Re: Raiders vote to skip OTA's citing "COVID concerns"

What's interesting is that the players have said that they didn't like that the OTA's didn't feel "voluntary". So now some players are pressuring others to not attend, in essence making it so skipping them isn't voluntary.

Fuck this. If you're a bubble player, get your ass to the workout. It's pretty clear the movement to skip these would have been led by guys who felt their roster spot was secure. The Javin Whites of the world should go to OTA's and get a leg up. What's going to happen when UDFAs are signed? If you're a UDFA with a marginal shot at making the team, are you staying home?

Re: Karl Joseph Visiting (Update: He’s back!)

essentially cut, declined, tomato potato It's actually quite different because you would be picking up the 5th year option prior to the player's 4th season. So we declined the option, and then he played another year for the Raiders - very different from cutting him.

Joseph was a guy who had battled injuries so guaranteeing an additional year onto the contract at significantly more money would have been a bad idea even thought they still wanted him to finish out his 4 seasons.

Re: Which WRs deserve the Hall more than Edelman? Guess who is #1?

There shouldn't even be a discussion about Edelman and the HOF. He's not close. Any energy discussing potential HOF WR's has to include Branch and ignore Edelman.

Re: I understand some people do not care about the salary cap, but many draft predictions are nuts.

There were rumours the Raiders were looking to extend Carr after the season ended.
I would not be surprised if that happens before we sign the rookies.
I'd expect it to be about $16m signing bonus from his salary to extend by 2 years, thus creating $12m in cap space. I won't be shocked if Carr is extended, but I'd hate it. I just don't see him worth the kind of money he'd cost. It does seem like the extension talk died pretty quickly so I hope it's dead at least until after 2021.

Re: I understand some people do not care about the salary cap, but many draft predictions are nuts.

I thought rookies only accounted for 4.5 million in cap hits but I could be wrong. Did a brief search for the info but couldn't find it. Maybe someone could verify that It's about $3.5 million. https://overthecap.com/draft/

As Bram pointed out, it's currently only the top 51 that are counted and in season it's the full 53 so that adds another $1.5 million or so in cap charges when the full 53 need to count after final cutdown. There are also the cap charges for PS and IR players. But the immediate hurdle is just the top 51 and then the draft picks. We'll save cap space along the way because we have some low earners who will make the team ahead of some guys currently in the top 51 too though. Cap space isn't an issue for us really.

Re: Karl Joseph Visiting (Update: He’s back!)

Spotrac shows us as over the cap in total money if you include the whole roster , but only the top 51 count in the offseason. They show us with $3.6 million to spare prior to the Joseph contract. The Joseph contract will likely have an insignificant impact.

Re: Karl Joseph Visiting (Update: He’s back!)

Gruden was not involved at all with drafting KJ and refusing his option last year and then signing him a year later, for what we assume is much less, seems a lot better than the alternatives. In fact if we got him at close to minimum then letting him go seems like it was a prudent move. Yes, we saved some cash in that year and a year away from Guenther might have helped his development. :zany:

Re: Karl Joseph Visiting (Update: He’s back!)

If a player is officially signed and numbers have not yet been leaked by an agent to a national reporter, then the numbers are low. There's zero chance that Joseph is signed for $6 million. Probably close to the minimum plus some incentives.

Re: Raiders and Kolton Miller Agree to an Extension

Increasing his cap hit this year to make it seem like we're broke is a good strategy. It helps in negotiations and proposed paycuts with other players. The reality is that we would drop Miller's 2021 cap hit by over $7 million with a stroke of a pen - it will already be built into the contract as a team option.

Re: 2021 - Defensive Backs Thread

I know that my point was to someone saying that ex players are not the best resource & cant teach them much over a phone call

Like i said when 2 players of the calibre of Kobe & Lebron at the top of there game go to a legend like Olajuwon it tells me something

I hope our young players are taking the opportunity of asking questions of & maybe getting some one on one coaching from our alumni of not they need to asking question of themselves I don't think you can learn much over a phone call about football. You might still learn something about how to go about your business as a professional. I think that's what Woodson could offer - especially considering he started his career as a guy with ridiculous natural talent and an undeveloped work ethic, who became that smart hard-working player after some years in the league.

