I believe military commitments can be deferred for those going into professional sports until after their sports career is over. Nap McCallum actually played for the raiders while on active duty as he was stationed in Long Beach for a year. The Navy then transferred him and he served out his commitment, then he returned to playing for to the Raiders .devilraid316 wrote Sun Apr 28, 2024 5:16 pm:It's a rare thing for active military guys to even get drafted. It happens but, normally we aren't talking the Staubach's of the world. It was a different time when he was drafted, there was a war going on and still a draft for the military. IF it makes the Air Force look good, I would be willing to bet that they let him out of his commitment/contract with them, provided he isn't just a practice squad flier for the Raiders.
Meaning if he can actually get into games and fly that banner for them, it helps with recruiting for them and only makes them look that much better.
The partnership the NFL has with the military is another thing too. I think on the flip side if the Air Force stuck to their guns and forced him to stick around it hurts with recruitment. I don't see them making that mistake, contract or no.

Yes and I believe also if they pay for their schooling they're off the hook to serve.Trainnvain wrote Sun Apr 28, 2024 10:13 pm:I believe military commitments can be deferred for those going into professional sports until after their sports career is over.
