After a few days of digestion, I don’t hate it as much but to me it’s a theme of the names and faces changing in the organization while the actions remain the same. New regime comes in and brings in vet QB that bombs. A year later new regime comes in and brings in vet QB that bombs. A year later another new regime comes in and brings in a soon to be 35 year old veteran QB. We have all seen this play out extremely poorly in successive season so understandably I’m having a difficult time getting excited regardless of the positive stats posters want to throw out there. Until it works, this plan has been an absolute disaster for this organization and I’m quite surprised they are going back to this well thinking it will be different this time. Even if Smith plays as well as he did last season, the Raiders may win 9 or 10 games and finish out of the playoffs and Smith will be 36 at the start of the 2026 season. What are we doing here? Was anyone here a week ago really looking at the Seahawks situation of mediocrity and thinking that’s where I want the Raiders to be? I certainly wasn’t. Seattle went from being a yearly contender to a mediocre .500 team (when they fired Pete) and Raiders said “we’d like some of take some of that.”

Respectfully disagree. Darnold had six crappy seasons followed by one good season with a major regression the last two games when teams figured out how to scheme for him. And every team he faces next season will using the same defensive looks until he shows he can beat them.

Smith, by contrast, has had three very good seasons in a row, suggesting he knows how to maintain successful play. He's figured it out.

Agree that Milroe would be a great pick. He can spend the next two years as a Kordell Stewart type of weapon before taking over for Smith in 2027 or so. 21TD to 15 INT is not a very good season, regardless of how it's spun.

For many years the Seahawks have proven to be much less inept than our org. Their plan to trade Geno and sign Darnold is something we should have pursued. We could have kept our third round pick and had a player 7 years younger coming off a better season. Geno is 35 years old and even if he's able to regain his form from a few years ago, his shelf life is close to expired.

This is a typical Raider nepotism move, no team does it better. Reminds me a lot of McDaniels going after Jimmy G, the guy he knows and is comfortable with, but not necessarily the best for what this org needs. I know many will drink the kool aid like is always done, but there were better moves to be made.

The one move that will make me feel better is drafting someone like Milroe, who needs a couple years to develop the arm skill (to match the athleticism). I don't expect Geno will be around much longer than a year or two, so we better have a plan in place so we're not in the same situation next offseason.

The Raiders have to understand what the market is exactly for Darnold, they sure as hell didn't understand it when they signed Jimmy G. Who else is bidding for him? Darnold already had his fill of New York and I would cross both of them off the list, because he doesn't want to go through that nonsense and especially the added media scrutiny with NY teams.

Darnold turns the ball over a lot and it seems like a 180 from what Carroll has wanted. He wants to protect the ball, by running it and being smart when they air it out.

Heavily incentive offer for Darnold and if he says no, oh well. The Jimmy G contract was just insanely bad, it was rumored that we were competing with Houston to sign him, but it's obvious we got played on that one, Houston had their mind set on Stroud from the beginning (and Ziegler is also full of shit when he pretends he had a trade lined up with Houston). Ultimately, we were just bidding against ourselves for the worst free agent option available (Baker Mayfield was right there for us too).

The more I read these posts the fact Minny wants to let a 27 year old qb walk after an MVPish season for an unproven rookie is a little concerning. This is reminding me of a Kerry Collins kinda signing, if it happens. Maybe with Chip we should be prioritizing mobility in our QB a little more. an unproven rookie that they traded up for and drafted in the top 10. If they hadn't made that move there's zero chance they'd let Darnold walk. Vikings think JJ is going to be an elite franchise QB, being paid on a rookie deal, you have to take that route.

The fact that it's even a question (the title of OP thread) is reason enough to take the gamble. There aren't any better veteran options, and we have more cap space than we can probably use efficiently, so take a swing at Darnold and if it wasn't a one hit wonder, you have a damn good QB for 5-6 years.

FTR- I'm in favor of Darnold, but would really like to see Fields in a Chip Kelly offense, I just get the feeling it's a long shot, so I'm not holding my breath for it.

Draft either OH state RB or Skateboo who I think is a true Raider RB. Just gonna say, if Cam Ward was a sure thing to be a star, there's no way a QB needy team like Tennessee would trade that pick. I'd like to have Cam Ward, but that's if he falls to 6, I'm not trading the farm for him. I'd be very happy with Will Howard in round 2. Both probably have the same probability of panning out.