Attitude and priorities are well-learned from alumni. In most cases the techniques applied in a game are best learned from someone with real coaching experience.

Re: 2021 - Defensive Backs Thread

I'd never thought about it, but if asked, I would've just assumed that if a player of C-Wood's caliber was available guidance, that Abram would've gotten on the phone with him in a hot second.

In any profession, the opportunity to have a mentor, let alone a great mentor, is priceless.

Sallmon is an idiot if he doesn't reach out to Charles Woodson. It turns out that Abram actually did reach out to Woodson, multiple times. Abram's agent posted screenshots of Abram messaging and posting to CWood's instagram multiple times asking directly to get together for dinner and talk football and less directly talking about wanting to meet him etc. Woodson had no response. No guarantees that Woodson ever saw that because he might not manage his own instagram account, but the effort was made on Abram's part.

I have to wonder if Woodson would have done the same as a young Raider - he wasn't known for his study habits when he was with the Raiders - quite the opposite.

Anyway, I'm not certain that Woodson is Abram's best resource, but it's a positive that he's made an effort.

Re: Raiders and Kolton Miller Agree to an Extension

Good deal for both sides. By the time the new money kicks in, $18 million per for 2023-2015 is gonna look pretty cheap for a tackle IMO.

It feels good to finally extend a first round pick. It's also a good message to the team after moving on from some expensive lineman - it's not that the Raiders aren't willing to pay, they just want to pay the right guys who work hard and are expected to produce in the long term.

Re: 17th Game Added To Schedule

there is always a labor strike as a possibility. it is not unheard of. Meh..... they just signed the CBA a year ago, the NFL just had their revenues drop dramatically in 2020, without a drop in player costs. A strike is not happening. They signed it knowing what they were signing. The new TV deals were a requirement to move to 17 games, and the NFL got it done and both sides will reap the benefits.

Re: Official 2021 Free Agency Thread

He wonders why Vegas tired of Brown when 90% of those who pay close attention to the team wanted him out of town asap. He then gives a B+ to Seattle for acquiring an expensive guard who has underperformed his salary recently and was going to be released soon. In neither case does he seem to consider the large cap space that each moved freed up. It's pretty amazing really. The Gabe deal is the most glaring IMO. If Gabe had been released I don't think he'd have gotten $9 million on the open market, yet it's somehow a major positive to give up a draft pick for the right to pay him that. Brown's situation is down to whether he's in shape and on the field and there's nothing to indicate that either would have been the case with the Raiders. And I don't know that Hudson would have gotten the money he's paid on the open market either at his age - he's the third highest paid center in the league and is on the downside, not on the ascent.

Re: Raiders sign Andre James to an extension

Reportedly this does not affect the cap hit this year.

It's also possible that the guaranteed money isn't all guaranteed at signing, but potentially is a guarantee that vests after the season. Usually the contracts are less favorable to the players than first indicated, once the details actually come out. Hopefully this is one of those.

Re: Raiders sign Andre James to an extension

I don't understand this signing. We had him cheap this year, under control for a low price next year as an RFA. We signed him early, before he's proven anything as a starter, just to get one extra year of control. I like that they truly have confidence in him, because none of us have really seen him play, but this feels like an early overpay.

This is essentially the same head-scratcher move as the Seth extension - extending an ERFA and paying him more for a couple of years just to get one additional year at the end. If you're going to do this then you'd at least want to add on 1 or 2 more non-guaranteed years at the end.

Re: Mad MaXXX says he went & got help 4 out of control drinking & partying.....

Absolutely something to see here. Usually it is the media that outs a player...or he wrecks his car...beats his wife....some catalyst for a young man to be either forced into help...or seek help.

The fact that nobody knew he had a problem...and he was able to recognize where he was headed and do something about it...speaks volumes about his character. He really sounds like a guy with his head screwed on straight now. Some people can handle drinking and some cannot, and it's great to see someone who can't handle it recognize that and change his life.

There's also more to this interview. Great stuff about Marinelli, Carr, Mariota and other Raiders.

