There are some good guards we can get in rds 2-4 that would be day 1 starters for us. No reason for us not to come out of the draft with 2 of them. Hopefully, we sign our CB before the draft so we have a little flexibility (and are not in panic mode).Jeevo wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 8:49 am:Part of TT’s calculation may be that several depth type guys on the O line become available after a draft that is deep in them. Draft 2 and sign 2, is that enough?

We signed Van Roten after the draft last year. Most people didn't think much of it at the time, and then he started and played decent.Jeevo wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 8:49 am:Part of TT’s calculation may be that several depth type guys on the O line become available after a draft that is deep in them. True, so many variables. As TT has pointed out a few times now every team will have a different view/board where they see guys. And even if you like a certain G let's say, and he is there for the taking, although you like his play he may not fit your scheme.

Rumor has it that you can become all-pro by hitting trees.signal wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 6:49 am:Good to see that others have a weird sense of humor. It is a long offseason and it was a silly attempt to bring some levity to the discussion.

Just a reminder, that the first thing to come out of Telesco's mouth in an interview was the OL. Very first thing he pointed out and specifically the run blocking. I was confident that we would sign at least a G in FA but we actually lost players and haven't added anybody. $? Wouldn't surprise me in the least that OL is addressed with the first pick in the draft as well as later on. Thing is, being this is the silly season, how do they view guys like Munford?signal » Sat Mar 30, 2024 9:41 am
LOL! Yep, it be all about the trees in the offseason.chucker wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 9:27 am:Rumor has it that you can become all-pro by hitting trees.

Mumford is an interesting piece and one that could really improve next season. But I would not count on it and second, there really is not a lot of depth there as well.16 to 88 wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 9:27 am:Just a reminder, that the first thing to come out of Telesco's mouth in an interview was the OL. My guess is that the Raiders were interested in signing a quality guard to man the RG spot for years, but the market for a good, not great, guard in FA was insane. Robert Hunt at a true $20 million a year is just crazy - it makes the amount we paid for Wilkins seem pretty reasonable IMO. So my guess is that we've pivoted and are after a different plan, but still intend to improve the oline. Personally I would have been all over signing Zeitler for a year even though he's old and isn't a long term solution.signal wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 9:46 am:Mumford is an interesting piece and one that could really improve next season. TT needs to find several pieces along the OL to not only fill out the starter roles but to add some good depth so as to not only inspire some fiery competition in camp but also to have the damn depth needed in case a guy or two go down.
Imagine if he addresses it in a similar fashion as he addressed the DL. Would love to go into next season knowing that the trenches were built to dominate in 2024.

If you look at the Mock Drafts and Big Board lists from various sources, it is clear that OT is, after QB, the strongest position in this draft. Could there be an OT that we draft and move inside to guard if they trust Mumford? Or, trade down just a few spots and get one of those top OTs and use the extra pick for another O-lineman? If they don't draft an OT or a CB, I will be surprised, as CB is the other strong position in the top half of the first round.devilraid316 » Sat Mar 30, 2024 2:01 pm
For me personally, I believe you draft OT and C, never G. The guys who fail at C or T, you can kick inside to play guard. If the guy fails as a guard there is nowhere to put him. I always go back to that draft that the Titans took Chance Warmack 3rd and the Cardinals took Cooper as reference. 2 guards drafted in the top ten, and both were massive busts. There was nowhere for them to play after failing.Jeevo » Sat Mar 30, 2024 4:23 pm
There are at least a few well rated tackles that are being projected as guards in the NFL. Bigger guys that have the quickness for outside in college but may not have enough for the pros.devilraid316 wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 2:01 pm:For me personally, I believe you draft OT and C, never G. It's why I think Becton is an interesting option for the Raiders on the free agent front. He has failed as a tackle, but has never been tried out at guard, a position I think he would excel at.
The thing I think that people are overlooking is, naturally the Raiders would like to get one of these quarterbacks. But IDK how many more needs they are going to turn to the draft to fill. I would NOT be surprised to see the Raiders take one of the DT's in this draft with one of their first picks. Jenkins and Butler only signed one year deals and are 30 and over. Wilkins isn't much younger than them.
It protects their investment in Wilkins and Crosby, plus their first round pick investment in Tyree Wilson last year. Getting pressure from the front 4 is paramount for success. Now granted that is if they really like one of these DT's. I think them drafting a DT early is more in the cards than any other position except for quarterback.

I'd like something better than Van Roten this year, and we have the cap space to afford it.chucker wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 9:08 am:We signed Van Roten after the draft last year. Most people didn't think much of it at the time, and then he started and played decent.
We might also find ourselves in a situation where we can trade for an offensive lineman after another team drafts a guard or tackle and wants to save cap space by moving on from a good but more expensive vet under contract.
