If Hoyer is essentially an extra QB coach who's not subject to CBA rules for player contact that regular coaches have to abide by, can we just fail him on the physical, put him on IR, and have him help young QBs all next season without wasting a roster spot?signal wrote Mon Nov 20, 2023 10:34 am:I do think the Raiders must address the QB situation in the offseason. But how is the question.
I think most of us know that Jimmy Picks and Hoyer should be shown the door and that means the Raiders have a QB situation to address no matter what AO4 does. He can throw for 300 yards and 3 TDs a game here on out and the QB situation needs to be addressed because of what is behind him.
Given Jimmy Picks I am sick of paying big for a mid tier vet QB who does not make that much of a difference. That much I do know.
But count me in that group who is uncertain how to address the QB situation until I get more information watching the rest of the games.
But I do know two things, the QB situation does need addressing and two, I don't want to address it with another mid tier vet QB who is expensive with hopes that somehow he may all of sudden become something he was not in the past.

AOC has been intercepted on 4.1% of his attempts, which is third worst in the NFL, with teammate Jimmy Garoppolo last at 5.4%. O'Connell is 26th with 6.5 yards per pass.Rdrfn64 » Mon Nov 20, 2023 6:35 pm
When AOC wasn't dealing with offensive penalties Holds, Off. pass interference etc. he put the offense in 3rd and 1 situations several times and the pathetic O line couldn't clear a hole big enough for Jacobs to get 1 yard! One could only imagine who the Raiders might have drafted for the Oline with Wilsons pick in the last draft.AdamJoshua28 » Mon Nov 20, 2023 6:38 pm
You just wait he's going to be freaking awesome, it's not his fault, Carr is... oh i mean AOC is the man!Sold My Soul wrote Mon Nov 20, 2023 6:07 pm:AOC has been intercepted on 4.1% of his attempts, which is third worst in the NFL, with teammate Jimmy Garoppolo last at 5.4%. Like many have said already, the Raiders still need at least another QB whether O’Connell's the starter next year or not.16 to 88 » Mon Nov 20, 2023 10:13 pm
A couple of things... so you don't look at the good throws? And no, not "any" mid QB can make them or does. We just got rid of one who we watched for the last 9 years not be able to make them and another is on the bench because our HC sees he can't make them.CWood24 wrote Mon Nov 20, 2023 2:21 am:It’s not the good throws any mid QB will make them it was all the bad things he did that are the problem the 2 INT’s in the 4th really worry me

I fully agree with this.Raider727 wrote Mon Nov 20, 2023 7:51 pm:Like many have said already, the Raiders still need at least another QB whether O’Connell's the starter next year or not.
I don't want the Raiders to get another expensive veteran in free agency, even what Hoyer is getting paid is too much.
Draft another QB regardless. If O’Connell completely shits the bed, which I doubt, then maybe trading up in the draft for QB is reasonable.
Either way we need another QB and competition won't hurt. The Raiders need to play who's the best option.
This year it happens to be O’Connell and not jimmy or hoyer. And O’Connell wasn't served anything on a silver platter either.
Not getting valuable reps in the offseason or even the beginning of the season didn't help. And having 2 head coaches and offensive play callers has to be hard to adjust on the fly.
He has the rest of the year to prove himself, I'm rooting for him to succeed, but first and foremost I just want the Raiders to win!

What exactly are the expectations for this guy? He's a 4th round rookie making his 4th start with an OC that is in his 3rd game (I think) calling plays with a bad OL. That's not exactly a recipe for success. Some on here are expecting him to be able to make every throw and decision like a top 5 pick would be able toAttyla » Tue Nov 21, 2023 4:46 am
Exactly, he was a 4th rounder for a reason. I have said all along, while he is intriguing, he is a third day pick. You wanted to rush the guy onto the field. I heard stuff like he is "elite" and "the best QB on the roster" after 2 games. It is this kind of slack jawed analysis that causes a lot of disappointment after a rookie crashes back down to earth, and they all do.Hellbound wrote Tue Nov 21, 2023 3:41 am:What exactly are the expectations for this guy? Let the game come to him. These things take time, and it may never actually happen. He may be a starter in the league or a career backup. Given he was a 4th rounder, either would be great for us.

Jimmy has a vast amount more experience which counts for something. He does not have the arm but has been traditionally an average QB. He also understands the game speed. In those regards, he would be better. Aidan just gives us a better chance of winning because he can go deep. But christening him the best after two games was some pretty bad analysis.AngryRaidersFan wrote Tue Nov 21, 2023 4:47 am:Sadly he is the best qb on the roster lol

Come on man. This board wants results. They expect a 4th rounder to cone out and light it up and take us to the Super Bowl his first season. I can't wait to see the posts next year if and when we draft another QB that needs time develop are we going to be in the same boat again? If we do draft another AOC should still start and get rid of the other 2 trash cans we gotAttyla wrote Tue Nov 21, 2023 4:46 am:Exactly, he was a 4th rounder for a reason. yea, expectations were huge after he beat up the Giants. It was a quality win for sure but he was playing the Giants. I wanted to see what we have in him, but while there was a lot of "start Aidan now" after the first game of the season, I really did want him to sit until around game 6 to see the game speed from the sidelines. I was also convinced our line might get him wrecked and said so. Mack proved me prophetic. Not that I am any genius, anyone could have seen that. But here we are, he got his bad game out of his system. Now he needs to learn from it, watch the tape on the Chiefs D and see what he can do against a guy who is elite but just had a bad game. That guy is going to deliver against us. He always does. And Reid has our number as well.RenoRaiders75 wrote Tue Nov 21, 2023 5:57 am:Come on man. This board wants results. Mannings rookie year was a totally different era. The defenses could still play defense.signal wrote Tue Nov 21, 2023 6:57 am:I have no idea how this will play out. I do know that no one here posting does either.
Making definitive statements about a rookie QB based upon four starts is not astute evaluation but rather a knee jerk response.
There are a lot of mitigating circumstances: change in HC & OC during those first four starts, weak and inconsistent OL and was relegated to third on the depth chart during the offseason and most of the season till he took the keys.
That said, I have am not saying he will be that guy who should have the keys moving forward, but do know for now, he has earned those keys and just think it best we support him as he will be the starter for the remainder of the season.
