It's great that they banned it without running it by the NFLPA who vehemently opposes it. Sadly, typical corporate and typical of many people.Pseudoscot wrote Tue Mar 26, 2024 3:15 am:I have no problem with banning this sort of tackle. The defending player can avoid landing on their opponents legs and still make an effective stop.
The main issue is how this will be called by the officials and no doubt some players will get penalised when they have avoided full body weight on an opponents legs. It should be reviewable.
A clear definition, like what the NRL have done in that video (good find srv 5490), needs to be applied consistently. Sadly, based on how we are traditionally treated, I can't see this happening.

Honestly, I’m thinking that you’ll see it fined after the fact more than called on the field. It will be tested in the preseason by refs, then it will be sparingly called in regular season unless it’s blatant.signal » Fri Mar 29, 2024 7:16 am
Let's hope you are right.ALLRAIDERWORLD21 wrote Fri Mar 29, 2024 1:44 am:Honestly, I’m thinking that you’ll see it fined after the fact more than called on the field. It will be tested in the preseason by refs, then it will be sparingly called in regular season unless it’s blatant.

I suspect they are going to over call this in the preseason. But we all know once the regular season starts, the first time if affects the outcome of a game or pulls a team on third and long into scoring range in a tight game, people are going to go ape shit. It looks to be a very subjective call and sight angles are going to be crucial to getting it right. But it appears to have been a tackle the NFL averaged about 1 per game had they called it last year. If it reduces injury, I guess that is a plus. If they get one wrong or get a marginal call at a big moment of a game that will be very much a negative. I wish they would do what they do in baseball and test it in the preseason, scrap it for the regular season and look at the data. Then either scrap it or adopt it. There are three games worth of data for every team in the league you can go over to make this a correct decision and you don't need to rush to adopt. Test it, and analyze it before you forge ahead.Attyla » Sat Mar 30, 2024 3:59 am

I mean seriously, envy is a fucking huge deal with NFL fanbases. Mahomes wins it all and it becomes the Jordan Rules all over again. He is damn good, he does not need preferential treatment from the refs. People just need a reason to downplay his abilities when in actuality, there is not a fan on the planet who, given a chance, would not take his ass in a heartbeat. This rule, the refs are going to fuck up calling, it is just going to happen. If it is called on a player tackling Mahomes, they will shout from the mountains, "AHA!!!!!!" when it is also going to happen to other players in other games. The rule is just too hard to get right every time. People say a lot of things to massage their ego when great players do great things and that player is not on their team.16 to 88 wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 9:46 am:Ain't that the "truth"!

Speaking of Mahomes, I hope the refs address his actions when running towards the sidelines and then when defenders pull up to avoid the big hit, he takes off up the sideline for another 3-5 yards. It should be accepted that if he isnt out of bounds, he is fair game to the last inch with out a roughing or unsportsmans call. Or refs place the ball at the spot where he seemingly sells his running out of bounds.Attyla » Sat Mar 30, 2024 12:32 pm
refs do not address actions of players. They call the game. If he is in bounds, hit him legally. If he fakes going to the sidelines and continues to run, hit him legally. If they want to remove that from the game, that is not the refs, it is the competition committee. But it is gamesmanship and I personally do not want people to remove gamesmanship from the game. You know he is going to do it? Hit him legally but him him hard legally so he thinks about it next time he does it. The key is legally, and that is coachingXramfan wrote Sat Mar 30, 2024 12:14 pm:Speaking of Mahomes, I hope the refs address his actions when running towards the sidelines and then when defenders pull up to avoid the big hit, he takes off up the sideline for another 3-5 yards. In the old days a QB might get away with that once, just once lol
