On July 17, 1914, the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates were engaged in a marathon 21-inning game. Having scored two runs to break a 1-1 tie, the Giants took the field hoping to end the drawn-out affair. The skies were dark and threatening. Giants outfielder Red Murray camped under a fly ball that would finally end the game! But after making the catch, Murray was struck by a bolt of lightning which rendered him unconscious. (He apparently hung on to the ball.)

According to Yogi Berra, his teammate Ryne Duren "had several pairs of glasses but it didn't seem like he saw good in any of them." Those Coke-bottle lenses, coupled with a 100-mph fastball and "tactical" wildness, made Duren one of the most intimidating relievers of the late 1950s. His manager, Casey Stengel, once said of him, "Hitters don't like to see that fella. Especially family men." Duren would often enter a game by first squinting through his thick glasses, then throwing the ball well over the catcher's head to the backstop. There are even stories (possibly embellished) of Duren hitting not only hitters in the batter's box, but also those waiting in the on-deck circle! The most intimidating aspect of Duren's game was the fact that batters truly believed that Duren could not see, that he was just throwing into "an undifferentiated void." No wonder their knees were knocking together in fear!

On July 27, 1930 Reds pitcher Ken Ash was brought into a game against the Cubs with two on and no outs. He delivered one pitch which resulted in a triple play. Ash was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the inning, and the Reds staged a rally to win the game 6-5. Thus Ash entered the history books as the only man to win a MLB game with a single pitch.

Baseball was REALLY hard for me to watch during the pandemic. Hopefully people will be back in the stands soon. Still trying to decide what team to follow full time, Mariners got me in to Baseball, Dodgers are iconic and fairly local, and the Angels are local to me.
I can kind of take it or leave it. A good broadcast crew makes a big difference (really like Mariners broadcast).
The game has its moments, but for me the crowd, the broadcast and opponent have to be solid or the game loses a lot for me. Unlike pro football where I will watch any game anytime.

Agree about fans in the stands for Baseball. Pretty sure every team will have some fans to start the season. Even NY teams can have 20% attendance to start out....

Also glad they are back to 5 playoff teams. 3 division winners and the two WC teams playing one another. Then the 4 team play.....

Would have liked the DH in the NL though....

Thats why Football is so popular. Most Football fans will watch all the games. Baseball fans usually only watch their favorite teams....

Met Denny McLain back in the day at an event prior to a public signing. Just a small group of people and Denny was among them. Spent about an hour talking baseball with the guy, carefully avoiding his fall from grace. He was engaging and interesting and told some great stories. Seems he particularly liked pitching on big stages like Boston and NY. Then the guy went over to a refreshment table, grabbed a bottle of booze, took 3 big pulls straight from the bottle, slammed it down and said loudly, "let's do this thing" and stormed out to the table to the waiting fans. The other guys who were also at the signing laughed and followed Denny.

Greatness, even after falling from grace, is fun to watch in action.

Here in Omaha we have the gaycee Royals AAA.

Have to admit tho, it's fun going out every once and again to just hang out in the sun, watch a game, and load up on stadium food and drink.

Went to a company charity function some years back to watch the Tacoma Rainiers. Feliix Hernandez was down recovering from an injury. He threw a no hitter through 6 then gave up a single and they took him out. I had seen him before at Mariners stadium, but being that close gave you a whole other feel for his power.
Also, our tickets where $20 a piece with all you could eat hot dogs and beer (soda for kids) crazy good deal. Had a great time.
Congrats: 2  These Raider Fans gave GUYDON high fives (total 2):

Minor league BB is really affordable and yes, some crazy things do happen.

Plus the promotions are amazing like GUYDON pointed out.

eh, baseball is the one sport where money does dictate. I am fortunate that the team I follow has long money so I will enjoy more winning seasons than losing seasons. There is only about 10 teams that have that kind of money despite the salary cap. there will be lower dollar teams that surge every so often but until baseball puts a floor and a ceiling on spending, this is the reality.

I do like the stove pipe hats your team used to wear and break out every so often. Honus Wagner and Roberto Clemente is a pretty good legacy to hang a hat on.
