Also backup mlb. Will it be Johnson it Bowman signs? Lee? The new rookie with the baggage?
In 2016, both Richard and Washington showed flashes....hopefully the OL returns to form with a new OC and one of these two players surfaces. I think Lynch will continue to punish defenses - even at his age. Martin is just one huge question mark....a career where he either thrives or looks like shit - his career thus far is a picture of extremes - opposites on a polarity - so what he brings this year is anyone's guess.

As for MLB - I think Johnson and Lee will split time there. Would not be surprised to see Johnson used mostly on passing downs and Lee getting some time on first downs or those downs where the defense anticipates runs. Not sure, Johnson can hold up playing full time the entire year.

Will the Defense be serviceable, with timely plays and a bend don't break stance??? Past years the Defense has given up TD's, First Downs, and cause no turnovers. (in first 10 games no int's, last year)

Could not stop a nose bleed. Problem with new players... they will need time to come together and play as a unit. Might cost us a few games early.

In the past few years the defense, for the vast majority of the time, has been painful to watch. It almost became a certainty - that if an opponent had a third and long - it meant an automatic first down. Raiders D had a lot of problems getting off the field the last few years.

Miscommunication was a huge problem last season with WRs running free all over the place...and that was with a team that had the same damn DC (Norton) and essentially the same personal. I think Guenter will have this team - even with new personal and new scheme - playing more like a cohesive unit - more so than Norton ever managed.

But yes, I agree, there will be some hiccups along the way - until they really come together as a unit on defense. On the other hand, opposing teams are really not going to have a lot of tape on Gruden/Guenter's Raiders (I really do think this team will look entirely different than that of last year's edition)- so they will have the advantage early on of knowing their opponent better than they know the Raiders. So while you are right - with so many new players and completely different coaching staff - they will need time to come together - but than again, given those same reasons - teams will have difficulty game planning against the Raiders - at least early on.

If you look at the D....we have not only a coaching change but added more talent all over the place. D line....much improved...and I dont need to even see a game to make that statement. D backs..much improved...and I dont need to see a game to make that statement. The only place that is somewhat in question for me are the linebackers. If Bowman comes back...then we are improved in that area as well. All in all....I dont see how anyone can be pessimistic about this upcoming year.

Given the poll results in another thread - I think the vast majority of people see that this team has improved greatly - given the moves over the last few months. I agree, the defensive personal has improved dramatically up and down the roster - depth and starters. The acquisitions of Whitehead, Johnson arguably make the LB core a better unit - especially if Lee and Morrow take a step forward in their development and become better players than they were last year - they are still very young and to anticipate some improvement is not a ridiculous leap of faith. But yes, the secondary and DL are miles better than last year's unit. Not even close.

The only thing some are concerned about is how long will it take for these new players to come together to play as a cohesive unit. Gien some posts - I think some are worried that it may take a year before this team comes into their own....while others (myself included) think it will not take that long and whatever disadvantage they have at the beginning of the season will be offset by the fact that the Raider opponents early on will not have a lot of tape on this new team with so many changes in personal and scheme and will have difficulty game planning against the Raiders.

Whatever the case - the first game against the high powered Rams will definitely give us a clear picture of where this team is at the beginning of the year and what they need to do to get to where they want to be.

I don't think there is no denying that we have improved at almost all positions. HUGE upgrade on the defensive side of the ball. We will have superior coaching, better starters, more depth, and more versatile players. Our pass rush will go from least to feast. GO RAIDERS!

I think we all agree there have been some upgrades, but until I actually see a pass rush aside from Mack, I'll hold my breath on that one.

I expect a big improvement in our pass rush this year. The coaching alone was going to create more, but now with the talent we've added its really going to be fun to watch.

I mean I wanna agree with both of you, but then I remember we are the most held team in the NFL and all I can do is pray the refs call the game fairly. But If Edwards is playing with the burst he was playing with before he was hurt last year, or if either of our two DT picks are all pro caliber players, and Irvin goes ham, even the refs won’t be able to fuckin stop us. (Also tank carradine might be a solid pick up too).

The lack of hold calls are ridiculous. Mack blatantly gets tackled and no whistle ever happens, and that was the DPOY.

Others have to step up, no ifs ands or buts... someone is going to have a field day if they play up to that potential.
