O'Connell's first game after being elevated to #1 was vs a Wink Martindale D, which all the experts predicted would confound him. The next one was vs a top Jets D. Then a top passrush in the Dolphins D. Then another top D overall in the Chiefs. Baptism by fire.signal wrote Fri Dec 01, 2023 7:33 am:Yes, the Chief's D is for real. Before the Raider game, their D had limited opposing QBs to a mere 170 yards per game. AO4 threw for 248 and a TD and had the highest QBR of that particular Sunday. That Chief's D has made some really good QBs look down right bad this year. Hell, all the talk thus far this season in Chef land has been about their surprisingly good D.
AO4 is getting a baptism of fire. He has played against some damn good Ds. I do think that possibly it might be for the best. While it could crush some rook's confidence, I do not see it happening with AO4. He is not overly emotional but rather is very cerebral and appears to be more about finding out why things work or do not work. He doesn't seem to get too emotional either way. So, yes, I like the fact that he has had to play against some of the top tier Ds so early in his career. It has most probably helped his learning curve.

Come on, how could you not say we have been spoiled?! We watched the great Carr lead us the toilet bowl year after year for the last decade!GoodTimeCharlie wrote Tue Nov 28, 2023 3:04 pm:You say some stupid shit. Mostly stupid shit. But calling Raider fans spoiled has gotta be the stupidest shit I have ever seen written here.

How many QBs have we drafted in our history in the first round?live.B.A.raida wrote Wed Nov 29, 2023 9:26 pm:Never hurts to have a Matt Schuab as your #2… but I hope the Raiders try for that true elite QB.

I don’t think dumping him is smart but I also think going qb in the first is smart. They can battle it out.Xramfan wrote Fri Dec 01, 2023 8:32 pm:Aiden has made a few throws that made me say "Fuck me".
I`m so willing to see how the next few games go before dumping him.

There’s a difference between looking good for a 4th round rookie… and looking good. Imo Aiden looks good for a 4th round rookie… but pretty meh overall. Call me a pessimist.Be_Easy_25 » Sat Dec 02, 2023 7:22 am
He just looks good to me with no qualifiers and the main issue I have with him (that the game is just a little bit fast for him) is something that has a high chance of resolving with more game time and a better o-line.Raider727 » Sat Dec 02, 2023 10:44 am
Regardless of what anyone thinks of O’Connell, they should be rooting for his development anyway. He's on a cheap rookie contract for the next 4 years.signal » Sat Dec 02, 2023 10:51 am
AO4 has some games under his belt. It is time they open up the cupboard and see what happens. The Raiders really have nothing to lose at this point. If you go down, go down swinging.Raider727 wrote Sat Dec 02, 2023 10:44 am:Regardless of what anyone thinks of O’Connell, they should be rooting for his development anyway. Look at all the QB's that went down just this season, having at worst a legit backup who is playing for peanuts is a blessing.
The only ones that mainly hate on O’Connell are those that want him to fail, so the Raiders can have a better draft pick because if he starts balling out that means the Raiders are most likely winning.
What I'd like Bo to start doing with O’Connell is designing plays where O’Connell is in open space because you know he isn't going to take off running.
Design some roll-outs and get creative with play-action plays to give the rookie time to let plays develop.

All true. It will be interesting to see if the extra time from the bye week has them trying to expand the passing game more. It's really the first chance for Hardegree and O'Connell to breathe between games and build and improve instead of just trying to survive in roles they were thrust into on a short week midseason.signal wrote Sat Dec 02, 2023 10:51 am:AO4 has some games under his belt. The conservative play calling during Josh's tenure this year was a complete shitshow. Bo and AP need to separate themselves from that circus and let the boys on offense play. They need to be far more aggressive.

While I would like to see them become more aggressive there are two factors holding that back. The OL and AP wanting to bring the nasty back and feature a run game, that perhaps is sexy trying to bring back the past but this hasn't been shown in the modern game to be a successful tactic. If it were, the conservative nature of coaches would simply be doing that. I can see in general across the NFL conservatism is coming back as O's have become less explosive from what we've seen. My current thoughts are the NFL will always have these cycles, if a coach is allowed to get away with being conservative, they will hedge towards that. It is up to how successful the progressives are against them on the field, it seems group-think would be if no one is challenging them, they'll go back to shell-type conservatism.signal wrote Sat Dec 02, 2023 10:51 am:AO4 has some games under his belt. If the Raiders had an OL that could impose their will on opposing Ds, I would be all in. But they do not. Right now, the offense should pass first to open up the run game. Doing the opposite was and would be a disaster. AP needs to step back and instead of trying to force a square peg in a round hole, look at the talent on the team he has and alter the gameplan accordingly.SkullCrusher wrote Sat Dec 02, 2023 11:05 am:While I would like to see them become more aggressive there are two factors holding that back. Can't run the ball. Can't pass block. 1st time new raw OC with the other OC's playbook. Considering all those things I think he's playing pretty good.
