ChiefsBroncos"I like to have somebody who can go back and is able to make a tackle," [Dave] Toub (Chiefs ST Coach) explained Thursday. "(Harrison) Butker is able to make a tackle, but I really don't want him making tackles all year long. If you watch the XFL, we watched every play, I bet kickers were involved in at least 25 to 40 percent of the tackles. In either trying to make a guy bounce back or making the tackle himself, or just missing the tackle. We don't want Butker in that situation.
"Hang time doesn't matter at all now. Hang time is out the door," Toub said. … "Now, it's about accuracy. Seeing what you're getting, how the returners are lined up and trying to kick away from them in the corners. But you can't take too much risk because if you hit it out of bounds now you're giving up the ball at the 40. If you hit it short of the target zone you're giving the ball at the 40. So there's a fine line between pushing the limits and edges or just going down and saying we can cover."
Do we have anyone who can kick AND get down the field and make a tackle?Sean Payton says kickoffs are much more like an offensive play now after rule change
With the NFL adopting the XFL kickoff rules, Payton believes kickoffs will be more like an offensive play moving forward.
Broncos Assistant Head Coach Mike Westhoff who is a veteran special teams coach “reported” to OTA’s for the first time this spring and already had 15 ideas on this new kickoff rule.
“Yes. I think he used to use the analogy—there was a time where you had 18 or 19 plays that mattered in the kicking game, and then gradually that moved down to about 11 or 12. I think we’re going to be back [up to 18 or 19]. So look, if you coach a certain phase of the game, you want to coach plays that can affect the game; you don’t want to coach less. He had ‘X’ amount of time away. This week he reported. He sits in the front kitchen seat there waiting to talk. When I walked in, he had 15 ideas on this new kickoff. I think it’s going to be pretty important, and I think it’s going to be significant, especially in the first five weeks of this season.”
When asked about these ideas, Payton mentions where they need to kick the ball, the body types required for this play now, and the benefit of that 11th player not being a kicker.
Proper planning and execution on kick-offs and returns could be a game changer as everyone gets up to speed. We'll see how good and/or creative our ST coaches are.Payton later added that this new rule would change how they construct the 53-man roster and mentioned how he believes we could see offensive linemen on the field for this play next season.
“It does. It all gets back to can we get them to the game and how do we see them playing in the game? You’ll see, I think, offensive linemen in that protecting front line. That’s a group that’s hard to get—besides from field goal—it’s hard to get special teams reps. I think we’re starting with a bigger group, a bigger picture, and then working our way down rather than trying to guess and narrow who we think those candidates are.”

Lol I hope he's doing at least that.crowbar wrote Wed Jun 05, 2024 11:49 am:I remember hearing our ST coach saying that he is going to be watching others to get some ideas.
We all know that the NFL is copy cat league.

Tacklers will be more in a line rather than spread all over the field. Get thru the first wave, TD odds are good! Need a kick returner who's maybe a little heavier, good hands obviously, good speed, and can break tackles.Sold My Soul » Wed Jun 05, 2024 8:57 pm

I don't know a thing about the new rules other than I hate them!Opoponax50 » Wed Jun 05, 2024 10:19 pm
I'll hate it until I understand it a little, and then I'll have all kinds of bullshit to say.KillerRaider30 wrote Wed Jun 05, 2024 9:47 pm:I don't know a thing about the new rules other than I hate them!

That's why I'm avoiding it. Kick offs are officially going to be bong hit time.Opoponax50 wrote Wed Jun 05, 2024 10:19 pm:I'll hate it until I understand it a little, and then I'll have all kinds of bullshit to say.

Bowers seems like he'd be perfect for it, given his YAC ability even in traffic. And nobody in the league has an experience advantage in this format - it's wide open.Amish Cabal wrote Wed Jun 05, 2024 1:17 pm:Tacklers will be more in a line rather than spread all over the field. Brock Bowers come on down!
Sorry... I'm just really intrigued by this new KO situation!

It might be worth it to hire a ST coach or assistant from the XFL just for this. Could be the difference between scoring TDs or giving them up on kickoffs, especially at first.chucker wrote Thu Jun 06, 2024 5:30 am:Bowers seems like he'd be perfect for it, given his YAC ability even in traffic. ST Coach McMahon's presser...GUYDON » Thu Jun 06, 2024 10:58 am
It should be wild to watch. Tje ST coach seemed pretty excited about it, amd felt like a return guy could get a lot more opportunities to return.
