Back in the day I remember an article that came out that stated Barney Miller was deemed the most realistic detective show on TV.

Wow....thanks
most think of Peter Falk as Columbo or the grandfather in the Princess Bride. His movie career was astoundingly good and he was a fantastic character actor. Really one of the first big names to embrace TV as a medium that was here to stay.

Your comment about embracing television reminds me of a section from David Niven's autobiography where he was a partner in a tv company in the 50s having recognised that was the future.
The book, The Moon's a Balloon and his follow up about tales from the golden age of Hollywood, Bring on the Empty Horses, are great reads. The former is one of the few books that have made me laugh out loud when reading it.

few admired David Niven like I did. I know many think of him as the guy in Around the World in 80 Days or the Pink Panther movies but he was really quite the accomplished as a writer and a bit of a badass during WWII

loved his style but his intelligence was off the charts.

I went a different direction, I selected shows that had the most impact, not what I judged as the best

a quick explanation of my picks
Kotter over Days: Introduced Travolta to the world, and his impact in movies is huge
Hill over Kings, really no explanation needed, huge impact from HSB
Vice over SNG, Vice created a whole fashion look, SNG broke no real ground in ST universe
DVD over Columbo, DVD was a fore runner to most of the family format shows
Carol over Taxi, took sketch comedy to whole new levels, intro had not been done before
Bonanza over X files, X Files was just a TV version of Close Encounters, Bonanza was huge
Dragnet over Friends, Dragnet's cop show format is still used today, huge impact
Rockford Files over Miller, this was close, so I used a tie breaker of star power of Garner (big time raider fan)
Magnum PI over Cheers, another close one, Cheers started well, got really unrealistic
Family vs Color, both impactful, but Archie in the end was just too huge
Improvement vs Fresh, Fresh took a format and threw a huge curve ball that changed TV
Children vs S&A, this one is easy, Children save Fox
Lucy vs Andy, Desilu studios won out here, first woman to run a successful studio
Seinfeld vs 70's, Seinfeld was watercooler stuff, 70's gave us Red (loved Red, but come on)
Trek vs Mash, another close one, but Gene really saw the future, we use stuff from Trek daily
TZ vs Kung Fu, this was hugely close, but Kung Fu became thousands of MA studios
Congrats: 1  These Raider Fans gave Attyla a high five:

I did not go for what was "important", I just chose what I liked. Alfalfa got just one wrong - Simon and Simon was good at the time, but Married with Children is classic.

yea, I was gonna go that route but figured everyone would. I guess like a lot of my generation, I see those shows as a microcosm of the world as I saw it at that time. as such, I wanted to pick the show that had a significance historically for that particular time. If I were going soley on my tastes, I would have mentioned Quark as a show in the 70's, which I found astoundingly fun. But for the period, is a blip on the radar. My personal taste in TV can be a bit obscure.

 I had to make at least one choice different than Chucker. Married with Children took the hit. LOL. While I think Ed O'Neill is an awesome actor, I wasn't a big fan of this show, classic or not.
