't just drunk, trying to safely navigate his way home (haven't most of us done that?). He was a reckless fool and killed an innocent person. F**k him.

Hard to argue against history but I guess I just don't see a bunch of "cute" moves by Ziegler yet. That is where I am at as well. I do question some stuff we have done in the last two off seasons but I think this draft was solid, we really did not reach or go off script overly. The free agent stuff was a bit more difficult to get my arms around but I get why they did what they did. Boldest thing they did was move on at QB but widely applauded overall. Year three will be what I expect will be the one that we get a clear view of the vision for the team.

But I cannot argue that we really hit it out in the draft, we got some great pieces, the Dline in particular got two great options.

My guess is they are aware that CB is an issue but the reality is it can't be fixed all at once.

When you play the Chiefs, you are going to give up 30 points. In fact, Philadelphia and that great defense gave up 38 points to the Chiefs in the last game played last year. I have read posts embracing Philadelphia and their D. And yes, they have a great D. But that great D gave up 38 points in their most important game.

You can build the D up as much as you want, but really good offenses are going to score points, a lot of points. There is no way getting around it.

If you want to beat the Chiefs you cannot do it simply with D. You must have an offense that score points....A LOT of points.

If Z believes that Tucker has home run ability and that he could become a factor in putting up points...then, the decision to pick him begins to make more sense.

I know the old axiom that defenses win championships. But really when you take a look at it, it is also explosive offenses that win championships.

That is not to say the D does not need an influx of talent. They do. And the Raiders did add some pieces and still need to add more. BUT, you also need to continue to add pieces to an offense so as to have multiple ways of putting up points. Because in today's NFL, for the most part, you are going to need a lot of points to win.....even if you have a very good defense. Perfect write up on defense now a days. The 9ers had a top defense and the stidham led raiders put 30+ on them. The best defenses really come down to key sacks and key turnovers. You’re not usually gonna hold a top offense down for 4 quarters.

The downside is that this team has a ton of needs on the defensive side of the ball. Wait, can he play corner? :grin: Also needed a qb. There were people on this board willing to give up the farm to move up into the top 5 for one. If that happened then there goes most of our picks this yr and possibly a pick or two next year. Then they probably would've still complained that we didn't address any of our needs

The Raiders have fortified the DL with both a DE and DT. They have also fortified the secondary with CB and S.

They have also picked the best TE in the draft, got a guy who fits the system perfectly as their backup QB, and got a guy who is a blazer who fortifies the return team while giving the offense a homerun threat and who knows, gives the team now, an option to trade Renfro and get more defensive help. The so-called biggest head scratcher, Tre Tucker got a A- from CBS.

Raiders got very good value with their first two picks and have not made a huge reach with any of their picks.

But will say this, any grades given on the day or days after a draft mean diddly. What really matters is how these players develop and translate to the NFL. No one knows for certain how this will play out. So, anyone spending the draft crying and moaning ....are silly. We will find out how this thing will play out over the next few years. Getting all worked up because of knee jerk reactions is so fucking old. People need to get some damn perspective in their life. It’s hardly about the draft. Seems the majority of petty sniveling comes from those still angry about dingleberry getting benched then booted, or just deep in the trenches hate for McD and Co.

Why is everyone up in arms over a mid round project qb? All qbs from here on out have the exact same expectations. Develop into a quality backup and if you progress into something more it's an added bonus. I highly doubt O'Connell will be expected to play at any point this season

Pick 100 felt like a wasted pick when ringo, to'o to', and vorhees were on the board. I though the wanted starters. They had 3 potential starters on the board. It wasnt who i’d pick (i want some LB’s) but answer me this if this kid is the best on your board by a mile & you don’t like any of the defensive prospects

Do you draft a guy you don’t like or do you get they guy you highly like?

Also you keep talking about starters being on the board, surely if they were surefire starters we would have drafted them or one of the other 31 teams would have took them already

We’ve drafted well through 3 rounds whether you like it or not that

Draft’s should looked at in isolation because need seems to always cloud peoples judgement on prospects

Overall really like our first three picks. 4th pick I don't hate the guy but feel we had so many more pressing needs with quality players there.

Hopefully we can at least fill one of those with our early 4th.

To all of you that wanted the Raiders to draft Jalen Carter. The guy showed up out of shape to his pro day after skipping the Combine. It was the most important job interview of his life and he didn't prepare for it. That's a red flag as big as they can get. And he is paying for it today.

Somebody will pick him eventually because they made a calculated risk and can afford it. The Raiders couldn't.

I agree with most of what you said. In regard to Meyers, it was a good contract for a good player (if WR was a need). Unfortunately, we have far more pressing needs and we would have been better off allocating our precious resources to the other side of the ball. I dont agree with this notion that we would have been better off allocating funds to the defence because no matter what we do on the D the chances are we’re going to be average at best so still have to put up points to win games

This D is most likely a couple of drafts away from doing anything good & thats depending on draft pick working out. To be honest thats a big if right now

I think adding to the offence was smart get an offence that can score whilst improving the D a little, gives us a chance to still win games

Well we better gope rookies can contribute on defense this year or we are going to be in big touble. Outside of Maxx, this is the worst looking defense on paper I can remember, and thats after a very long line of bad defenses. It looks awful right now. I don’t know if the D is worse than last year the like Adam Butler, Jordan Willis Duke Shelley, David Long Jr & Marcus Epps all have some talent some guys will be role players others have starting potential

Farrell should replace Billings, Spillane replaces Perryman & Shelley replaces Ya-Sin at the moment
I don’t think that there will be that much of a dip in replacing those guys talent wise

The way it is being built seems to lead more toward hitting the draft hard for playmakers on the D whilst surrounding them with good solid if unspectacular or under the radar FA to build a foundation for those rookies to succeed

We do seriously need a playmaker at every level especially LB through this draft which is possible with the talent available, not saying it’ll be good but i do see some light
