Exactly. He literally lost them the SB twice. They won despite him. I’m surprised Shanahan made him even look as good as he did. It made people actually think you can win with him. & I wouldn’t even say he was average.Raider727 wrote Wed Feb 21, 2024 8:53 am:Jimmy was only average at his best imo, never liked him as a starting qb for the Raiders. As a niners qb yeah because I knew they would never win the big one if the game was put in his hands. Handing the ball off 46x in the NFC championship was his way of taking his team to the Superbowl....

That is exactly how Marty Schottenheimer beat the Raiders many many times. Play conservatively and have patience the Raiders would make all the mistakes.Opoponax50 wrote Wed Feb 21, 2024 8:41 am:One of the things it seems we can count on with AP leading the team is that the best player will start.
Come the first day of the 2024 regular season, if O'Connell is starting, it'll mean he won the job. If it's someone else, then it'll mean that guy won the job.
O'Connell looks to have become proficient at not fucking it up, which is a big part of the job. Look at the teams who lost in the playoffs this past season. Most of those games weren't won through dominant performances, but because the other side shot themselves in the foot. Take the Ravens for example. The best running team in the league refused to run the football and their MVP QB choked huge dick during critical moments.
So O'Connell has at least that going for him. That doesn't mean he should be the automatic starter, but he can make most of the throws and won't do stupid shit. After all these years of watching this game and this team in particular, I've come to the conclusion that Do No Harm is half the battle.

Wow! Why would you settle for serviceable? We have a playoff caliber team outside of QB.rich72 wrote Wed Feb 21, 2024 10:40 pm:I trust Telesco and AP, I dont want a QB in the 1st round. AOC is servicable and we have too many holes to fill on defense plus oline.

Cool. Have fun with your 7-10 or 8-9 Raiders in 2024.rich72 wrote Wed Feb 21, 2024 10:40 pm:I trust Telesco and AP, I dont want a QB in the 1st round. AOC is servicable and we have too many holes to fill on defense plus oline.

I do want a long term answer at QB just like everyone else. That being said, if AO is behind center next season, I am not going to panic. We did pretty good with him. I am expecting an uptick in his play (experience, training camp as a starter, a real OC to work with). I am also expecting an uptick with our D. Besides draft picks and FA signings, I expect some guys to step up. I think Devine will be this years Koonce. I am also expecting big things from Wilson and Darien Butler. We will have some growth from our pups (Burney, Pola-Mao, etc.) who will provide solid depth and could eventually start down the road. I know we are all wondering if this D is legit or was last season just fools gold. I believe in this D (sorry if some think I am being a homer).chucker » Thu Feb 22, 2024 6:44 am
I won't panic if O'Connell is the starter next year. But I'll panic if the team doesn't demonstrate that getting a long term QB is a priority because that is just an indication that the wrong guys are making decisions. To me that means that you're at least trying to get a good one in the draft, even if he's a guy who won't start right away.RI RAIDER wrote Thu Feb 22, 2024 5:51 am:I do want a long term answer at QB just like everyone else. We see a quality back up.erickench wrote Thu Feb 22, 2024 6:41 am:He's already convinced me that we don't need to draft a quarterback. Everybody is down on this guy and I don't know why.

I think he's better than that. Had he played a full season he would've had 3600 yards passing with 20 TDs, which isn't bad for a rookie.Dark Horse wrote Thu Feb 22, 2024 7:02 am:We see a quality back up.

Here is an interesting experiment that one could do:erickench wrote Thu Feb 22, 2024 1:00 pm:I think he's better than that. Had he played a full season he would've had 3600 yards passing with 20 TDs, which isn't bad for a rookie.

Not a guy I'd bet against.16 to 88 wrote Sun Feb 18, 2024 10:20 pm:I would be shocked if he wasn't.
You don't walk on to a college like Purdue and wrestle away the starting quarterback position by sitting in front of the television gnawing on a fudgesicle and watching the Flintstones. What he did to get that position speaks massive volumes about his character.
