It's like throwing darts at a electronic dart board with the power cord disconnected and trying to score points.
Might as well end the drama now, in February 2021.
The Raiders selection in Round 1 of the 2021 draft will be:
Nobody. The pick will get traded and the Raiders will have no 1st round pick in 2021.
Which makes financial sense, since they've had extra 1st round picks the last 2 seasons. Bring in a vet... or get an extra 1st in 2022.
Have at it. This would really pissoff the mock drafters.
[Note: the Packers wasted a 1st last year on a QB who didn't play, instead of drafting a player who might have helped them beat the Bucs in the NFC Championship game. So, getting nothing from a 1st does NOT prevent you from making the playoffs.]
The more I consider who would be worth a 2021 1st... a tag and trade with the Bears for Allen Robinson is sounding pretty good right now. That would give us 3 stars to ride, just like Fat Andy has - Robinson, Waller and Jacobs.
An o-lineman, besides Incognito, and Mariota would have to go...
... You first have to know what safety other teams regard as a high to mid second rounder.
And them confirm he has a history of injury.
Fact: If they pick up all 5 of those 5th year options, that poses a salary cap issue.
Fact: Nobody can accurately rate this year's draft class because of COVID issues.
Fact: Raiders need a vet player to upgrade the roster and FA doesn't always provide the best vet player upgrades.
The salary cap future says trade out of the 1st in 2021.
The inaccuracy of the draft projections for the 1st round says trade out of the 1st in 2021.
If I was the Raiders GM, there'd be a 90% chance that I'd trade out of the 1st round completely in 2021.
There's your answer.
Call cap stressed teams.
Offer the 2021 1st for a vet starter
plus a draft pick in 2022
Make the argument that you need the 1st in 2021, we need the vet in 2021 and a pick in 2022.
Keep calling until draft day.
Somebody will break down and give us a good vet player. It's the NFL way.
After FA the draft targets will become clearer. If say, we sign a S in free agency it's highly unlikely we will draft one. Most teams draft for need. Most coaches have a very short reign and are under the gun to produce. That timeline is more or less 3 years depending on circumstances.
Even JG who has a "10 year contract" better not flop this year as it could spell the end of the 10 years in four years. So, first FA which IF possible we will sign defense heavy. As always, the IF is means if player(s) "X" wants to come here to begin with. After that we will/should have a clearer picture of who we are targeting with the first pick.
Hmmmmmmm... 2 d-linemen cut 2 weeks before draft....
must be going to take a d-lineman at #17, hey???
PS - and then they signed a back up CB...
must not be drafting a CB in the 1st round.
