I agree. QB is by far the most important position in all of sports.HesterLayes wrote Mon Jan 23, 2023 7:15 pm:Purdy may well be an exception this year, but if you want to be legit year in and year out you need a stud.I’d take Burrow in a second and worry about the rest later

That year I sent a trade up proposal involving Seattle to get Hurts to Raiders headquarters.Jeremyturner1976 wrote Tue Jan 24, 2023 6:20 am:The kid seems to love football and winning. It is a great spot to be in.
If he puts together another good to great season, his price tag jumps significantly, so I also think they sign him this offseason.
I am still disappointed our guys did not get him, Gruden and Mayock loved him but wanted him in later rounds. Idiots, both of them.

It is not that we didn't try the mediocre QB route. After Gannon, we had Kerry Collins because Al fell in love with his arm strength. The list of mediocre to below average QBs is as under:signal wrote Tue Jan 24, 2023 10:45 am:I agree. QB is by far the most important position in all of sports.
But what I am beginning to understand about football as it is now, with the talent at the position - that there is not much difference between guys that are considered highly by many, the Carr's and Dak's of this league who cost a A LOT of money and someone you can get on the cheap. That their performance is really not that much different.
While there may be a small elite club at the top of really good QBs. And yes, no one can deny their ability to win games and transform a franchise. But after that, there is a huge drop off and there are a lot of QBs with similar capabilities to win or lose. Call me silly but I think Stidham could do as well as Carr or Dak. I think Purdy is doing it.
In short, if you don't have that elite QB, then do not pay your QB like he is one like we have done, and well like Dallas has. You go cheap....get the same production and fortify the rest of your damn team. And if an elite QB comes your way, you grab him.
Seattle saw this reality and won the offseason last year by getting rid of an expensive QB and got a huge haul in draft capital in return and paid very little and next to nothing for a journey man at QB and got BETTER results at the position. Something I was actually calling the Raiders to do last offseason on this forum. Now, unfortunately he will most probably be released with nothing gained.
IF you do not have an elite QB then don't pay BIG for an average one to be one. That is why I hope the Raiders do not try and spend big money on some of the QBs in free agency...who all most likely will be average at best. Right now, there are a lot of QBs in the league that can play at that level. The drafts over the year have given the league a lot of average QBs....you need only have one on the cheap....and build a monster D to compete.
And with that, you take your swings in the draft in hopes of finding one. BUT paying huge money for a guy like Garoppolo is not the answer.
Either you pay big because you have the an elite QB or you go dirt cheap. Given the talent in the league right now, that would be my approach.
And given what I have seen from Stiddy, I would definitely run with him next year on the cheap. IF a QB drops in your lap in the draft or there is one there you REALLY like, you go get him. If not, you run with Stiddy, and do everything you can to transform your D into something that can wreak havoc.

Did I say that my assessment was based upon the past? I specifically stated that the current batch of QBs, there is a lot of parity after the elite group. A 7th round rookie just outplayed a guy who is making HUGE money in a playoff game. Right NOW, there are a lot of QBs whose play at QB is not much different than those who are not elite but getting big money.silver_ghost wrote Wed Jan 25, 2023 12:09 am:It is not that we didn't try the mediocre QB route. Andrew Walter, Aaron Brooks
Josh McCown, Daunte Culpaper (clearly on his decline)
Couple of forgetful years with Jamarcus Russell (below average QB paid a king's ransom)
Jason Campbell
Bruce Gradkowski
Carson Palmer/Kyle Boller
Terrelle Pryor
Matt McGloin
Matt Flynn
Recalling their performance has already given me a headache.
