I always thought his dad Willie did a great job with the defense back when Jon hired him, and I thought he was let go too soon.chucker » Thu Nov 30, 2023 8:41 am
I think it's too early to get too wrapped up in head coaching candidates. I want the focus to be on the GM position. I don't know much about Shaw really - I know he was a hot name for years and that's likely cooled off with losing seasons, but I cannot remember ever watching a game where he was the head coach. It seems that the current environment in CFB may just preclude Stanford from having any sustained success again.Sir Raider Duck, OMS » Thu Nov 30, 2023 2:38 pm
If Mark brings in Harbaugh and gives him the keys to the franchise (something I'd give at least a 50/50 chance of happening), the GM speculation won't matter. Harbaugh will have the guy he wants as GM, be it Champ Kelly, Ed Dodds or someone else.chucker wrote Thu Nov 30, 2023 8:41 am:I think it's too early to get too wrapped up in head coaching candidates. I don't want a head coach in charge of the football world - I want a GM. It's part of the reason I don't want Harbaugh. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I don't think we're hiring Harbaugh.Sir Raider Duck, OMS wrote Thu Nov 30, 2023 2:38 pm:If Mark brings in Harbaugh and gives him the keys to the franchise (something I'd give at least a 50/50 chance of happening), the GM speculation won't matter. Its so difficult to have a coach who is a power broker. I agree with you Chucker. Hard pass on Harbaugh which is not a reflection of his ability as a coach.chucker wrote Thu Nov 30, 2023 2:42 pm:I don't want a head coach in charge of the football world - I want a GM. Mark loves the big, splashy hire. There would be none bigger than Harbaugh. And now that the NCAA is examining his every move with a fine-tooth comb, he may decide to get out of Dodge while the getting's good.chucker wrote Thu Nov 30, 2023 2:42 pm:I don't want a head coach in charge of the football world - I want a GM. Last dynamic duo hired went in the order of HC then GM.....chucker wrote Thu Nov 30, 2023 2:42 pm:I don't want a head coach in charge of the football world - I want a GM. It's part of the reason I don't want Harbaugh. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I don't think we're hiring Harbaugh.

That actually brings up a really interesting discussion with regard to Harbaugh. First of all, Harbaugh has never got to coach under his own GM. He's only had one NFL coaching job, and Trent Baalke was the GM during his tenure. Baalke was never Harbaugh's guy, and he definitely wasn't subordinate to him, in fact it was the opposite. There was a lot of friction friction between the two, and Baalke eventually fired Harbaugh because of it. Looking at the 49ers record around that time:chucker wrote Thu Nov 30, 2023 2:42 pm:I don't want a head coach in charge of the football world - I want a GM. Never heard of a "head of football operations" generally the heirarchy is owner- GMSold My Soul wrote Fri Dec 01, 2023 8:16 pm:Last dynamic duo hired went in the order of HC then GM.....
How about we hire a head of Football Operations...followed by a GM...and then a HC....
Seems logical.

I feel like David Shaw is judged so unfairly. So many people just write him off as a hack because things ended bad at Standford. Everyone knows how hard it is to compete when they can't recruit like everyone else. Look at Deion in the media right now. Crying for more money. I mean, come on.16 to 88 » Sat Dec 02, 2023 10:54 pm
Interesting take, thanks.raiderramon wrote Sat Dec 02, 2023 4:41 am:I feel like David Shaw is judged so unfairly. So many people just write him off as a hack because things ended bad at Standford. Everyone is quick to forget about his 8 straight winning seasons. David Shaw is a good coach and he should be interviewed by multiple owners.

Head of football ops is a vernacular term I used. I could have said, president, or ceo, or chairman....The intent of my post was to get someone in the front office who knows, understands, and has been associated with the NFL for a number of years and understands the complexities required to not only build, but sustain a winning organization. I do not believe we have anyone with those credentials currently in the Raiders front office.rcraider wrote Fri Dec 01, 2023 10:57 pm:Never heard of a "head of football operations" generally the heirarchy is owner- GM
