I was against the firing of Mike Shanahan. He was trying to modernize the offense and Al insisted the “feared Vertical Game” was still the way to go. The NFL was changing and Al refused to. Being a rebel 1962-1985 was fun. After that he became almost irrelevant to the league.

Here are "weaknesses" for Wilson from various draft profiles (before he was drafted). I did not post the strengths, which are many and far greater than weaknesses:.

Lacks explosive get-off and ability to bend and flatten at the arc.
Hands need to become more skilled and violent as a pro rusher.
Play can be upright and narrow at the point of attack.
Slower to process movement and loses his contain.
Delayed punch and separation, allowing blockers into his frame.
Needs to attack blocks with a little more bitterness.
Questionable speed to threaten the edge as a pass rusher
Quick/reactionary athleticism
Occasionally plays with high pad level
Can get stuck to blocks without the ability to quickly counter
Because he's so tall, his center of gravity is high, which leaves him susceptible to squattier blockers who can get under him and control him
Dipping around the corner far from a forte

BTW, Ferrell has turned into one of the 49ers best run defenders but still is not much of an edge rusher. They do have great coaching on that team and he played next to and in front of some excellent players; in particular, the 49ers have had great linebacker for about 15 years.

I was attacked for saying that Wilson was going to get an indoctrination into the NFL by two OTs that are former first round draft choices. Never said it was the wrong pick -- I liked the pick. Acknowledged that he hardly practiced up to the opener. Yet, just saying my expectations were low for his first game got me in trouble. People overreact here all the time, or they just like picking fights. I think many of us are guilty of that at times.

By the time he realized he was, it was too late. He is still learning. Can't there both a good and a bad thing rather than defend him like someone has says he sucked?

Perhaps you missed my follow up post where, after watching, I amended how I characterized it:
He was lackadaisical in his coverage and it cost him and the team. He kind of slowed up.

He also got beat badly in the end zone, trailing the guy he was covering without a sense of urgency. Easy TD after Wilson looked around a while.

Give the kid a chance . First NFL regular season game especially in Denver at altitude. Of course he's going to be hesitant not wanting to make a mistake from being too aggressive rushing the passer. No one is attacking him -- no one is calling him a bust -- no one is saying he sucked. I think the suggestions here are right -- limited preseason for him, high altitude stadium, hesitation about what he is seeing out there. The NFL is a lot different that Texas Tech. He is an impressive athlete, so if he is smart enough, there is no reason for him not to flourish.

I was criticized by a couple of posters in this thread for saying we should lower our expectations of Wilson and that he would "get an indoctrination by veteran NFL offensive tackles." Well, any question that happened? He was our lowest rated defensive player (see another thread for the offensive and defensive ratings). The Broncos start two former first round OTs and they know what they are doing. He sure looks the part, but he has a long ways to go before he is Reggie White, Watt, or even our own Greg Townsend. I know the no one was claiming he would immediately be those guys, but again, my expectations were realistic, just like they are for AC4. What Brock Purdy has done in so few NFL starts is amazing. I don't expect it to happen for NFL rookies.

Out of respect for those of us who have lost (either living or dead) friends or family to mental illness, can the "funnier" side of Jones meltdown be toned down? Perhaps separate why you think Jones act is bad for the team, how he handles it and how the team handles it from social commentary on mental illness, what we call it, what we call each other, and politics. And I know that I called Jones immature and an idiot at first, but It was not clear what was happening in the first couple of days and it was right before we opened the season. But, it has become more clear that the man needs help and is hopefully getting it.

For what it’s worth - being dominant in preseason is unusual for our 1st round picks. Leatherwood got abused by practice squad edge rushers. Ferrell against 3rd string tackles pretty much looked like Ferrell against starting tackles.

I think Wilson will have his wins but will probably also show why he needs to develop more moves. He was not a dominant force in preseason. He had one play that stood out and it has got a lot of attention. He also had another powerful rush. But he also looked ordinary -- and this was against 2nd or 3rd team offensive linemen. I have high hopes for him despite how Dark Horse is trying to twist my stances, but I don't expect dominance against NFL offensive tackles right out of the gate. Denver's starting tackles are both former first round picks and know what they are doing. Just saying.

Have you looked at the stats from last season? Even with the rushing leader, we were middle of the pack in total yards rushing. We were 11th is passing yards with Carr. Is Jimmy G with a questionable O-line in front of him going to be better? I don't see hate, I see realistic thinking.

Big game for Denver trying to rebound from a coach and a QB situation. Can Sean Payton improve them in short order? They do have some familiar names on defense -- veterans who have performed in the past. Our defense, is kind of no-names except for three of them. I have not studied Denver this year yet, but my instinct is:

Raiders 30 Denver 27. Jimmy G is a steady hand and has great weapons at this disposal.

I just hope we start winning soon. I'm not part of the crowd that finds it fun to dunk on Mark. I think he's been a substantial improvement over his father's twilight years...but moving a team does come with the risk of ruining the legacy. Especially when you lose in the new city. Good point in terms of a step up from the last few years of a declining Al Davis. But, we all knew (well most would admit it) that the move would mean the guys from Buffalo/Dallas/Green Bay saying "hey let's catch that game in Vegas this year and make it a 4-day weekend" would muddy if not sour the home field advantage. I will never forget the good times I had in the Oakland Coliseum with all the true Raiders fans, pee troughs or not. Great times were had by all as long as you were not near the guys spilling beer on you or fighting.

During Renfrow's first year, I fell in love with him (as a football players guys). He was super impressive in almost all areas. Yes, his size was a concern, but I think it was a concussion that laid him down for a while. He is not a "trade him for a 6th or 7th rounder" type player. He is a solid, NFL receiver with great moves and will be a valuable part of the offense this season.

I like getting Muti and Fotheringham a lot.
