Lottery is weighted, meaning the worst team has the highest chance to draw the top pick. Second worst team has second highest chance to draw it. And so on.

I’m all for it. At least gives us a chance to get a top pick for a QB after we finish 6-11.

Start crying now. There'll be no 1st round QB in 2023 drafted by the Raiders.

Teams don't tank. A lottery is an admission that teams DO tank.

Think before you drink (the dumbest motto ever since once you are drunk it cancels out all previous logic).

Just say "NO!" (the second dumbest motto since only preteens would follow it)

I saw the interview, he said he could see it sometime in the near future. Nothing was said that we are in fact going to it.

Put me down for no lottery as well. It's too easy to manipulate the product for the sake of entertainment and not competition.

no lottery

the one thing the nfl does well is give the hopeless hope. keeping fan engagement each and every year, all year long. hall of fame game, preseason, regular season, playoffs, super bowl, combine, draft, free agency...rinse and repeat

that fan in detroit, or jacksonville, or houston...they are engaged with hope...hope for the future, that #1 or #2 draft pick...the future of the franchise.

you take that away, there will be unintended consequences.

imagine raiders getting in line for a top 2 pick, league announces, 'oh, we're going to a lottery...looky here, one of our favored sons...green bay, or the patriots, or the giants finished with a better record than the raiders, but they get to pick...jalen carter! raiders get...a set of steak knives [some will catch the reference]

don't fidget with the current process. there has to be a better way of identifying/punishing tankers without blowing the whole thing up

Funny reading some of these posts… The NBA draft is rigged… #1, the lottery balls are not picked live (always done behind closed doors). #2 Dekembi Mutombo (sure that name is miss spelled) Denver Nuggets old center started publicizing how the balls were going to fall (before the fake “lottery”), he nailed it for years, odds of him getting it correct every year are astronomical!!! That being said, if the NFL were to start a lottery, they would need to pick the balls on live TV… If they did it like the NBA, it might make me stop watching football, definitely would kill my draft anticipation.

I think it's extremely rare that teams tank in the NFL. IMO that's just the opinion of frustrated fans. I think the NFL is about parity through the draft and I hope they keep it the way it is.

Here's a link to an article explaining the NBA draft (The Athletic, so has a paywall, but maybe can view some articles for free due to subscription promotion time): https://theathletic.com/3304946/2022/05 ... ery-guide/

Maybe the behind the scenes selections are rigged--I don't know--but it's said that the process is boring to watch and is not compelling tv viewing. In addition, there are representatives from teams at the drawing so unless they are in cahoots with the people drawing, it seems unlikely (to me) to be rigged.

The article is quite detailed and goes into the history of why it is the way it currently runs.

Here's the Mutombo story, Sports Illustrated, May 17, 2016:

NEW YORK — Dikembe Mutombo is rejecting the idea of another NBA draft lottery conspiracy.

Mutombo congratulated the Philadelphia 76ers on winning the No. 1 pick with a tweet Tuesday that came about four hours before the lottery. But he tells The Associated Press it was a ''mistake that happened'' and that he had no knowledge that the 76ers would win.

''I want to let people know there was no conspiracy,'' Mutombo said in a phone interview.

Mutombo played for the 76ers during his Hall of Fame career and now works for the NBA as a global ambassador. On Tuesday afternoon, he received an email from the Sixers organization asking him if he would post a congratulatory message on Twitter if the 76ers won.

The email, obtained by AP, showed some sample tweets that could be used. He copied and pasted one onto his Twitter page - but then immediately sent it.

''It was like maybe 30 seconds, then I realized, `Whoa! What did I do here?''' he said. ''But it was too late. It was out in the air.''

Mutombo quickly deleted the tweet, which included a picture of himself and Allen Iverson, his teammate when the 76ers went to the 2001 NBA Finals. He soon posted another tweet saying he was just excited and had gotten ahead of himself, but was still hoping for a Sixers victory.

The NBA has battled conspiracy accusations since the very first lottery, when the New York Knicks moved up to the No. 1 spot to draft Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing and there was suspicion that one of the envelopes was tampered with so the person selecting would know which one to grab. The league has gone to great lengths to make the event, which is overseen by the accounting firm of Ernst & Young, more transparent, even making a video of last year's drawing to show how it couldn't be rigged.

Mutombo, a four-time Defensive Player of the Year best known for his wagging his finger when he blocked a shot, rejects the idea of that the league would cheat.

''They need to stop that,'' he said. ''The NBA is like such a great organization, they don't even go that way.''
Mutombo got plenty of messages kidding him about his error, and he was able to laugh about it, too.

''I think a lot of people understood the error that was made,'' he said.

A 9 win team could be picking ahead of a 2 win in that situation.

That seems a bit ridiculous to me.

Have it bottom 5 or something

I don't care too much either way, but this has been a problem in the NFL? I haven't heard a peep about this until now. What's the controversy? What happened that has been egregious? Funny thing is the NBA even with a lottery has had a few teams luck out way way more than other teams.
