So you're thinking Peter King would make up a story about a personal encounter he had with Al Davis, thereby risking both a libel lawsuit against NBC Sports and the end of his career (a la Jayson Blair with The New York Times) , all for the sake of an anecdote about Al liking the WNBA?raider_kin wrote Sun Feb 02, 2025 12:38 pm:Tell me you really believe Al followed the WNBA that closely.
He would have been watching football, live or taped, college or pro.

Does it really matter now? Maybe he liked woman's basketball, but I doubt he would have invested much time in it, especially as he got toward the end.Sir Raider Duck, OMS wrote Mon Feb 03, 2025 7:03 am:So you're thinking Peter King would make up a story about a personal encounter he had with Al Davis, thereby risking both a libel lawsuit against NBC Sports and the end of his career (a la Jayson Blair with The New York Times) , all for the sake of an anecdote about Al liking the WNBA?
Or is it possible that maybe, just maybe, Al really did like the WNBA?

Thanks! The article wasn't quite like I remembered, but Al still was a WNBA fan.Ordos wrote Mon Feb 03, 2025 12:40 pm:Since I remember the same article..
"The day before the 2004 draft, Davis showed me his office, which had four big TVs in a diamond shape on the wall opposite his desk. “Basketball, women’s basketball, baseball,” he said. “All the sports.” He loved women’s basketball. He was fascinated with UConn, how everyone was shooting at the Huskies but couldn’t take them down with any regularity. Stupidly, I tried to test Davis, who was 74.
“Got a quiz for you,” I said. “Who took Diana Taurasi with the first pick of the WNBA Draft?”
He made a noise that sounded like Pfffffft. I’m sure Amy Trask and Bruce Allen and Jon Gruden heard it a hundred times. “Oh come on,” Davis said. “That’s easy. Phoenix.”

I think Z would have been a good GM, he was tied to the wrong horse.pfish57 wrote Sun Feb 02, 2025 8:24 pm:I'm pleased with the hires so far, but I remember posters clamoring for McDipshit & that GM...fuck & can't even remember his name lol, dude hasn't been seen or heard of since his stint with the Raiders lol so I will reserve Real judgement until I see some sort of progress in the win-loss column:)

Jeff Howe of The Athletic polled 10 NFL personnel executives and coaches on who the top head coaching hires were this offseason, with Raiders HC Pete Carroll finishing tied with Bears HC Ben Johnson for second-place votes. The Duke » Thu Feb 13, 2025 7:04 am
And that is the rub with bringing in a vet QB. With a roster like this, you'll get 6-8 wins and be in QB purgatory in terms of drafting one for the long haul. We have lived this reality already.Sold My Soul wrote Wed Feb 12, 2025 7:39 pm:Jeff Howe of The Athletic polled 10 NFL personnel executives and coaches on who the top head coaching hires were this offseason, with Raiders HC Pete Carroll finishing tied with Bears HC Ben Johnson for second-place votes.
One anonymous executive said the following on the situation in Las Vegas: “The roster is a ways away. (Carroll’s) energy, self-belief, and the ability to build culture is going to have an immediate impact on a place that hasn’t had it for a long time. The wins might not be there for a couple of years. It won’t be three or four wins (per season), but probably seven or eight because of what he brings. I’d imagine they get a veteran quarterback right away, but do they have the time to take off without needing to get the players in place?”

A franchise QB doesn't always have to be a top five pick. Mahomes was the 10th player taken, and Aaron Rodgers went in the 20's.The Duke wrote Thu Feb 13, 2025 7:04 am:And that is the rub with bringing in a vet QB. Kirk Cousins was a 4th round pick, TB was a 6th rounder, and Brock Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant. Scouting is important. Understanding how a talent fits with the team, on and off the field is important. Tons of guys with talent never made it to the 53 roster because they were drafted in the wrong spot to the wrong team with the wrong coach. I think Pete is good at evaluating how a guy can fit with his team and his coaching style. He snatched Wilson out of the 3rd round because no one wanted a short QB and we know what happened next.Bama_Raiders wrote Thu Feb 13, 2025 7:17 am:A franchise QB doesn't always have to be a top five pick. I don't recall many people here getting all hot and bothered over the McDaniels hire. Most of it was along the lines of hopeful but guarded. "Let's hope he's learned from his past fuckups, and really brings some good things here." But by the 4th or 5th game of his second season everyone had seen enough; even The Thumb.pfish57 wrote Sun Feb 02, 2025 8:24 pm:I'm pleased with the hires so far, but I remember posters clamoring for McDipshit & that GM...fuck & can't even remember his name lol, dude hasn't been seen or heard of since his stint with the Raiders lol so I will reserve Real judgement until I see some sort of progress in the win-loss column:)