$50 Mil for multiple years? If that's the case, No sale. But I don't see the Rams letting him walk anyway...not without a solid plan B for a QB replacement. A couple of Viking "insiders" on KFAN said that they weren't going to rush a decision on Darnold. They needed to get more information about JJ's recovery before they made any final decisions. Apparently some people are optimistic others think he might not be ready until mid-season or later.

Of course I a have no idea how "inside" they truly are. they've made up their mind by now, they're probably just trying to gauge if there's any trade market for a franchise tagged Darnold (which there won't be).

They drafted JJ with a top 10 pick, you don't pick a QB top 10 unless you really believe in their ability. They're going to roll with JJ unless he's had an injury setback that we don't know about.

Darnold is the best FA option by a mile, he's definitely going to be overpayed, but who really cares, most free agent money is poorly spent, might as well poorly spend and get the best available QB, it's worth it for no other reason than to see if last year was a one hit wonder, or if he can do it again. If he can do it again, it doesn't matter what you pay him.

Benjamin Albright raved about this guy on X, FWIW If the plan is to groom a young successor to take over in house when Pete retires, McQueen could be the guy. Apparently, he turned down interest from other NFL teams this offseason, but chose to come to the Raiders. Definitely an interesting hire. Love the fact that we've been dipping in the NCAA ranks, instead of the normal route of hiring retreads off the scrap heap (which so many vet coaches favor).

He wants to go to a contender and win a Super Bowl. Raiders don’t really seem like an ideal fit for a 30 year old with these demands.

Maybe they can identify players they've personally coached. Wouldn't area scouts have better Intel on teams in a general area or conference? Good coaches identify who the good players are on the other teams. One of the reasons Pete was able to build that Seahawks roster so quickly, he knew the NCAA game so well.

Better than Bevell Chips 4 years running NFL offenses, his run game ranked 1st, 9th, 14th and 4th in rush yards. If Pete wants to get back to a strong ground game, Chip seems like a pretty good choice. I much prefer him to Bevell and will be very interesting to see which direction we go at QB now. Chip has been a fan of mobile QB, he had Mariota at Oregon, Vick in Philly, Kaepernick in SF, wonder if that puts Fields in play?

I'd be open to Fields, but you have to really fortify the offense and give him what Jalen Hurts has, and even then, it's unlikely he'd have the success that Hurts has seen. If they did something crazy like draft Jeanty, then I think Fields could be interesting in a Carroll run heavy scheme (while lobbing it up to Bowers and letting him do what he does).

Fields was a better option than Minshew last year, should have gone that route instead of paying Minshew (and costing us a mid rounder via comp pick). I'd prefer Darnold as a vet option, but Fields would be ok if Pete signs off.

Thoughts on the trade??? Haven't watched much nba since Kobe retired, I've been a lifelong Lakers fan, was a big fan of the Mamba, but don't really care for Lebron. With that said, I can't think of a more suspicious trade in sports history, I don't see any logical reason that Dallas made this trade. It'd be like the Raiders trading Kolton Miller for Joe Burrow.

It's well known that nba ratings are tanking, and it's really hard not to think that this move was made to boost the league viewership, one of the most popular players in the league, moving to the most popular team (for pennies on the dollar) is just way too convenient. Dallas could have got a kings ransom on the open market, a 25 year old who's been all-nba first team the last 5 seasons. Luka is a bonafide superstar, even if Dallas knew something that nobody else does, you just leak that you're trading him and let the offers pour in. Anthony Davis and a first round pick? You gotta be kidding me.

With that said, the Lakers may just get interesting after Lebron retires and they build around Luka, can see myself getting interested in basketball again one day.

Bill Walsh once said that Steve DeBerg was just good enough to get a head coach fired. Pretty well sums up Geno. Sounds like another guy that we had for 9 years. The other problem with players like that, is it keeps you from looking for upgrades at the position. I think you're better off with a young developmental guy who'll hit or miss, at least you'll be in draft position to find another one. The ones who keep you middle of the pack never allow you the opportunity to upgrade (unless you're smart like Andy Reid and make a move realizing the situation he was in with Alex Smith).

Howard is interesting. I am not sure how his game will translate to the next level, he seems to me to have a moderate ceiling. Avery Johnson next year is also interesting to me, I may be biased but if he continues to develop like he has, he could be a great find.

Darnold, we would have ruined last year, but he has to be in serious consideration and is very much a Carroll move as is Jones and Levis. I view Richardson and Lance like I view the "fake Jan Brady." Just pretenders. Richardson and Lance were just examples of high draft picks, but I really don't think they're the type of QB that Brady and Spytek are looking for. Think a pocket passer will be prioritized (being able to scramble is a bonus).
