This is the court case that got the college video games taken off the shelves. It is also the case that gave athletes more stipend money. O'Bannon is still fighting the good fight for athletes.

OK...I dont have enough information...nor do I have the expertise.... to create a defined compensation system for college sports...however...putting a portion of the $ they bring in to the university (less the cost of the scholarship)...into a deferred payment plan for the athletes once they leave school...doesnt seem unreasonable to me.
It wasn't my intention to come off so harshly. I work in college athletics so I am a bit passionate about the discussion.

I can say this only a certain amount of schools make money off football and basketball.
The Olympic sports generate nothing.

I understand where your sentiment is coming from but very few players/programs make money. And don't forget about Title IX which has nearly killed some men's sports and it is a bugger for cost of attendance. Whatever you are giving a male athlete, you have to give a female athlete.

No school is going to pay the tennis player deferred money because the tennis player and the tennis program is a financial black hole.

Not so fast on blaming the ladies...

Here's a link to an article from Forbes titled Did Growth Of Women's College Sports Cost Men? Data Says No by David Berri, written on Jan 16, 2018.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidberri ... a803ab297a

Excerpt:
But again, the academic literature indicates that most schools are not in compliance and the pattern of cuts isn't consistent with the "blame Title IX" story. So next time someone argues that the expansion of women's sports after Title IX hurt men's sports … well, remember that although people might tell this story, the data reported in the academic literature seems to be saying something very different.

It is not women's sports that is preventing athletes from getting a little bit of the money that is generated by the high revenue sports.

They already have a defined compensation system for college athletes. It is a pretty sweet deal. Most high school athletes are fighting to get a piece of the pie.

However I could see a tiered system where the student athlete is paid not only based on the size of the school, the sport they play, and whether they actually play or not. You would not pay a volleyball player the same as a starting football player. There would need to be some way to pay them based on how much they actually add to the college coffers.
Obviously not all colleges are the same....but if you look at Texas....the football team brings in over $100 million a year.....divided by 105 players that is damn near $1m per player in revenue.
Aren't colleges not for profit? If so, they can't legally make money. The money gets spent. I would rather shut down college athletics than raise tuition to pay athletes.

NCAA (non-profit org) is currently profiting in amounts never dreamed of by the founders. Times have changed. Athletes give more time to the athletic programs and have greater risk of injury due to the higher level of play. Time to figure out how to give them a small piece of the pie.
They already get a large piece of the pie.

Not for profit means there are no owners....so any profit there is doesnt get distributed to the owners...it gets reinvested or placed into reserves. So legally...they can make as much money as their board of directors wants...it just doesnt get paid out at the end of year.

Most are state run institutions, and all money made is put back into programs or salaries for employees of the University...

Some major programs make millions for their collective University Athletic Departments and all share in those earnings, and you are correct Title IX, ruined many programs for several colleges.

So they don't make a profit. All of their revenue gets put into the running the university. So if college athletes start getting even more compensation, that would be money that is either charged to other students to not spent on other expendatures.

you don't even need to pay the players. Just let them make money using their likeness and name. Insane that a kid in college can't do fn commercials. Even the old amateur olympics allowed you to make money by other means. It's all a farce imo.

It's insane that everyone can make money off college football except the guys risking their bodies for it

Also colleges no longer even put money back into university. They use it to give huge bonuses to morons who do nothing.
