Part of the trade agreement was that hags had to agree not to franchise tag him next year, so he'll either get paid there or be a FA.

And I absolutely think we should go hard after him, but if the money gets crazy, move on. No reason not to try. Not giving up draft picks is one thing, but if it's just about money i'm all for it.

Yeah I think he gets paid but he ain't getting Mack like money. The production just isn't there. But I think the Raiders have to make a run at a FA edge rusher. Buckner is another though his sack totals weren't great before Bosa. But he's a good run defender.

Draft and FA have to focus on fixing D though. With a good D our offense gets probably two more possessions a game and is lethal.

My main concern with Clowney is lack of motivation at times. Injuries is second. He took a year "off" at SC when it became obvious he was going to be a 1st round pick. The last two years he has played lights out looking for his contract. He is a major risk for the money he is going to command. I know most of us think he doesn't deserve a Mack-like contract, but apparently that's what he wanted from Texans, which led to his trade.

I personally think Seattle will find a way to keep him after trading a pick for him. But if he does hit the market, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a look.

We don’t need a guy like Clowney... we have Ferrell and Crosby. :loltears:

Imagine if Dion Jordan finishes the season strong with us and re-signs for another year or two... and we get Clowney in the offseason, no MATTER the cost ($20/M per?! Who cares, we can afford it)

With all the young guys like Crosby, Key, and Ferrell with another year of development under their belts, as rotational pass rushers.....

WOW

Clowney passing the Gruden/Mayock attitude test? don't see that happening, Gruden only takes flyers on WRs
Clowney signing for sane money? nope, he'll either go for max cash or Pats/KC ring contender.
Clowney staying fit enough to justify a huge contract without an easy out? doubt it

"The production isn't there".... apparently you just look at stats and don't see him play. He's been a BEAST in almost every game this season.

BUT if you want to go by stats............

He has an 89.4 overall PFF score right now

3 sacks
6 TFL's
1 INT (returned for a TD)
3 passes swatted
3 forced fumbles
2 fumble recoveries
13 QB hits
27 QB Pressures

P.S. - that's in only 8 starts

I can't find the 2019 "Run stop %" stat for him but he was 2nd in the NFL last year.... he is one of the best run stuffing DE's in the game today

The issue isn't his career best peak, more what anyone would get over 4 years for their 80m+.

In the short term I think he’ll be great, but in the medium to long term I worry a little about his motivation, and a lot about his health. That makes the kind of contract he’ll get a massive risk.

We have to inquire, but ultimately I think we should bow out if the money is what I think it will be. We’re not a team with a short window, so I think we should add a couple of guys for that kind of money.
This is a fair take. My knee jerk reaction is pounding the table yes. You don't normally get the chance to sign guys of his caliber. It's rare they hit an open market, and I'd rather see what a talent like that could do for the prospects and players around him than sit on a pile of cash hoping for a better outcome than we have had on defense. It absolutely is time to invest in the defense the way we did on offense so that young talent can start to thrive. But like you said, Clowney's risk may make it a better use of money to look elsewhere in free agency.

I'd offer him $20m a year for 5years and first two and half of that guaranteed.

People might say, why pay a DE money and you let Mack leave.

Clowney for $20m and two first round picks is better then Mack at $25m.

I was of that line of thinking until I saw our answer for Mack after shipping him off. We had a chance to draft a pass rush and have yet to do it, and have backed ourselves into a corner. We need a stabilizing veteran presence to allow these guys an opportunity to progress while not having to play hero ball. Similar to Trent Brown and Incognito coming to our line this year and Miller taking a significant step forward, we need to add a veteran pass rusher. I think Bennie Mayowa was a good start but we can't stop there.

This team could afford him and they could certainly use him, but I, like others am not sure he would impress our front office guys.

I think it would have to be incentive laden. I don’t trust clowney to stay motivated after a pay day.

He played a great game, I'm not giving him jack though based on that one game. How many times can people fall for the same traps? A: A lot it seems.

I will say ESPN had some great replay shots of his pass rush using behind the RB cam with had such a low vertical level, felt like you were in the backfield, just beautiful. He looked the like Predator pushing men aside.
