Yeah those are all very good points. Certainly I could see both of those happening and not being mutually exclusive.Opoponax50 wrote Thu Mar 21, 2024 3:51 pm:Well said.
From what I've read, this type of tackle is documented cause approximately 25% more injuries than other types of tackles. So, okay, if that number can be lowered, then I'm for it. But as you noted, how are the refs going to be interpreting this? And on this thing in particular, is there an element of intent involved? It seems like a ball carrier could play a part in causing this "hip drop"* tackle to happen--and an intentional part at that.
Facemasking is pretty easy to call as is a horse-collar tackle. But this one? Yeesh.
*I still don't know WTF a hip drop tackle is.

The figure being cited is 25x, not 25%, but I have no idea how true that is. This new rule could be problematic, but we will see how it is enforced. I can't remember seeing a Raider player ever doing what constitutes a penalty by the letter of the rule. I'm sure it's happened, but it's not common.Opoponax50 wrote Thu Mar 21, 2024 3:51 pm:Well said.

The rugby video shows what it is more clearly. And we all know what pussies those rugby players are.heavyD » Fri Mar 22, 2024 7:41 am
I get that it's a dangerous tackle but it's not nearly as easy to define at speed compared to say a horse collar tackle. I am generally all for changes that reduce injuries but I do agree with the NFLPA that this could lead to a lot of confusion and at the end of the day and I don't trust NFL officiating enough to have a good and consistent handle on how they would call it as they still get roughing the passer wrong half the time.chucker » Fri Mar 22, 2024 7:46 am
That's my issue as well. Bad calls on personal fouls are so common already. I think every flag thrown on a personal foul should be subject to automatic review in the booth because too many should be overruled. I believe reviews on those are more important than reviews of catch - no catch calls because they're really bad at them.heavyD wrote Fri Mar 22, 2024 7:41 am:I get that it's a dangerous tackle but it's not nearly as easy to define at speed compared to say a horse collar tackle. Both Baseball and Football have been "pussyfied" in recent years.BoJacksonRules » Fri Mar 22, 2024 7:56 am
I don’t buy this is new type tackle BS. Anybody that has ever tried to tackle someone bigger than they are and you are about to get dragged for a ride, has put their weight on one of the opposing players legs to bring him down.RunOverByHubbard » Fri Mar 22, 2024 9:14 am
I think they are trying to be more specific than what you describe. But, yes, interpreting this is going to be a drag on the game.BoJacksonRules wrote Fri Mar 22, 2024 7:56 am:I don’t buy this is new type tackle BS. There is 100% a specific kind of tackle that quite honestly looks like the defender is trying to snap an ankle. the problem is that the actual hip drop is probably a minority compared to what could qualify as a hip drop. And with most of these kinds of calls; the goal posts usually shift away from “did you break the rule?” — to — “did you do enough to avoid breaking the rule?”RunOverByHubbard wrote Fri Mar 22, 2024 9:14 am:I think they are trying to be more specific than what you describe.
