We have seen QB needy teams stick to their grades and forego drafting one in the 1st if the grade wasn’t there. Last year Levis was that guy. Hooker to a lesser extent.
The Pickett draft was kind of the same. Media was talking about Willis, corral, etc… potentially going fairly high in the 1st.
I personally think Nix and Penix are very good prospects. Question marks? Sure. But lots to like about their game.
If the FO gives away the farm to get into the top three, I'll be supportive of the move. If they hold tight at 13, I'm fine with it too. There's good arguments for either course of action.

Swinging and missing on one draft pick is one thing, but swinging and missing costing the team several PREMIUM picks over the next couple of years is quite a different thing altogether.
Some people have said that SF done it (traded up and swung and missed) and they are fine. But the ONLY reason they are fine is that they hit the damn lottery and got their guy accidently in the 7th round. Imagine where they would be if they had not gotten ridiculously lucky. In most scenarios SF would have stayed with their first round pick waiting for him to develop or went out and got an expensive vet because they gave up the draft capital necessary to swing again. Think about that. If they go out to get an expensive vet, think about the talent they would have to let go or not go after in free agency and handicapped in the draft due to lost draft capital to address needs. Right now Purdy is not even making a million dollars allowing the team to hold onto talent and even further fortify the team in free agency. Imagine where SF would be if they did not hit on Purdy? Under almost any other scenario, their disaster of a move to move up to get a QB would have crippled their team. So please stop with the references to SF as a reason to swing for the fence and chances are we will be alright. The only reason SF did not suffer greatly was they accidently hit on that QB in the freaken 7th round. If the Raiders swing and miss, it will set this team back in a major way and those involved will be fired.

Whenever I sniff desperation, I get worried. At times it makes you see things that are not there and do things that are reckless. There is a difference between aggressiveness and reckless behavior. And given the hype every draft is accompanied with, it only muddies the waters further.
In football as it is in life, it is difficult to keep your wits about you as others are losing theirs.
Raiders need to stay focused and allow the scouting department to carefully evaluate these players. They must stay objective and critical and balanced and not allow hype or desperation or need to infect their observations.

The media will talk up how important an agent is to all players. IMO it isn't that important to a rookie but the media will talk about it anyway to suck up to agents - none of them want to alienate agents because agents are who are most commonly referred to as "NFL sources".

McCarthy's stock has risen since Harbaugh named him as the #1 QB of this draft. Post combines the picture will become clearer. I do see 6 or even 7 QBs being taken in the first round. Chicago, Washington, Patriots, Atlanta, Denver, Raiders, Saints. It’s so hard to say right now with the 2nd tier of QBs. Yes, whatever the Raiders do, I will definitely support the move and hope for the best. A player doesn't need an agent to negotiate a rookie deal. With the news rules rookie contracts there are strict parameters as to how much a player can get paid. Here is what first rounders made last season. As per the rules you cannot negotiate more money beyond the parameters and a team cannot negotiate to pay less.