Re: Raiders Salary Cap 2021

I think the question we need to answer is when do the Raiders need to be under the cap. Obviously, they need to be under the cap after they trim to 53, but I think there is no problem if they are over it now. But I could be wrong. Chucker, we need you. We need to be under the cap every day. That started March 17, and continues to the end of the year.

Re: Raiders Sign RB Kenyan Drake

Must say that I think some sports hacks (writers) and even some here don't understand just this ^. Drake is not being brought in to be a backup, he is being brought in to contribute and yes, he brings in some speed and goal line expertise that Jacobs lacks. He will not be a backup but the Raiders will move forward with a two headed monster at the position of RB.

Anyone who actually watched the last two seasons the Raiders played knows with certainty that Jacobs was run into the ground and was less effective and at times in the most important games. I was actually hoping last offseason that Gruden would make this type of move because given Gruden's propensity for running the ball at times and given Jacobs running style - it could only sustain itself effectively for half the season. Gruden NEEDED to add another RB who was not simply a backup but someone who could take half the load and also bring some explosive speed to the position.

I did think Mayock could have found this player in the draft but they saw the type of player they wanted sitting their in free agency so went after him. Plus, I think the less needs the Raiders have going into the draft, the better chances they have at not necessarily reaching for a position and are free to pick that best player who falls to them.

I did check and found some of the stories written about this and it is simply cheap kneejerk response by writers who frankly do not know the Raiders as well as we do. The Raiders NEEDED to become a team with a two headed monster at RB...they are not the first and won't be the last to do have this sort of running attack. Good grief, it is as if the Raiders were the first team to ever to do this. Well said. And at $3 million plus incentives this year he's not that pricey. Booker is $2.5 plus incentives this year.

Re: Raiders sign C Nick Martin

Just so happens the "lawyer" handling the case was the Mcnairs neighbor, a scumbag ambulance chaser.
But Im sure you are right, it all seems like its on the up and up  If the lawyer is the McNair's neighbor that doesn't mean he likes them. Maybe he hates them, as plenty of other people seem to, and is handling the case out of spite and not out of friendship? Watson getting roasted in the media and facing investigations and potential suspensions is bad for the McNairs, not good.

Re: Mad MaXXX says he went & got help 4 out of control drinking & partying.....

young athlete with a pocket full of money makes bad decisions. nothing to see here

i'm glad that max is getting the help he needs. hopefully the raiders have a good support system and structure around him to keep him in a good space. waller seems to be doing ok so time will tell with max. No it's not unusual.

But there is something to see here, simply because the podcast is so worth listening to. There's tons from an honest and vulnerable Maxx about his own struggles. There's also lots about the Raiders. Compton is a good interviewer - no doubt. It's about an hour and a half and I listened to the whole thing on a bike ride today. A very enjoyable and informative 1.5 hours.

I recommend any fan to give it a listen.

Re: Raiders sign DE Yannick Ngakoue (2 year, $26M deal)

Raiders run a 4 man d-line in base.

Ngakoue is an OLB in a 3 man d-line with 4 LBs.

I question his fit.

His contract being lower than expected with a 'no tag' clause also suggests that he will be used as a rotation player, not a 3 down player. A 'sack specialist' is the term, I believe. You realize that Ngakoue got 8 sacks as a rookie under Bradley right? I'm guessing that the Raiders' DC, who drafted Ngakoue and has coached him before with success, has an idea how he fits. I doubt that the guy that matters has any questions about fit.

Re: Report: Raiders receiver Nelson Agholor told teammates “they sucked” after loss to Dolphins

I'd pay Agholor no more than $8 million per on a 2 year deal and if he gets more elsewhere you just thank him for 2020 and move on. We want the young guys to step up, so whatever vet we have is more insurance than it is Plan A. You can't overpay for that.

Re: What are the Chances...

He did all he could do, except complete the pass. I thought the Mahomes love was bad around here, look how defensive everyone gets about Herbert being criticized. Herbert didn’t make the play and he had two chances to do it.

Let the excuses roll for a few more pages! Relax. I'm not defensive about Herbert, just objectively saying he did what he needed to do and realistically saying that we were as close to losing both Charger games as we were to winning both games - could have gone either way. I wish Herbert sucked as a rookie, and I'm hoping he sucks in the future. He had an impressive rookie season... time will tell if there's a sophomore slump.
