It may not be a luxury but it's not at the top of the requirements for a successful and good LB. The best LBs have 3 things... good vision, ability to tackle and leadership. I'm not saying I'm 100% sold that Eichenberg will have all 3 but I think he has the ability to be our 2nd best LB out the gate. It's not like we have much of a choice. We haven't valued LBs in years.Dark Horse wrote Thu May 02, 2024 8:39 am:Athleticism is not an luxury in this age of offense. And there is little chance Eichenberg gets any significant PT outside of ST and possible injury to starters.

I wasn't high on him and I'm not going to act like I am now. He went in the 5th. For a reason. I do like the fact that he is pretty much a full sized LB. Having said that, barring injury, he has zero shot at replacing Deablo.BoKnows81 wrote Thu May 02, 2024 9:29 am:It may not be a luxury but it's not at the top of the requirements for a successful and good LB. I don't know why we are talking about linebackers in a thread about signing a free agent wide receiver, but.... When I see the 49ers LBs like Willis (retired) and now Warner and Greenlaw, I see all of those traits plus explosive speed when they need it. I think Spillane has some of that as he closes well; we'll see what Eichenberg can bring, but he does look like a classic old school linebacker. I looked up his 40 time and it was 4.69. But, if he closes well within 10-15 yards, he will be useful.BoKnows81 wrote Thu May 02, 2024 9:29 am:It may not be a luxury but it's not at the top of the requirements for a successful and good LB. 40 time doesn't mean jack shit when you're usually only running sideline to sideline.RunOverByHubbard wrote Thu May 02, 2024 9:41 am:I don't know why we are talking about linebackers in a thread about signing a free agent wide receiver, but.... Yeah, he isn't regarded as a sideline to sideline guy. He is mainly a hole filler. The top ten LB tackler getters in the league are all much faster than Eichenberg. Speed means more than you think.BoKnows81 wrote Thu May 02, 2024 9:46 am:40 time doesn't mean jack shit when you're usually only running sideline to sideline.

I see Eichenberg more a numbers to numbers LB(4.69) so it's a good thing all our corners tackle.BoKnows81 wrote Thu May 02, 2024 9:46 am:40 time doesn't mean jack shit when you're usually only running sideline to sideline.

I think he’ll end up like a similar player to Jermaine Johnson who had a breakthrough year last year too.Bram_Raider wrote Thu May 02, 2024 4:22 am:Just hope Tyree Wilson proves people wrong otherwise the McDaniels era set us back more than a year and a half.

Let's see if he makes it through camp and is on the opening day roster. This isn't some amazing signing, it's someone that has been around forever his his former team didn't want.RunOverByHubbard » Thu May 02, 2024 1:48 pm
I watched Eichenberg's film last week and he looks a lot like Spillane -- maybe a bit more aggressive. Diagnosis is critical in the NFL though and we'll see how he does. I like the pick for now.Sold My Soul » Thu May 02, 2024 6:50 pm

You can't teach speed which is true. You either have it or you don't. But I think you put too much emphasis on it? You can have gobs of speed but the NFL is such a fast game that the moment a LB takes a false step the play can go right by him. A guy like Spillane clearly demonstrates having the ability to decipher what the offense is going to do, taking the proper pursuit angles and, well, just having football smarts/instinct can be very beneficial. Here's hoping Eichenberg turns out to be an even better version of Robert...Dark Horse wrote Thu May 02, 2024 10:00 am:Yeah, he isn't regarded as a sideline to sideline guy.
