Mods: I'm putting this story here because it is tangentially Raiders-related. Feel free to move it if you disagree. It's too bad because the Trop was a nice place to stay at the southern end of The Strip if you had Hilton points. Oh well.Tropicana Las Vegas sets closing date ahead of demolition for planned A's ballpark

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The Tropicana Las Vegas resort will close in April, according to a news release from the venue's owners.
Bally's Corporation, in a memo sent Monday morning, says the casino hotel will "cease operations" on April 2.
The Tropicana, which consists of a group of buildings near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue, will eventually be demolished to make way for construction of a new ballpark for the Oakland Athletics, who plan to move to Las Vegas.
Built in 1957, the Tropicana is one of the oldest hotels still standing on the Las Vegas Strip with a rich history of hosting famed stars through the ages.
Bally's new plans for the property include development of "a state-of-the art integrated resort and ballpark."
"The overall development will create energy and vibrancy that previously hasn't existed on this side of the Strip, adding additional excitement for the sports destination," a Bally's spokesperson stated on Monday.
Bally's says it will work to close out all hotel bookings and "relocate all customer reservations" booked beyond April 2. Those with existing reservations are asked to visit the Tropicana's website for more information.
The A's plan to open the new ballpark for the 2028 Major League Baseball season.
In the meantime, they're looking for a temporary home once their lease expires at The Coliseum in Oakland. That could come in the form of a new ballpark currently under construction in Salt Lake City.

First time in Vegas about 20 years ago we went there just to check it out, ended up in the bar talking to Roger, one of the old old old time bartenders, had more great stories about the Rat Pack and the old days of Vegas. MGM really got in first completely control and has destroyed Vegas.Sir Raider Duck, OMS » Tue Jan 30, 2024 9:17 am
Back in 2017, we took a Vegas tour with Frank Cullotta, a former Chicago Outfit (aka Chicago mafia) hitman who'd gone straight and become a tour guide (he was played by Frank Vincent in the film). The man had all kinds of stories about the old Vegas and how the real-life events portrayed in the film went down.AdamJoshua28 wrote Tue Jan 30, 2024 9:10 am:First time in Vegas about 20 years ago we went there just to check it out, ended up in the bar talking to Roger, one of the old old old time bartenders, had more great stories about the Rat Pack and the old days of Vegas. From the renderings that I was able to locate it appears this is a half covered stadium with this strange upside down horseshoe thing going over it? Do I have that right? Is this thing going to be open air as in, the blazing Las Vegas temperatures?!GUYDON » Tue Jan 30, 2024 9:57 am
When the Raiders were in negotiations with the stadium authority, the A's negotiated a 10 year lease on the property.Archaic » Tue Jan 30, 2024 11:06 am
The irony of this situation is that 30 years ago A's owner John Fisher joined a group of Bay Area businessmen in a last minute deal to buy the SF Giants . The group's reasoning was that it was their civic duty to keep the Giants from moving to Florida.Attyla » Tue Jan 30, 2024 11:20 am
Blame the city, not the owner. Oakland has seen every major sport in the city abandon Oakland for economic reasons because the city does not want to invest in sport. And every team that has left Oakland has seen their value increase greatly. They have enjoyed vast improvements in revenue streams. They have become a higher profile team in the marketplace. So what you call irony, I see as business.Archaic wrote Tue Jan 30, 2024 11:06 am:The irony of this situation is that 30 years ago A's owner John Fisher joined a group of Bay Area businessmen in a last minute deal to buy the SF Giants . And to add even more insult to more injury In and out is closing there burger joint, the first one ever for the very first time because of crime in Oakland. Dennys is closing there only location there as well that has been opened for 54 years due to, you guessed it, out of control crime. Cracks me up, companies like Target, whole foods, walgreens, walmart are all closing locations in high crime areas and what do people do? Protest the company! Talk about misplaced anger. They should be protesting there "leaders" (lol). Then they turn around and vote the same ol' crew back in. Einstein's definition of insanity...Attyla wrote Tue Jan 30, 2024 11:20 am:Blame the city, not the owner. The actual irony is you blame the wrong entity for you not having a local pro sport to watch live.

Oh and to your point. I heard about the In & Out thing. Knew about the Target deal I did not know about Denney's though. Parts of that town are just getting really bad. Around the BART station closest to the stadium is really bad. I will go to Vegas to see a game when the team gets good, but I honestly hate Vegas for the most part. I do not do casino style gambling, have very little interest in the cheesy shows and the last strip club I went into was down in New Orleans back in the day because the fellas were going and the wife told me to go with my friends. I think I lasted one beer and went and found my wife. Strip clubs are just not my thing16 to 88 wrote Wed Jan 31, 2024 11:32 pm:And to add even more insult to more injury In and out is closing there burger joint, the first one ever for the very first time because of crime in Oakland. When are they expected to break ground? Year completed? Open air or domed?Attyla wrote Thu Feb 01, 2024 8:07 am:Oh and to your point. I heard about the In & Out thing. Same here.GUYDON wrote Thu Feb 01, 2024 8:15 am:Im in the same boat, I dont gamble and strippers dont do anything for me.
However Vegas has a ton of other fun stuff to do. You can drive race cars go to the Shelby museum/shop, there are great places to eat, lots of good stand up comedy, go take in a medieval joust, sports events , and tons of other stuff.
Vegas has changed a lot and has something for everyone. I last went in 2022 and the city was looking clean and prosperous.
I went to Oakland last year and it reminded me of Mogadishu Somalia.

Breaking ground end of February. No more tailgating or very limited. Will be domed and very much in line with a lot of the newer stadiums. Existing site stays up and running until new digs are done. Then they tear it down and make it some condos/shopping/greenway area for the new riverfront area. Pretty bold project. Two years until the new digs open up so this is a long term project.16 to 88 wrote Thu Feb 01, 2024 6:46 pm:When are they expected to break ground? Year completed? Open air or domed?
