Oregon State (2005) Graduate assistant:
QB Matt Moore

Pittsburgh (2008–2009) Offensive assistant: Ben Roethlisberger / Byron Leftwich
*Super Bowl winning season. So he’s gotta ring.

Pittsburgh (2010) Wide receivers coach:

Carolina Panthers (2011–2012) Offensive quality control coach:
Cam Newton

Cleveland Browns (2013) Wide receivers coach:

Minnesota Vikings (2014–2016) Quarterbacks coach:
Teddy Bridgewater / Matt Cassel / Christian Ponder

Michigan (2017) Offensive analyst:
QB No one of note.

Carolina Panthers (2018–2019) Quarterbacks coach:
Can Newton / Kyle Allen / Garrett Gilbert / Taylor Heinicke

Washington Football Team / Commanders (2020–2022) Offensive coordinator:
Carson Wentz / Taylor Heinicke / Sam Howell

I see a lot of big QBs. Levis and Richardson types. He also must have backed Taylor Heinicke who seems Studman-like.

Where is the nepotism in this hire? I couldn't see any connections between Turner and the current staff.

His last name.

People in the building knows his father. That’s really all it takes.

Really?!?! Or maybe he's good at his job? I can't believe that Shanahan guy is still hanging onto a job based on his daddy's name.

Where did you come up with the conclusion that he’s good at his job?

All I see is below-average results

And before we say “oh well he had this guy and this guy”

Doesn’t matter. Make it work, coach.

I guess I should have said that they believe he's good, and have based that on something a lot more in depth than your nepotism theory. It's a lot more likely that they're hiring people they think will help, than hiring a guy because someone in the building has met his father.

Remember that we're not hiring him as a playcaller. If we were, I'd be worried. But we're hiring him as an idea guy/another QB tutor (bringing our total to four not counting McD). Everything I've seen says he does well in that role.

I think it’s actually more likely it’s based on nepotism just off the fact it’s a league-wide occurrence that’s gone on for 50+ years and counting. Nearly 80 father-son coaching pairs is hard to ignore.

I’m not necessarily against the hiring. Just feel like it was a role to fill, and someone said “I know a guy” and called him

Wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t even interview multiple candidates.

I wouldn't disagree that nepotism helps to get guys in the NFL door - and Turner got in the door a long time ago. I just happen to believe that they have to prove themselves beyond that to move up in the league - because they are getting hired and promoted by guys whose jobs are on the line year after year.

I've worked around guys who were the smartest guys in the room at their own family's business. Nepotism got them in, competence and giving a shit made them good at their jobs.

Good grief.

Moves like this, while not as impactful as player personal moves (obviously), do go about impacting the overall chances for success a franchise may enjoy. Josh has already failed once as a HC and do not think it out of the realm of possibilities that he sees this as his last chance to get it right...if he wants to continue to be a HC at this level.

Now, if you think he is going around picking up coaches based upon people's last names, than you must think the man is an idiot. Not every coach in this league has the ego and temerity to sign his son to the coaching staff. And well, not sure why Josh would give two shits about this man's last name.

Is it not more reasonable to think that Josh wants the best coaching staff surrounding him so that his chances of succeeding improve? Would he not go about making decisions that would actually help him in fortifying his career?

Or would he be so stupid to simply sign a guy who has a last name.....someone who has no connection to him or his family...but still do so, because it might for some weird reason, make him feel better? The argument of nepotism makes no sense.

He gave Cam and Bradford their best years. As an OC he has sucked, but in Washington those QBs were pretty damn bad.

McD is an excellent offensive mind.If he thinks it will help ,I’m onboard.

Like I said earlier, maybe Turner will be the guy on the iPad with our QB instead of McD so he can watch the damn game

Norv turner had a hand in convincing the patriots to sign cam newton. So to say the connection isn’t there, just isn’t true.

He got the job bc of his daddy.
