I understood your point. How do you figure the roster gets stacked in the first place? The Condor wrote Sat Jan 27, 2024 10:27 am:I agree and said as much . I was making a general point, not defending TT.
Maybe I need to simplify this; do you think it's easier for a mid-late round draft pick to make the team if;
1.) The roster is stacked and already has good depth.
Or
2.) There are holes throughout the roster, offering more opportunities to compete.
The answer is pretty fookin obvious.

I recently read an article about the Ravens draft room and you are correct as they always go BPA but the player must fit the "You are a Raven" profile. So obviously they have a subjective analysis of what it means to be a Raven.devilraid316 wrote Sat Jan 27, 2024 10:10 am:I've always been of the belief that if you can hit on 2 draft picks in a draft you did very well. And that goes for every team not just the Raiders. The Ravens always draft best player available, but that is subjective. Is it best player available for their system, the player they feel has the most upside? A need that happens to coincide with what is left to draft?
Whiffing on first round picks and hitting on later round picks is counterproductive. Because of the money and time invested on your first round picks, even with the rookie cap, you care still paying a lot of guaranteed money to whomever you draft in the first round as well as when you draft them in the first round.
And if you hit on the later round pick as opposed to the first round pick, you have to pay that later round pick sooner, where as you are already paying the first round pick and have the 5th year option available.
The Raiders draft history has not been good for a long time. It hasn't mattered who has pulled the trigger. A simplistic philosophy would go a long way to correcting that. Either make fewer selections by trading up OR make more selections by moving down. Personally I'd rather see them move up.
They seemed to have better success when they did that. Sure they had flops like Patrick Bates and Rickey Dudley when they moved up, especially seeing what else they could have selected. But they moved up and selected Darrell Russell and hit on him, it's a shame what happened to him, but the guy was flat out dominant when he was on the field.
It's kind of interesting to my knowledge the only time they have moved down in the first round was Gruden's first year of the return when they traded with Arizona and still selected Kolton Miller, who they likely were going to select at 10 instead of 15 when they got him. Standing pat has only really worked for them with Woodson and Mack in the first round, I guess you could throw in Nnamdi as well but they didn't get an instant return on him, it took him his entire rookie contract to show life.
Trading up to me signals a plan, as well as moving down does. Standing pat doesn't. I think you have to earn the right to stand pat. Standing pat to me goes with a history of good draft selections. Teams like the Steelers, Ravens, Packers typically stand pat. But they know what they are doing and what they are looking for and also don't appear to be in a rush to name that player a starter. They don't mind if he has to sit a few weeks or years like in the case of Love and A Rod with the Packers.

To all of those who worried that if we hired Harbaugh, he would want basically total power, it appears you may have been right. I was just reading where word is he's going to be taking the reigns in LA basically uncontested.Sold My Soul » Sat Jan 27, 2024 5:02 pm
Telesco eventually drafted Chargers QB Justin Herbert with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. That draft was flush with quarterbacks. Herbert was the third signal caller chosen, behind current NFL stars Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa.Sir Raider Duck, OMS » Sat Jan 27, 2024 5:39 pm
Exactly. We've been there and done that for two coaches in a row. Time for a different way.Rdrfn64 wrote Sat Jan 27, 2024 4:59 pm:To all of those who worried that if we hired Harbaugh, he would want basically total power, it appears you may have been right. Well, if I've already agreed that your depth comes from cheap vets and mid-late round draft picks, then I think it's also pretty obvious that your starters should come from higher draft choices with a sprinkling of astute trade / free agency acquisitions.miles_j20 wrote Sat Jan 27, 2024 12:09 pm:I understood your point. I was fully supportive of Champ Kelly getting the GM job, but I also recognize that the decision to hire Telesco may have been the right one for the team. Regardless, I feel bad for Champ Kelly getting passed over for the job again, and again it may have been due to a situation rather than a skillset. I hope the Raiders show their appreciation financially and professionally and hope he gets a chance in the next hiring cycle with another team. He made a facebook post after Telesco was hired and it demonstrates how, even though we depersonalize a lot of the team's moves, they are decisions that have lasting impact on people's lives.“God is fine with us being disappointed, but He doesn’t want us to lose Faith.”
I’ve lost a lot of games over the course of my playing and coaching career. I’ve lost a lot as a scout and executive as well. It’s okay – I have more wins in the columns than losses. I’ve missed shots, dropped the ball, missed the tackle, and didn’t get the job. They all sucked…LOL.
However, in every single instance, I got up. I kept going. I worked harder. I fought. I didn’t lose Faith. I don’t know much about my history or the origin of my people. But, I have come to believe that I’m from a tribe of RESILIENT and TOUGH people. I envision my folks working, providing, and loving. I envision my folks adapting and adjusting to whatever sick thing that life throws at them. I don’t envision them ever seeking credit because that is WHO they ARE. That is how I envision my ancestors and ultimately how I live my life. I don’t flinch!
Most people have heard some version of the Bible story of Peter walking on water. In short, Jesus was walking on water by Peter and the rest of the disciples. Peter called out to Jesus and said: “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” Most remember this story because as Peter walked toward Jesus on the water, he saw the wind and began to sink. People remember the FAILURE.
Today, I claim to have been a water walker. Where I’m from, folks don’t typically get the opportunity to sit at the head of an NFL team. I choose to view the last 9 weeks of the 2023/ 2024 season as a tremendous blessing. I was able to lead an NFL franchise in turmoil and work to unify and galvanize the team. I was able to communicate, love, and support our staff. I was able to assist a first-time head coach in day-to-day operation. I was able to communicate with a team president and team owner. I was able to empower the team. We were able to finish at 5 – 4 in my time in the seat! And, I was able to do all this while being authentically myself – who God intended and created me to be. I am blessed. My girls are blessed. He won’t allow me to sink!
I am disappointed the way things turned out today, but it won’t shake my Trust in the Lord. My faith muscle is strong. I am tremendously honored and humbled by all of the support, thoughts and prayers over the last few days. It has been a trying “wait” period, but your prayers lifted and encouraged myself and my family. For that, I love you.
