per Charlie Campbell https://walterfootball.com/nfl-hot-pres ... aiders.phpIn the month of April, there has been a lot of buzz about the Las Vegas Raiders targeting Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the 2024 NFL Draft. With new general manager Tom Telesco and head coach Antonio Pierce taking over, Las Vegas could start its re-build with a new franchise quarterback after a disastrous run by former head coach Josh McDaniels. Multiple team sources told WalterFootball.com that Penix is definitely in the running to be taken by the Raiders early in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Sources said Penix could be in play for Las Vegas with its first-round pick, No. 13 overall. However, the Raiders could also take a non-quarterback in the first round and look to move up from their second-round pick for Penix. Las Vegas has needs at cornerback and offensive tackle, so the franchise could look to select a player at one of those positions and then move back up for Penix. The Raiders like a lot of the offensive linemen who could be available at No. 13. That group includes Alabama right tackle J.C. Latham, Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu, Oregon State right tackle Taliese Fuaga and Washington offensive tackle Troy Fautanu. Las Vegas also really likes Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell. Right now, it sounds as if the more likely plan is to acquire Penix rather than taking Mitchell or one of those tackles at with the 13th choice of the 2024 NFL Draft.
However, plans are being held very close to the vest with the Raiders, and the only people who will truly know the pick are Telesco, Pierce, and owner Mark Davis. When Telesco was general manager of the Chargers, he was notorious for not speaking with his scouts and keeping them removed from the organization. That being said, the Raiders know that in a division with the Chiefs’ Pat Mahomes and the Chargers’ Justin Herbert they are going to need a quarterback who is capable of putting up big point totals. Penix did that in Washington and has deep-ball talent with big-play ability that is said to intrigue Pierce in particular. Last season, Penix hadsome games late in the year where he showed shaky accuracy and inconsistency, but Herbert also turned in some underwhelming tapes in his final college season at Oregon and Telesco was unfazed to make Herbert a top-10 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Gardner Minshew II and Aidan O’Connell are in-house for the Raiders to let a rookie develop, but Minshew and O’Connell are not viewed as the long-term franchise quarterbacks.
Thus, sources said that Penix is definitely in play for the Raiders. Las Vegas could consider him in the first round, but moving up from the team’s second-round pick for Penix is also a consideration. However, those thoughts could end up being killed by Davis, Telesco and Pierce. In my latest 2024 NFL Mock Draft, I have the Raiders turning in their card for Penix.

If they actually knew what we were doing, I'd be really disappointed in Telesco and co. I don't post much of this stuff, but he had a pretty good writeup and Campbell tends to be one of the more accurate mock drafters - but none of them are that accurate.GUYDON wrote Wed Apr 17, 2024 1:53 pm:So Walter football says the Raiders could take a QB at 13 or they could take another player
Fantastic reporting going on in 2024. Lol

Penix wouldn't beat out AOC.Attyla » Wed Apr 17, 2024 2:44 pm
Actually he probably would. The first thing a new GM and HC do is find their QB. If they target Penix, he is going to get every chance to be what they want him to be, their guy.KillerRaider30 wrote Wed Apr 17, 2024 2:39 pm:Penix wouldn't beat out AOC.

I agree TT and AP would start him. I'm saying they'd be starting the wrong player.Attyla wrote Wed Apr 17, 2024 2:44 pm:Actually he probably would. The first thing a new GM and HC do is find their QB. If they target Penix, he is going to get every chance to be what they want him to be, their guy.

Assuming we draft a QB, I wouldnt be surprised to see Minchew start the season no matter who it is.Attyla » Wed Apr 17, 2024 3:48 pm
O'Connell was the second best rook, but the competition was weak, damn weak.KillerRaider30 wrote Wed Apr 17, 2024 3:20 pm:I agree TT and AP would start him. I'm saying they'd be starting the wrong player.
AOC was the 2nd ranked rook QB last year.
Don't get me wrong, drafting a Qb this year is fine, but don't reach. Draft one in a later round.

Mac Jones was the best rookie in his rookie year. We should get that guy to start. Why settle for #2?vtraider » Wed Apr 17, 2024 6:18 pm
Originally Herbert wasn't supposed to start his rookie year. It was supposed to be tyrod Taylor. But the chargers medical staff messed him upchucker wrote Wed Apr 17, 2024 4:20 pm:Mac Jones was the best rookie in his rookie year. We should get that guy to start. Why settle for #2?
Based on how I expect the draft to fall, I want us to draft Penix and I want the best guy to start. If we draft Penix, I wouldn't be shocked by either O'Connell or Minshew starting the season as the #1. It takes some pressure off the rookie to do it that way. Either O'Connell or Minshew can win games for us so it's not like we're rolling out a completely washed Matt Schaub in the interim. I don't care who our QB is, just move the ball and lead us to TDs - but usually a first round rookie ends up with the starting job during his rookie year.

I'd prefer to start Minshew at the beginning of the year no matter who we draft, even if they look incredible in pre-seasonGUYDON wrote Wed Apr 17, 2024 3:27 pm:Assuming we draft a QB, I wouldnt be surprised to see Minchew start the season no matter who it is.
Unless the rook looks absolutely amazing in pre-season , might as well let tue rook sit for a couple games. If Minchew is winning, let him keep starting.
Put the rook in when he is ready.
As far as O'Connell , I like the kid and wish him the best, but I would be shocked if he ever starts for this team again, baring injury to another player.
I would not be suprised if he isnt even a Raider in 2025.
Minchew has the aggressiveness we are looking for, a guy like Penix has more tools than O'Connell... not sure how he fits on the roster.
I hope he proves me wrong and ends up being the answer.
I just want the Raiders to win I dont care if they do it with a qb that is blind, bald, and crazt, just win.

The thing is Penix can move. Qbs need to move to pass and even run for critical 1st downs at times . AOC is practically immobile. I like AOC but he's just not the guy to take the team deep into a playoff run.KillerRaider30 wrote Wed Apr 17, 2024 2:39 pm:Penix wouldn't beat out AOC.
