The answer is NO.
That’s the first criteria of this discussion , and makes him invalid .
We are talking about Centers that started at OG to begin their career before becoming Centers again .
Matthews played OG his senior season at USC.
He was drafted by the Oilers in 1983 and listed as a GUARD .
He wore #74 , NO centers back then wore a number in the 70’s
He played 14 of his 19 years at OG or OT
Bring up the list of HOF centers , Matthews name is not on it .
Case closed

There’s no way James could be that good at Center !!!CWood24 wrote Tue Apr 30, 2024 9:30 pm:I see we have another contender for the “know all arrogance” award
Posted this in it own thread but i throw it here since there is talk about JPJ going straight in at C
Andre James among centers (with at least 150 snaps)
Pass blocking grade - 71.2 (10th)
Run blocking grade - 75.0 (11th)
Penalties - 3 (27th-most)
James was one of only 7 centers to have a run blocking grade of 75+ with a pass blocking grade of 70+.
PBLK Win Rate - 97% (3rd IOL /2nd C)
RBLK Win Rate - 70% (21st IOL / 6th C)
He's one of three IOL to finish top 25 in both categories (Creed Humphrey and Landon Dickerson)
Also James 4.9 ypc as a lead blocker were not only a career high but also 3rd in the NFL at center.
Pass blocking grade - 71.2 (10th)
Run blocking grade - 75.0 (11th)
Penalties - 3 (27th)
PBLK Win Rate - 97% (3rd IOL /2nd C)
RBLK Win Rate - 70% (21st IOL / 6th C)
4.9 ypc as a lead blocker (career high) (3rd - C)
We have a guy who is a top tier C in the NFL & we have drafted a guy who is viewed as a potentially elite IOL with a huge gap at the guard position why would we bench James for JPJ
All the talk of the guy being a HOF when he hasn't even taken a snap in the NFL is a little early is it not

Wrong , that is completely 180 degrees from the debate.Raider727 wrote Wed May 01, 2024 12:40 am:That Powers won't be a hall of fame center, if he begins his career in the NFL as a guard.

Still waiting for this list of 100’s of great Centers that had to play years at OG first ?GoodTimeCharlie » Wed May 01, 2024 2:56 am

I already proved that is 0% when it comes to HOF Centers .
And only 30% (stretching it) of the best Centers playing now .
The silence is proof

Correction:cannon33 wrote Tue Apr 30, 2024 10:27 am:Name one long term Raider C that started out playing OG for the Raiders.
Hudson played OG briefly for the Chefs.
Mosebar might of briefly played some OT.
Calling Otto, Dalby and Robbins outliers is comical .
Those “outliers” played C , 32 of the 64 years the Raiders have been in existence.

JPJ should be the starting C from Day 1BoKnows81 wrote Wed May 01, 2024 3:02 am::popcorn:
While I'm not feeding into the HOF guard/center crap, I truly do believe thar JPJ should play center. If not this year, DEF next year and every year after. That's where he is best suited and i'd hate to see a stud like that wasted away at RG. I'm not a fan of constantly moving guys around on the line.

Who cares about average or below average players .
We all want to see your list of scrub Centers that played Guard first , that surely will validate your point .
