Stanford and Cal made the best deal they could given the Big 10, Big 12 and SEC's lack of interest (joining the ACC), but that's going to mean a LOT of long plane flights and hit to their recruiting efforts, as the only conference road games not requiring a cross-country flight will be the ones against each other.
FWIW: Harbaugh has been a winner everywhere he's gone. I wouldn't be opposed to his hire, but I'd frankly prefer rolling the dice with a good young coordinator if AP proves not to be the answer.
How about we hire a head of Football Operations...followed by a GM...and then a HC....

I'm not arguing with you, Chucker - I tend to agree with you. I'm not advocating for Harbaugh, either. I'm just pointing out that there is no evidence for what kind of GM Harbaugh would want, since he's never got to make that decision. In his only NFL HC stint, he was as subordinate to the GM as any coach that I can think of, and that didn't work out well for the 49ers. The records with and without Harbaugh, as well as the general hindsight consensus in the Bay Area, argue that Baalke should have been subordinate to Harbaugh.

Harbaugh, has won pretty much everywhere he’s ever coached. He has brought Michigan back to prominence (college cheating will likely not bother NFL teams). He turned the San Francisco 49ers into a winner. He knows what he’s doing.
High-profile coach:
Hiring Harbaugh would get people’s attention around the NFL. Davis badly wants his franchise to be relevant. Hiring Harbaugh would qualify. It could help in free agency as players may be impressed by Harbaugh’s resume.
He’s knows quarterbacks:
One of the keys for future success in Las Vegas is the quarterback position. The Raiders will need to identity a quarterback. Perhaps it will be rookie Aidan O’Connell who Harbaugh is already familiar with form his Purdue days in the Big Ten Conference. Yet, Harbaugh could try to make a big swing for a rookie quarterback in the draft next year. Either way, Harbaugh has a strong track record with quarterbacks.
CONS
He’s gets a wandering eye:
Harbaugh has flirted with leaving Michigan on multiple occasions over the years. He did the same thing in previous stops. Harbaugh always seems to have his eye on the next gig. That can get tiresome for his employers.
He can be difficult:
He can be difficult or confrontational with the executives above him.
9 years since he's been in the NFL:
Conclusion:
Honestly, I can get fans wanting the Raiders to go after Harbaugh (the dude wins), but I could also get if fans think it wouldn’t be worth the while."

From reading as much as i can on his career I'll add,
- He's known as the Quick Fix maestro. (just copy/pasting :-)
- At each of his 4 stops as head coach (San Diego, Stanford, 49r's, Michigan, he's doubled the teams wins within 6 months. (I guess that means in one offseason and in the first season he's doubled their wins)
- He is a leader of men. He doesn't call the offensive plays, he focusses on preparing the team and leading his players towards believing in his vision.
- He's uber competative.
My only concern with Harbaugh is Would he would get full control ? He didn't have full control with the 49rs. Im really hoping the Raiders hire a GM that has all the control that a GM should have, not another situation like Gruden and McDaniels. Although you can argue that for the first 3 years in Harbaughs return to the NFL he will have a big advantage in the draft like Pete Carrol and Jimmy Johnson showed.. Also many probably don't know that Jim Harbaugh first went into scouting department after his playing career was over, and this was before he became an assistant coach with the Raiders... He will have a big advantage not only because he scouted these current College QB's but he's game planned against many of them.. Big opportunity in picking the correct QB if the Raiders can get to 5th or 6th pick in the draft.
I like Antonio Pierce, he deserves to show what he can do in the remaining games, but from what ive seen he hasn't shown enough yet to secure the head coaching job.

If Mark brings in Harbaugh and gives him the keys to the franchise (something I'd give at least a 50/50 chance of happening), the GM speculation won't matter. I don't want a head coach in charge of the football world - I want a GM. It's part of the reason I don't want Harbaugh. Its so difficult to have a coach who is a power broker. I agree with you Chucker. Mark loves the big, splashy hire. There would be none bigger than Harbaugh. That actually brings up a really interesting discussion with regard to Harbaugh. First of all, Harbaugh has never got to coach under his own GM. He's only had one NFL coaching job, and Trent Baalke was the GM during his tenure. Baalke was never Harbaugh's guy, and he definitely wasn't subordinate to him, in fact it was the opposite. There was a lot of friction friction between the two, and Baalke eventually fired Harbaugh because of it. Head of football ops is a vernacular term I used. I could have said, president, or ceo, or chairman....The intent of my post was to get someone in the front office who knows, understands, and has been associated with the NFL for a number of years and understands the complexities required to not only build, but sustain a winning organization.
