It wasn't my intention to come off so harshly. I work in college athletics so I am a bit passionate about the discussion.grosse gurke wrote Tue Jul 24, 2018 3:12 pm:LOL....jesus....
OK...I dont have enough information...nor do I have the expertise.... to create a defined compensation system for college sports...however...putting a portion of the $ they bring in to the university (less the cost of the scholarship)...into a deferred payment plan for the athletes once they leave school...doesnt seem unreasonable to me.

I can say this only a certain amount of schools make money off football and basketball.
The Olympic sports generate nothing.
I understand where your sentiment is coming from but very few players/programs make money. And don't forget about Title IX which has nearly killed some men's sports and it is a bugger for cost of attendance. Whatever you are giving a male athlete, you have to give a female athlete.
No school is going to pay the tennis player deferred money because the tennis player and the tennis program is a financial black hole.

They already have a defined compensation system for college athletes. It is a pretty sweet deal. Most high school athletes are fighting to get a piece of the pie.grosse gurke wrote Tue Jul 24, 2018 3:12 pm:LOL....jesus....

Aren't colleges not for profit? If so, they can't legally make money. The money gets spent. I would rather shut down college athletics than raise tuition to pay athletes.grosse gurke wrote Tue Jul 24, 2018 1:17 pm:^ Im was just tossing out numbers. However I could see a tiered system where the student athlete is paid not only based on the size of the school, the sport they play, and whether they actually play or not. You would not pay a volleyball player the same as a starting football player. There would need to be some way to pay them based on how much they actually add to the college coffers.
Obviously not all colleges are the same....but if you look at Texas....the football team brings in over $100 million a year.....divided by 105 players that is damn near $1m per player in revenue.

They already get a large piece of the pie.Atlasffa wrote Tue Jul 24, 2018 3:58 pm:A system could be figured out. The current system was put in place over a hundred years ago. NCAA (non-profit org) is currently profiting in amounts never dreamed of by the founders. Times have changed. Athletes give more time to the athletic programs and have greater risk of injury due to the higher level of play. Time to figure out how to give them a small piece of the pie.

Not for profit means there are no owners....so any profit there is doesnt get distributed to the owners...it gets reinvested or placed into reserves. So legally...they can make as much money as their board of directors wants...it just doesnt get paid out at the end of year.mad stork 83 wrote Tue Jul 24, 2018 7:28 pm:Aren't colleges not for profit? Most are state run institutions, and all money made is put back into programs or salaries for employees of the University...mad stork 83 wrote Tue Jul 24, 2018 7:28 pm:Aren't colleges not for profit? Some major programs make millions for their collective University Athletic Departments and all share in those earnings, and you are correct Title IX, ruined many programs for several colleges.CarrKnight wrote Tue Jul 24, 2018 4:44 pm:It wasn't my intention to come off so harshly. So they don't make a profit. All of their revenue gets put into the running the university. So if college athletes start getting even more compensation, that would be money that is either charged to other students to not spent on other expendatures.grosse gurke wrote Wed Jul 25, 2018 7:32 am:Not for profit means there are no owners....so any profit there is doesnt get distributed to the owners...it gets reinvested or placed into reserves. you don't even need to pay the players. Just let them make money using their likeness and name. Insane that a kid in college can't do fn commercials. Even the old amateur olympics allowed you to make money by other means. It's all a farce imo.
