The article uses a lot of made-up statistics such as "Game-Deciding 3rd/4th-Down 4th Quarter Penalties", "Penalty-Forced Game Losses" and "Game-Deciding Plays," which usually means it's someone's personal opinion what is and is not "Game-Deciding" or which losses are "Penalty-Forced." The great thing about these kind of statistics is they can be massaged into anything you want. Politicians in Washington are especially good at this, which is why you end up with the Republican and Democratic candidates for an office each giving out credible-looking charts showing THEIR party is responsible for economic growth and the other party is responsible for each recession.BigJerk wrote Fri May 26, 2023 11:09 am:Did you read the article?
Did you see the chart on the disparity of Drive Sustaining or Drive Killing penalties that tend to go against us??

I can make a case that we have drafted some of the most stupid players during this span, and much of it is self inflicted.Since 2000, the Las Vegas Raiders have been charged with the most penalties by a team, with 2,850 penalties.

I’d say there’s a bit of truth to both sides of the argument, but this still rings true:haji81872 » Fri May 26, 2023 7:23 pm
They are not made up, there is a very precise method used to come up with the results.Sir Raider Duck, OMS wrote Fri May 26, 2023 11:18 am:The article uses a lot of made-up statistics such as "Game-Deciding 3rd/4th-Down 4th Quarter Penalties", "Penalty-Forced Game Losses" and "Game-Deciding Plays," which usually means it's someone's personal opinion what is and is not "Game-Deciding" or which losses are "Penalty-Forced." I'd have to deep-dive into these statistics to see if they are reliable or not, and I frankly have better things to do with my time, especially when there is literally nothing I can do about any of this.

Might as well dust this one off as long as we are being nostalgic.16 to 88 » Fri May 26, 2023 10:49 pm
I would argue just the opposite if you are referring to the ethical skeptic article. It's very detailed and spot on but I have to wonder myself why the author didn't take this in a couple of other directions. I have posted the below statistics time and again on this forum but it certainly bears repeating.Sir Raider Duck, OMS wrote Fri May 26, 2023 11:18 am:The article uses a lot of made-up statistics such as "Game-Deciding 3rd/4th-Down 4th Quarter Penalties", "Penalty-Forced Game Losses" and "Game-Deciding Plays," which usually means it's someone's personal opinion what is and is not "Game-Deciding" or which losses are "Penalty-Forced." In 63 seasons we have been the #1 most penalized team in the league 15 times. That's 24% of the time.
8 times we have been the 2nd most penalized team.
6 times we have been the 3rd most penalized team.
When you add it up 29 times out of 63 seasons we have been in the top 3 in penalties. For a whopping... 46% of the time!!!
We have spent nearly HALF of our seasons in the top 3 in penalties.
To continue...
8 times we have been the 4th most penalized team in the league.
3 times we have been the 5th most penalized team in the league.
When you add all this up, 40 seasons out of 63 we have been in the top 5 in penalties. For the unbelievable amount of... 63%!!!
63% of the time we have played being penalized in the top 5 in all of football. 63%!!!
But wait! There's more! Unfortunately...
6th zero times
7th 5 times
8th zero times
9th 4 times
10th 2 times
When you add this all together we have been in the top 10 in penalties from when we entered the league 51 times out of 63 seasons. Or, to reverse engineer... ONLY 12 times, 12 measly times out of our 63 seasons did we spend playing out of the top 10. Let that sink in for a moment. Only 12 times have we ever been out of the top 10.
When you do the math on that we have been in the top 10 in penalties 81% of the time.
Again, only 12 times have we ever been out of the top 10. That's it. Then there is the matter of numerous former players and coaches telling us of the officiating bias. What? Are they all lying?! lol. McDaniels stated just last year alone regarding this matter for the umpteenth time "what can I say we are the Raiders.
He can't come out and say there is an OBVIOUS bias that has been going on for 60+ years. And what makes this even more damning is, this is his first year as an HC for us! Ipso facto he knew all about the bias officiating towards us the entire time he has been in the league. He's not stupid. Then a short while later our owner in an interview named the officiating as 1 of the 3 things he looks at during the game! Mark is telling everyone without coming out and directly saying it. As if we couldn't see already?

I understand before the snap flags, but holding when there's holding every play and judgement calls is how you control games. And that's what has hurt the Raiders the most!raiders93 » Thu Jun 01, 2023 1:11 pm
The big thing I think the ethical skeptic does a good job articulating: timing is everything when it comes to penalties.Raider727 wrote Wed May 31, 2023 11:04 pm:I understand before the snap flags, but holding when there's holding every play and judgement calls is how you control games. I watch the top teams play and they get to hold and judgement calls always go their way. I'm tired of blaming the refs, but even when the Raiders have a poor roster and are playing well the refs fuck us some how, some way.
I understand having bad players, bad coaching, stupid plays etc... But there's a thing that exists that is called bad calls by the refs. Refs fuck up all the time in all sports, they're human and aren't perfect.
But being the most penalized team of all time can't be a coincidence, something has to be up. Unfortunately we will never know and that's the truth.
