Then WHY haven't we re-signed him?chucker wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 9:08 am:We signed Van Roten after the draft last year. Most people didn't think much of it at the time, and then he started and played decent.
We might also find ourselves in a situation where we can trade for an offensive lineman after another team drafts a guard or tackle and wants to save cap space by moving on from a good but more expensive vet under contract.

If we concede that Van Roten played decently, and especially since he's watched middling guards cash in this offseason, why would he want to sign for Vet min without the need of urgency?BigJerk wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 7:00 pm:Then WHY haven't we re-signed him?
Vet min seems like a Really cheap insurance policy.

All the talk of trading up or down...Marzan » Sun Mar 31, 2024 1:05 am
You make some very good points. But we rarely have people wanting us to trade up and be aggressive in the draft. It’s only this year where our glaring need at QB has some being vocal about (and I’m not sure they’re a majority).Hellbound wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 6:06 am:It's the same with people in the trade up camp. Think rationally and if you had a top 5 pick and the supposed great qb class this year with a need at qb, why would you trade out of it? Better yet, a blue chip prospect that probably would've went #1 any other year might fall into your lap at 4 or 5. Why would a team drop out of that position for a few picks?
The solution to that is throw 3-4 first rounders and other picks at them. Why in the world would you do that? Ok you get a qb on a rookie deal which is ideally what you want. The problem is you've given away a bunch of picks to build something around him and have to overpay to sign free agents. You're cap is going to get wonky after a couple years putting you in a situation that you're either going to continue to kick the can or cut those now expensive contracts. Then by that time your qb is going to need to extended so you're back to square one

Thank you. It's this year specifically combined with us not having a franchise QB in half a century, combined with a new head coach and new GM. I've always said the stars have seemed to align for THIS year to get our guy.Marzan wrote Sun Mar 31, 2024 1:05 am:You make some very good points. Whereas every single year since I’ve been here (and in RF net before) every other post in the mock drafts thread has us trading down time and time again. The volume of those two is simply not comparable.

We have had 3 franchise QBs in the last half century. We have also swung for the fences and tried twice to get one and failed miserably both times. I know where you are going with your comments, but we do need to be accurate. Stabler, Plunkett and Gannon all were on the team in the last 50 years. Marinovich and Russell were both drafted in the first round in an attempt to get a franchise QB.BoKnows81 wrote Sun Mar 31, 2024 3:46 am:Thank you. Like many, I have thought about this draft's many scenarios and while coming up with anything meaningful to say is like herding cats outside at night, I have come to really like the idea of moving down in this draft.BoKnows81 » Sun Mar 31, 2024 6:11 am
Listen, I'm not against trading down if the situation presents itself either. The problem is I think we absolutely need to go QB and there is a real possibility that all 6 QBs go before the Raiders pick. If that happens and the Raiders don't love any of those QBs, I wouldn't mind trading down if the QBs are gone, but it takes 2 to tango.signal wrote Sun Mar 31, 2024 5:58 am:Like many, I have thought about this draft's many scenarios and while coming up with anything meaningful to say is like herding cats outside at night, I have come to really like the idea of moving down in this draft.
Yes, moving down only works if there is someone who wants to move up, but given that there may be a run at the QB position early, it means that some blue chip players may fall and it means a team or two might be really interested in moving into the #13 spot when the Raiders pick.
Now, the Raiders could pick best player available at #13 and that is never a bad option but they might actually be able to gain a 2nd and possibly a 3rd if they move down - if the right player drops in their lap and one that another team really covets. Several others on the forum have pointed to this as an option and the idea has really grown on me.
I think if the Raiders do have 5 picks in the first three rounds that would go a long way to giving this team the influx of talent it needs. And has been said, the more swings you have the more chance you have at hitting.
I have also read that some think the Raiders must move up in order to get even one of the top 6 QBs in this draft. If that sort of scenario plays out, I really hope the Raiders don't get caught up in the fray over reaching out of desperation. I would sit back and let them reach and stay pat and yes, even take advantage of it by possibly trading down. When the dust settles a year or two from now, I highly suspect that some of those teams caught up in the frenzy will be really missing PREMIUM picks they could still have in next year's draft or for that matter the one following it.
On a side note, next year, there simply will not be that many teams wanting to go QB in the first, because they went all in this year. Some will be without picks in the draft because they used their PREMIUM picks in this year's draft to move up and others will be happy with what they got this year and others will not be but will have to ride with said player for at least a year or two till they know for certain they screwed the pooch. So, patience might prove beneficial.
Note: I do think the Raiders need to go QB, just don't think they need to sell the farm to find one and handicap their options for the next two years. No, I think they could get one and at the same time fortify this team with young talent by moving down. That said, staying at #13 and grabbing the best damn player on the board is not a bad thing either.

I would be shocked if 6 QBs were gone before we pick. My assumption is that 4 go in the first 6, and I think there's value in moving up to make sure we get our pick of the next two - even if we believe "our guy" is still going to be there.signal » Sun Mar 31, 2024 7:07 am
Yes, the Raiders definitely should go QB in this draft, but I want them to be able to QB in next year's draft if they want.chucker wrote Sun Mar 31, 2024 6:43 am:I would be shocked if 6 QBs were gone before we pick. I do want a QB in this draft. Every one of them has supporters and detractors, so there aren't any easy answers IMO.

I think he has a flexible plan, simply because you never know what others are going to do. I am not sure you put out feelers at this time simply because you do not want to tip your hand too soon and as a result allow other teams to know how to outbid you if they want. And of course the draft itself dictates many things both during and after. Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face. We need to be prepared to respond to the unexpected.RickRyb wrote Sun Mar 31, 2024 9:57 am:For what little it's worth. I believe . . .
- Telesco has a specific plan, for both the draft and the remainder of free agency, and AP is on-board.
- ANY trade(s) The Raiders make will be on draft day. They have had feelers out and know their options.
- Everything will now depend on how the draft flows.
