I really hope this new rule is something we are not talking about midseason and that in some way and by some miracle the umpires actually go about implementing this new rule in a fashion that is prudent.chucker » Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:09 am
There was some discussion about this being "officiated on Monday" to start. So it would start without officials not throwing flags on gameday, and the league sending warnings to players who commit the foul, with the handling of it graduating to gameday and potential for fines after the players have an opportunity to learn and adjust accordingly. I don't know if they have plans to take this more measured approach, but I hope so.signal wrote Mon Mar 25, 2024 8:20 am:I really hope this new rule is something we are not talking about midseason and that in some way and by some miracle the umpires actually go about implementing this new rule in a fashion that is prudent.
These types of tackles are not common, so, I am really hoping that we simply do not see this called much.....with the exception in those rare occasions when it does occur.
Call me naive but really hoping this becomes a nothing burger. That said, I would not be surprised if it turns into a shit sandwich.

YES! I was watching an old AFC title game, KC and the Pats on the NFL network and the officiating was a joke. They were simply getting calls wrong left and right and at pivotal moments in the game.chucker wrote Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:09 am:There was some discussion about this being "officiated on Monday" to start. IMO the league needs to do a ground up revamp of the officiating process before they should be adding anything like this. The technology available to improve officiating of games has advanced so far beyond the apparent willingness to adapt and improve. Before adding new rules, find a way to decrease the bad calls on existing rules.

NFL is headed for flag football.RickRyb » Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:32 am
For what it's worth, the rule is to prevent the SWIVEL hip drop tackle which I believe is when a defender grabs the ball carrier, straighten ups and then comes down on the legs while turning the ball carrier.chucker » Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:35 am
AP said this morning that there were 250 instances of it in games last year...... I don't know if the NFL has discussed the frequency of it, but I'd like to see their official stance on it - they have definitely done that analysis.RickRyb wrote Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:32 am:For what it's worth, the rule is to prevent the SWIVEL hip drop tackle which I believe is when a defender grabs the ball carrier, straighten ups and then comes down on the legs while turning the ball carrier.

Legalized gambling was the death knell of organized sports. On one hand they take all of this sponsorship money from the gambling outfits, and on the other make the rules even more ambiguous despite both the fans AND PLAYERS begging them to do otherwise. You can't be in bed with a business like that without striving to make the rules more simplified and common sense for even the average viewer. NBA was lost way before this but I really do think this is the end of NFL games being called even remotely well. Every game you're going to have to ask yourself if the part time Ref is in someone's pocket.RickRyb » Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:37 am
Which equates to one per game. Of the 250 or so there were 20-25 injuries. A much higher percentage than resulting from "other" tackles.chucker wrote Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:35 am:AP said this morning that there were 250 instances of it in games last year...... That stat surprises me. I actually thought it was far less than one a game. But then again, I don't watch games looking for that particular tackle to happen and have only noticed it on occasion.RickRyb wrote Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:37 am:Which equates to one per game. Yeah but they can all huddle together and pick up the flag if they think it was incorrect. I know because this happens alot to the Raiders when they initially get a flag going their way. Refs get in the huddle to discuss whether Kermit's check went threw.crowbar wrote Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:47 am:The call will not be subject to replay either.
If it's called...it's called.

I wouldn't call it a "stat", as the 250 number is just something AP said in his meeting with media, which was filled with lies as all coaches' media briefings are.signal wrote Mon Mar 25, 2024 11:50 am:That stat surprises me.
