This league is getting worse and worse. If it weren't for the Raiders I wouldn't bother to tune in at all.
So the Texans who we can all see are the worst team in the league would enter the lottery and could wind up with say the 6th or 10th or 15th pick in the draft!!!?! Then a team like say the Bills, lose Josh Allen to an injury, fall off a cliff for ONE season (the same season) and wind up with the 1st pick in the draft in front of the obvious worst team in the league.
That makes no sense at all.
And keep in mind they would be at the top of the 2nd round, the 3rd round, then come the compensatory picks then the top of the 4th round.
The very next year the worst team in the league (the Texans) miss out on a player that could really help them, wind up dead last the next year and miss out on the 1st pick of the draft and are in 15th position again. Wash rinse repeat. They (the owners) are destroying this game.
As it stands now you never really know who will win a SB and, just as importantly, who will be in it with a shot. Going this way is copying the NBA and their stupid system. Look at the NBA and that is were the NFL is headed. Same few teams at the top dominating championships. Awful.
What the NFL is admitting is that they think (know?) teams are tanking on purpose. So there is cheating involved. You know, like them never looking into why the officiating is heavily stacked against us thorough out the years.
In my last example the Bills lose Josh Allen to an injury and fall off a cliff, they wind up just missing the playoffs but then by chance draw the #1 spot and they are off to the races for the next 5-10 years of dominance. It's not just the first pick in the draft we are talking about. It's the top of the board in the 2nd and 3rd round then compensatory picks at the bottom of the 3rd then picking in the top of the 4th more compensatory picks at the bottom of the 4th...
Still, there was a year that one team had one ball in the lottery and they got the number 1 pick. What this does is penalize a team that is honestly really bad to pay for the sins of teams that are presumably tanking. See my example above. The Bills lose Josh Allen, tank on purpose and get into the top 4.
Every owner wants their own team to win, and they're all watching.
They are going to ransom the #1 pick away to slot #4, get a whole bunch of picks and set themselves up for years to come. A team that really needs a pick shouldn't be penalized for a team that is purposely tanking. As the NFL stands now you really don't know who can go from cellar dweller to in the SB. The NBA sucks. It's the same teams over and over again at the top.
You want to see the same dominance as in the NBA? Set up a lotto where a team that is good ends up in the lotto and selects a pick that betters their current position even when they didn't deserve it.
We obviously are not tanking and the Texans after offing Watson are obviously not tanking and there are teams in between that aren't. So in this example we don't deserve the #1 pick in the draft and the Texans, although have a weighted pick could end up with a lesser pick. I have pointed out this very thing.
Happens in the NBA it will happen here. It's called gambling.
The order in the draft should not be left up to a lotto. lol.
They were horrible and in need of a QB and it wouldn't surprise me if they did truly suck for Luck. But we are talking about one team presumably tanking for a QB in the draft.
Now insert the lotto. Might as well tank anyways to increase your odds of getting Luck. See how that makes no difference?
Instead of one team suck for Luck, every team in the lotto suck for Luck.
If you are a good team with a franchise QB and you wind up with the #1 pick you ransom it off to restock your roster to the hilt.
Now multiply this by every team in the NFL that would be in the presumed lotto. After all, the NFL can't say you are tanking now because of the lotto. Now instead of one team tanking that is in need of a QB you will have every team tanking behind them to increase their odds of bettering their pick. AND... AND just as importantly, maintaining their position (odds) that they have and not falling behind in the draft to a team 5 or 6 positions behind them in the season.
A good team that lost their franchise QB to injury might as well lose that last game (if not more) of the year to get in the final lotto position instead of make a one and done playoff appearance. They stand much more to gain with one ball in the lotto and moving up 4-5 positions or even to #1 as we have already witnessed in the NBA then to play one playoff appearance on the road.
It's not a perfect science the way it is now but it makes it even less so by bringing gambling into the equation.

No no that's not how it works. In the nba if you are the worst team in the league you won't end up with 6th, 10th, 15th or anywhere near there. The worst you can do is 4th. You can get the number 1 pick of course but you are guaranteed to not get any lower then 4th. No matter who wins, someone will say it's fixed. Cleveland wins and gets Lebron James, and people say it's because the league wants the biggest star in Cleveland.... Even if they do (very questionable) the worst team in the league could get screwed repeatedly in this. I guarantee there was exactly zero people in the NHL head office that wanted the Oilers winning the 1st overall pick to get McDavid and yet it happened.
