I just happen to believe that they have to prove themselves beyond that to move up in the league - because they are getting hired and promoted by guys whose jobs are on the line year after year.
I've worked around guys who were the smartest guys in the room at their own family's business. Nepotism got them in, competence and giving a shit made them good at their jobs.

Nepotism theories take a hit as the Raiders let go of three scouts including Zack Crockett and Glenn Schembechler.Sir Raider Duck, OMS » Tue Feb 07, 2023 7:38 am
Did Scott Turner's last name get him in the NFL door? Of course it did.Sir Raider Duck, OMS » Tue Feb 07, 2023 7:44 am
I still remember Raiders beat writer Steve Corkran's years-long freakout when Reggie fired four of Al's longtime scouts. Cork ended up literally destroying his career over it: When the four scouts sued the Raiders for Age Discrimination, Cork testified as an expert witness on their behalf, saying Reggie was an incompetent GM and there was no good reason to fire any of the scouts.chucker wrote Tue Feb 07, 2023 7:24 am:Nepotism theories take a hit as the Raiders let go of three scouts including Zack Crockett and Glenn Schembechler.

This is six degrees of Kevin Bacon level conspiracy theory stuff. Do you work for Newsmax?NoClapsPlease wrote Mon Feb 06, 2023 11:48 am:Norv turner had a hand in convincing the patriots to sign cam newton. So to say the connection isn’t there, just isn’t true.
He got the job bc of his daddy.

I agree with your post..just wanted to say I think Rex is a good coach. He makes good money as an analyst, but if he said “I’m willing to be a DC” many teams would call.Sir Raider Duck, OMS wrote Tue Feb 07, 2023 7:38 am:Did Scott Turner's last name get him in the NFL door? Of course it did.
Does his last name ensure his continued NFL employment if he's no good as a coach? Of course not. David Shula, Rex Ryan, and others can attest to that.
If we're bringing him in, it's because McD thinks he has something to offer.

My understanding is that while his playcalling has been "extremely mediocre to below average," he's been a very good or excellent QB tutor for several teams. See also Greg Olson and Bill Musgrave, who are excellent QB tutors but mediocre-at-best playcallers. They keep getting jobs not due to nepotism, but because they can coach QBs well.NoClapsPlease wrote Tue Feb 07, 2023 9:36 am:It really isn’t.
I can’t believe people are pretending nepotism hasn’t played a part in this guy being extremely mediocre to below average at his job for over a decade.

Yes, if he were hired as an OC, I would be worried. But he is not. He is hired as someone that will work on the passing game and work with the QBs. He has done quite well doing that. Given his history that appears to be the job he is best suited. And the Raiders signed him exactly for that job.Sir Raider Duck, OMS wrote Tue Feb 07, 2023 10:38 am:My understanding is that while his playcalling has been "extremely mediocre to below average," he's been a very good or excellent QB tutor for several teams. Nepotism: the practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives, friends, or associates, especially by giving them jobs.NoClapsPlease wrote Tue Feb 07, 2023 9:36 am:It really isn’t.

Cork was barred from the Raiders facility shortly thereafter, and his termination from BANG followed just as quickly. He then started a couple of Raiders newsletters that almost nobody read and no longer exist. I don't know what he does for a living now.
Moral of the Story: Don't ruin your career over a fight that's not yours.
PS: The scouts lost the suit. The court found that they had indeed been fired for no good reason, but also found that scouts and coaches are fired in the NFL all the time for no good reason, and therefore Age Discrimination had not been demonstrated.

Was Gruden's son nepotism?Attyla wrote Tue Feb 07, 2023 12:27 pm:Nepotism: the practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives, friends, or associates, especially by giving them jobs.
Norv has no power or influence with the Raiders. Hence, Scott did not get the job due to nepotism. If Norv worked for the Raiders in a position of power and either hired his son or had others hire his son, it MIGHT be nepotism, but even then it would not be a situation where it WAS nepotism. But Norv does not have such a job so Scott's hiring does not fall under nepotism.

I think his last name could have been Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff Sr. and Josh would have signed him.
